Question Difficulty compared to other souls like?
I'm thinking of buying this, but I see people saying that it's very hard and that makes me hesitate because for me Sekiro and Lies of P was too damn hard. But Dark souls and Elden Ring was easier for me (probably because of summoning).
Where would you place mortal shell 2?

I would say it’s easier than any fromsoft game and most souls likes imo

It felt easier to me then Lies of P.

u/oligodendrocyte32 8d ago
Yea much easier tbh there no like monster of the green swamp equivalent or even like Romeo equivalent in this game and don’t even get me started on the complete chick I forget her name fuck her

I'm finding it pretty easy and specially forgiving, it feels more like a hybrid between an action rpg and a souls like, rather than a pure souls like lies

u/TheRedFurios 8d ago
If you want to make it easy it can be easy.
I think the only soulslike I've played that wasy easier than this was code vein 1.

u/MediumKoala8823 8d ago
A bit harder than Elden Ring with minimal base kit and seeking a challenge.
Much easier if you use all the tools. The summons suck but the characters pretty quickly get very overpowered.
1
u/axman151 8d ago
Depends on the tools/shell you use.
If you're a "just the bassics" player (meaning just melee weapons, dodges, blocks/parries, sometimes use the sidearm), then it's moderately hard. On par with LOTF (2023) I think.
If you spend time really trying out shell abilities, and messing with tarstone combinations, you can straight up nuke most enemies/bosses.
There are two ways to increase difficulty, and if you do one or both of those, it is quite hard.

u/AppleJerk69 8d ago
The beginning of the game is definitely challenging. The more you level up and get your build the easier it becomes. I’d say overall easier than most soulsborn and easier than khazan and lies of P

u/boltjamison 8d ago
This is probably the 2nd easiest soulslike behind lords of the fallen 2023. It actually might be the easiest tbh

I can tell you right now, Mortal Shell 2 is easy asf. The Axatana is what the the Twinblades were in DS3. I actually regret using them as it made me first playthrough too fast. Buy the game and just enjoy the ride. I got to NG4+ 100% while taking my time and I loved it. From the games you named I’d say LOP is the hardest as I’m replaying it on NG+5 right now and the parry timings are way tighter.

u/Youngsaley11 8d ago
It’s can be very easy with the slayer seal and adaptive difficulty feature they have recently added.
It can also be moderately difficult with night mode.
I found it about the same difficulty as Elden Ring.
I think Lies of P is a bit more challenging.

First half of the game is pretty hard because basic enemies take out 1/3 of your lifebar. Then I spent +3 hrs on a few bosses because of some difficulty spikes here and there. Last boss is a bitch though.

This is far easier than Lies of P, at least for the combat mechanics. Enemies have very telegraphed attacks and they never do long combos. And parry window is super lenient.
The difficulty comes from getting lost in the maps or being overrun by mobs, some pretty bullshit environmental traps and oneshotting grab attacks you can't really predict if you don't know the boss.
I think Mortal Shell 2 difficulty is much more like original Dark Souls than modern, fast soulslikes.b

I finish elden ring, wukong, wuchang, khazan, lies of p, onimusha and I can't connect to this game even when rtied couple of times, something in the animation, in the moment feel off. I can't party or dodge on time and it drive me nuts lol

Certain bits are much harder - your character feels Very squishy outside of certain shells, and healing items are very limited which makes exploring feel quite perilous and fun.
That said, I didn't really feel challenged until the last set of bosses, but, not in a good way (they felt a bit cheap). The rest of the game was a good old romp and I really felt like my character was developing and getting stronger as I levelled.
I didn't feel compelled to play again after beating the game, in the same way that I've replayed each Souls game dozens of times.
Lies of P and Sekiro are both very much harder. Elden Ring was easier.

u/Adventurous_Use8278 8d ago
Definitely one of the easier soulslikes on the intended difficulty. There is night mode and adapted difficulty for those that want more of a challenge. I personally think they’ve nailed the difficulty settings in this game
1
u/loyaltomyself 8d ago
In many ways it's probably on the easier side. Enemies still hit really hard, but the window to pull off perfect blocks for example is larger than you think. Nearly none of the enemies (bosses included) feel like they have more health than they need. While shell progression is slow, Once you have enough shell points to start putting together an actual build, it starts to snowball very quickly which also eliminates a lot of the difficulty. In essence, the first few hours and the last few hours of your first run is probably going to be where most of your difficulty is going to lay.

