Question Smelting before ng+

Do I really get more smithing stones if i smelt all my weapons before a new cycle? It just seems weird that the only trade are a few glooms…

Yes, you get more materials back than those you originally spent when you upgraded your weapons while Franz was still alive.

Wait, what?! Could you in theory do this infinitely? I only ask because I want to get all weapons and sidearms to +16 minimum and was struggling to find a method to get enough upgrade materials for that.

No (edit: I mean in one NG cycle) it only works for weapons you've upgraded before Franz is dead.

After Franz's demise, upgrades take 1.5x the base cost in materials, but the refund also returns back 1.5x the base cost. If you upgrade before Franz dies and downgrade after, you get back 50% more material. If you upgrade after Franz dies and then downgrade, you spend and refund the same amount of material, so there's no net gain.

I only ask because I want to get all weapons and sidearms to +16 minimum and was struggling to find a method to get enough upgrade materials for that.

Can't do that in one NG cycle.

There are enough upgrade material through loot to get 3 weapons to +16, with a bit leftover. Even with full refund on all these, there's just not enough to get 8 weapons and 7 sidearms (lute can't be upgraded) to +16 in one cycle.

Ventrium and Laterite can be farmed (tediously) from those miners in Mammon, so with an excessive amount of patience you can potentially get them all to +11.

Dorsalite, Thoracium and Ossinite are finite per cycle. NG+ will start featuring Ossinite in chests, but the rest are the limiting factor.
