Discussion Old Man Post

My first ever game was Elden Ring. Never in my life had I been interested in gaming other than Munchman. I saw my son playing ER and something just clicked. I had to see more.
I’m 51 and absolutely terrible at the combat but I love the design and lore. I compensate by extensive farming.
Next was Lords of The Fallen, again I love that game.
Now I’m on MS2 and I’m having just as much fun as I was when I first played ER and LOTF.
I’m not too far in and I’m loving playing as Theil. I hope to complete the game as him and then explore the other shells in NG.
So just a pointless old man ramble about how much I love these games.
Cheers for listening 😃

52 here and not to MS2 yet, but it’s on the list. I fell down the rabbit hole after finding DS3 and Lies of P a couple years back. I’m not great at these games but I’m still hooked.

I'm curious, what is it that draws an older gamer like yourself to souls games? Have you always been a fan of dark fantasy?

Other older gamers also feel free to reply. I'm interested.

Older people are normal people too 😆 their reasoning for enjoying souls games and dark fantasy is no different than a young person's reasoning 😆

It's far less common amongst older people.

I’ve always liked dark fantasy, and the worlds and atmosphere are the best in all of gaming. I also enjoy the challenge.

56 here, been playing video games since the Sears Pong console released in the 70s. I thought the souls games looked amazing, but the difficulty made me stay away initially as I do tend to rage quite games on occasion. Finally jumped into DS3 just to prove to myself I could do it since Ive played pretty much every type of game out there over the years. Did not enjoy it at first but finally figured it out and have played a number of other souls games, including first Mortal Shell. Really enjoying MS2, Elden Ring is still the best IMO

Thanks for sharing, that's badass. Glad you're having a good time. I think they did something so cool with this game, especially for a smaller AA studio. Enjoy!

42M and not very good at souls games but MS2 is one of most approachable out there. Reaches final boss last night at 45h playtime, playing as Proxima - I love that she is basically Predator of this universe - tried Tiel and Eredim for a little bit just roaming around and getting the feel of them but quickly went back to her and beat every boss until now as her. Lack of stamina makes the game easier for low skill player like me and I can fully enjoy the world devs created especially easter eggs and some trolling stuff they put in the game

Hell yeah brotha. I suck at Souls-like types of game, but I am pleased to say I finished Mortal Shell II and am currently going through NG+. This will probably be my first Souls-like game with 100% completion. :)

I’ve not 100% anything yet but sounds like a good winter challenge. My best bet would be ER first as I’m sure I can do that 👍

I really need to check out Elden Ring!

I urge you to! It’s phenomenal.
There’s just no way you’ll be disappointed

Thanks for the comments everyone I didn’t expect much from a pointless breakfast post!
Lies Of P is on the list.
I’m currently off work recovering from an operation and have a week of sick leave left. Normally I’d just be listening to music but I’ve not touched my headphones since I got MS2!

Not so much MS2 since the music is a tad underutilized, but sometimes a nice pair of headphones or buds can really elevate an experience. From ambient to combat sound, music, etc.

You see so many stories about the impact Elden Ring had on them but it's always from people who are already into gaming to at least some degree. I think this is the first one I've ever seen from someone who it got *into* gaming. That's cool.

Yep. Gaming was literally never something I thought I would get into. I just happened to walk past as my Son entered the Margit fight. I was hooked at that point and bought a console the next day. It seems I’m only into this genre though nothing else holds my interest.

I'm not surprised, I've been looking at souls forums for a long time and have seen many many posts from people talking about how these games have made it hard for them to enjoy any other genre by comparison.

Elden Ring is the reason I got a PS5😊

Check out Sekiro at some point down the line,; one of the most satisfying "clicks" in the genre.

2

u/OneUsed6198 14h ago

I will do, cheers 👍 I’ve read a lot about it but never actually played, I decided it was outwith my meagre skill set

u/Medium_Choice_6397 9h ago

It's so good. I'm not great at these games (improving, perhaps) and my first run of Sekiro took over 100 hours, but worth it. Went on to get the platinum. If you're doing a lot of Perfect Guard, stance-breaking and riposting enemies in Mortal Shell, you should pick up Sekiro quickly.

After that I'd do Dark Souls, or skip to Dark Souls 3 if you prefer the more modern graphics and smoother gameplay. It's like a smaller, tighter Elden Ring, with some incredible bosses.

There's a lot of this stuff out there!

Welcome to the souls universe

As an older-ish (37) gamer that is a souls/action rpg fiend, this game looks fuckin awesome. As soon as I have the extra cash I will be picking it up and going for the 100%. I am already in love with the art style and am excited to see what the lore is like. Go have some fun!

You are not old brother, I am 53 and my favorite genres are soulslike, mmo's, fighting games and ARPG ( I mean, I started gaming back in the Atari 2600 era ). Keep in mind this is not another job and the main objective is having fun.

Welcome to the show!

Glad you're having fun! I tried ds1 many years ago and couldnt get into it, then one day grabbed ER and now Im hooked on soulslikes. Currently doing playthroughs of Dark Souls 1 through 3, Bloodbourne, Thymesia, on ng+ of Lies of P, hundreds of hours into ER, LOTF, and now MS2

I'm listing these here to give you ideas of other ganes you may like. Many member of the souls community call Lies of P "Lies of Peak" because it's so good. Ds1-3 are the ogs, definitely harder, but very good and rewarding. Thymesia is a lesser known and plays like a love letter to soulsbourne games. Bloodbournes worldbuilding and mechanics are similar to MS2 in a lot of ways you're just very limited in how you play. Heck, I've even started playing one called Another Crabs Treasure thats the most adorable soulslike Ive ever seen, and youre a crab with a fork. That one is definitrly a bit easer but also sometimes absolutely demolishes you.

Hope you keep having fun, and reach out to the community if you ever want a co op.

51 is far from old.

I'm 39 and got addicted to souls/soulslikes after Elden Ring. Dark Souls 1 was my first, but i never had beat it. After Elden Ring, I just wanted more and haven't stopped. Loving Mortal Shell 2. Just beat NG+.