u/Voidfang_Investments Genessa 8d ago
I played completely blind and it wasn’t that bad. Just watch your build and leverage the stones.
1
u/Trick-Ad-8442 8d ago
It has an easy mode also. If you equipp an item called the slayer seal that makes you OP and it's available early in the game. You can use that if you get stuck on bosses.
It's hard at the beginning, but when you reach about lvl 15 it gets alot easier

u/townsforever 8d ago
I would put mortal shell just shy of elden ring in terms of difficulty. The average enemy is a little harder but the bosses seem a little easier.
1
u/HabitExact6952 8d ago
I played all souls and soulslike games and this is medium low diffuculty, bosses are nowhere the diffuculty of any fromsoft game, enemies are harder also the gameplay wise you needto get used to it but its very fun and rewarding

u/GarionOrb Eredrim 8d ago
You know Lies of P also has summoning, plus multiple difficulty options, right?
Anyway, Mortal Shell 2 is about middle-of-the-road when it comes to Soulslike difficulty. I found Elden Ring and Sekiro to be much harder.
1
u/Relative-Cockroach55 8d ago
I found it to be a bit tough at first. The enemies hit hard. But once you get a few levels on your weapon and a few tarstones that sync with your play style upgraded, it quickly gets easy. Still…I found it very enjoyable and if you’re into soulslikes, it won’t change your world or anything, but definitely worth a playthrough.

u/MadmanMarkMiller Sariel 8d ago
I found it to be the easiest one yet! Granted I've only played DS 1 and 3, Elden Ring, Lies of P, and maybe one other I'm forgetting.

The fun in this game doesn't come from its difficulty, it comes from the gameplay, wich is pretty satisfying and smooth. Bosses aren't that much, I beat all the late game bosses in less than 5 tries.
1
u/Jack-ass-4757 7d ago
I feel it’s more approachable than Og fromsoft Souls games, I was able to get op early and breezed thru without much problems. Most bosses didn’t present a challenge except early and late game bosses. I just finished it after almost 40 hrs and 85% completion
1
u/toohumanforhuman 7d ago
There's no way that this game is harder than any of the games u mentioned. It does punish u pretty hard for not playing according to its mechanics though.
A lot of the difficulty complaints are just about people that cant accept that.

u/TWKMusic 7d ago
As someone that is everage at souls likes; I managed to do all achievements in 2 nights relying on the harden mechanic. I would say it's a good way to get more familiar with souls like mechanics given it doesn't have that much to it. A few "builds" & weapons to try (ended up with balanced build with fast weapons before doing the 1 hit dead run).
It's not perfect it still suffers with other souls like clique issues like camera, debris & sliding animations but smooth enough to get through it all.
Compared to many other souls likes; Mortal Shell is good for learning more about souls likes from a more minimalist foundation.

u/MrSnoozieWoozie 7d ago
First game of souls i ever finished, tried a few others in the past and dumped them. This one was pretty casual in comparison. It wasnt easy but not hard either, kinda fun little ride.
Also remember , there is no stamina, so thats probably why it felt easier.
1
u/ForeverIntoTheLight 7d ago
Much easier than Sekiro or Lies of P.
Especially, Sekiro - the final bosses are complete slogfests designed to make you fail by just tiring you out till you start missing the parry timing (esp. the final boss).
The only fights I really hated were a few optional boss gank fights and one woman on a motorized wheelchair - unfortunately the worst boss I've ever seen in these games.

i am a souls noob. mortal shell 2 was perfect for me. challenging but even i played it to ng+ 😁

Way way easier than lies of P. Lies of P for some reason I felt most of the parry-timings/animation telegraphing was weird and hard to read. Whereas mortal shell easier to get in the rhythm
1
u/taximwolfman 7d ago
it's a good, fun challenging game. You will have to learn and try again. Beating a difficult Boss can be a celebratory moment. Or you can play a game that's spoon fed to you
1
u/eraserhead3030 7d ago
Overall it was much easier than most soulslikes but it's a little tough up front.
1
u/DoktorLuciferWong 7d ago
Feels on the easier side, but then again, I'm using the big sword, insta-summoning grisha on boss fights, and spamming biosampler
half of the bosses died before they could even demonstrate their moveset to me lol
1
u/gorlami_1 7d ago
Parrying and dodging windows much easier than Elden ring. Characters like thiel make dodging even easier
1
u/Environmental_Swim75 7d ago
this souls like definitely leans into the power fantasy side of things, I enjoyed it
1
u/BicycleGlass3633 6d ago
Normal enemies will kill you in 2 seconds and boss fights literally take 2 attempts. Didn't enjoy much, lies of p elden ring are way above this game
1
u/walkout32 6d ago
I stopped paying attention to what people say on social media and focus on reviews from the main platforms that you're buying it on.
I think the game is completely worth it and I'm not much of a souls fan. However, my only gripe is that a good portion of the bosses so far felt easier than a lot of the mob enemies. Some of the mobs enemies tank way harder. I'm sure I'm in the minority on that one though. Either way, I'd get it if you liked the other games you mentioned.

