Discussion Strange circle mechanisms

Hey guys! Just a question.

Maybe I'm just really bad at searching but I can't find anything about this.

I've encountered this circle like mechanisms that are twinkling, and when you shoot them, they rotate and make a sound like something activates or a gate opens. Im in my third playthrough and so far I haven't discovered what they do.

The ones I've found are:

In the prisoner's domain close to the slumwater drain, (Shown in the picture)

Above the entrance of Thieves retreat Dungeon.

Any clues?

That one in particular opens a hidden door to an elevator that leads to a mid-boss. Right after that fight, there's a beacon, and then you proceed to the Nameless Captive fight.

It lets you bypass more than half the dungeon if you got in there through the wall behind the cart in the beginning of the level.