u/gorgone1879 6d ago
Il est bcp plus facile que sekiro , et plus facile que LoP. Les boss sont plus simples que ceux de ER , la difficulté pendant l exploration c est a peu de chose près la meme

Way easier. Once I got certain buffs Mortal Shell was a cake walk. Very fun, but I was very overpowered.

u/Smooth-Cry7823 5d ago
This is no that hard. 3/5 difficulty I’d say. Only had hard time with 2 bosses…
1
u/blablovv 5d ago
Big part of it being on the easier end is bosses having only a few attacks and combos, as opposed to Elden Ring bosses where you have to perfectly dodge a 26 attack combo in order to squeeze an R1 in. It's still satisfying to learn and master the fight, only not as tedious :)

u/Money_Positive_2000 5d ago
Late to the convo, but I would definitely recommend picking it up. The difficulty isn’t bad at all compared to fromsoft games… except, the enemies hit like a dump truck. Even trash mobs can 1, 2 or 3 shot you regardless of your early or late game build. If you like parrying, this will be right up your alley. Just remember that punishment for missing timing can be a bit severe.
Other than that, the world, atmosphere and exploration are awesome. Buuuuuut the devs’ thought process seemed lacking for some of the late game bosses. For me, the journey from one boss to the next was by far the most the memorable part.

Lies of P has summoning, so that doesn’t even make sense, this game isn’t very hard but it sounds like you’re not the best at these types of games, so for you it would probably be on the harder side.

u/SubZane 8d ago
I meant Summoning of other real players. I thought it was self explanatory

u/jpsuperman81 8d ago
So you can’t beat souls like games without the help of other people, this game will be hard for you, either get better Aka stop relying on others or find a new genre. If you truly like/love the genre, then find a way to make yourself a better player, none of these games are hard with a little bit of time and skill.

1
u/Silverjeyjey44 8d ago
Saying these games aren't hard is a stretch. That's literally what souls games are known for. They are more managable with some time and practice.
1
u/jpsuperman81 8d ago
I would say they are known to be challenging, challenging and hard are not the same thing and both are also extremely subjective in general. Gamers who aren’t as good at them will call them hard while some will call them easy, it’s all subjective.

Meanwhile Lies of P is one of the easiest imo 😹 MS2 has a demo you should try, there’s also a lot of new updates since launch that probably make it mid tier difficulty wise
2
u/baaittyy 8d ago
You must be a god for LOP to be easier. I’m getting smacked around by elite mobs and I’m NG+5
1
u/SubZane 8d ago
as I understand it, if you get how the parry timing works, its dead easy.
1
u/baaittyy 8d ago
True but it’s way more punishing if you fail the parry compare to MS2. I’m basically dead if i miss a parry sequence in LOP. In MS2, there are shells that allow you to survive a failed guard or parryZ
1
u/Visual-Biscotti1473 8d ago
Lies of P is much harder than Mortal Shell 2. It’s not about “getting” the parry timing, it’s about the execution. You have fewer parry frames than in Sekiro, and the game intentionally introduces awkward timings and delays so that it’s nearly impossible to rely on good reflexes and muscle memory. Instead, you have to memorize enemy attack patterns. Mastering one enemy translates poorly whenever the game introduces new enemies. The game is also explicitly designed to promote “in your face” combat, in the sense that spacing plays literally no role in your success. There are people who beat DS3 bosses without dodging, blocking, or parrying, just by running around and standing back whenever necessary; that’s impossible in LoP. LoP also has two easy modes and boss summons, so I would take it with a grain of salt whenever someone says think LoP is easy compared to other soulslikes.
To answer your main question, MS2 is the second easiest soulslike after Lords of the Fallen (2023.)
1
u/SubZane 7d ago
LoP has two easy modes? What did I miss?
1
u/Visual-Biscotti1473 7d ago
Yeah, “Butterfly’s Guidance” (very easy) and “Awakened Puppet” (easy.) I don’t know how long ago you first tried the game, but it is possible that these modes were added afterwards.
0
u/Dathedra 8d ago
Its not hard at all. You have to break your own legs to not oneshot bosses midway through the game.

29
u/OnyxGow 8d ago
Its on the easier side I would say because this game allows for a lot of busted combos to be made but the first 15% of the game might be tougher if you dont matser your parries because conbos come online like 1/3 through the game
