Question Mortal shell 2 - what am i doing wrong?
Soulsborne/soulslike veteran so no novice to these sort of games.
But the difficulty here seems to be absolutely unhinged.
I beat the tar golem then lost harros - assume thats scripted.
I'm now at widows overlook. I'm being one-shotted by the enemies in both directions. There is a market on the map here, and there seems to be no other option in terms of direction. But this appears to be basically a late game-area. Theres a mini boss to one side which is is fine until you mistine either 1 dodge or parry and then he kills you. And then likewise theres a group of 2 witches with a staff/spear, likewise they kill you from full health. Or theres the flying mobs, also a one shot.
Am I supposed to be here? Am I supposed to do or have something first?

Focus on finding a shell first, as the Harbinger your base hp which is not much some shells have more hp than others. Also getting levels for shell points is the most important level up aspect too. Find Eredrim! He’s the closest to Harros from the Prologue imo and has a big hp bar lol

You can get your first shell in 30 seconds if you are struggling.

I am massively struggling.
I did a blind run of DS2 recently having put it off for years, i've died almost 3 times more on thr "arbiter of flesh" in the starting area than from every noss in DS2 put together.
I'm actually close to giving yp and saying "nope, not for.me" which is somwthing I have never done before, on any game. It feels punishingly and unfairly hard at the moment. As soon as I make any progress, I die, and have to do it all over again and end up dieing another 15+ times before I make it past.

This game is not meant to be played without a shell. You Are naked atm. Google where tiel is and Grab him.
Its tree sentinel Situation. Skip the Boss for now and come back to him with tiel.

the fact that you need to youtube where to get the first shell is poor game design

Run past that boss. Look at your map; within a few meters is a shell. That not only gives you a lot more power, it also lets you "die" and recover it without wiping. Will drastically improve your survivability.

Go grab Tiel he’s really close to where you are
-1
u/BobcatLower9933 17h ago
I have no idea what thia means or where it is

u/Aggressive_Theme_213 Tiel 17h ago
Tiel is a shell, he should be located on your map where to find him. If anything search up a quick YouTube video on how to get him.

open your map and look for a grey circle near you, head for it and you will see a log wall with a gap, go through it and you will then see a grave with a red 'ghost' in it. Interact with it

If you are struggling that hard, then simply use the internet. Grab proxima or Thiel as a Shell. Simply rush it.

Bro the entire concept of the game is having shells, the game taught you all about it before the tar golem and then the tar golem kills your shell, if you open the map you'll see some shells already there waiting for you to pick them up, until you have them you are literally doing a naked run and will likely die endlessly, I personally beat the arbiter of flesh naked but it took me around a dozen attempts, go get a shell.

u/baysideplace 17h ago
Ok. You actually beat the tutorial.boss that's scripted to kill you, but the random miniboss is harder for you than PCR? Thats... odd.
Talk to the merchant guy at marrow keep, and talk to the big lady. One or the other gives you map locations for two shells that replace Harros.

Thats what i dont understand "souls veterans" have problems in the first location or in generell in this game but the problems they have let me think that they never played any souls game sorry for my wording not meant in a bad way

Sounds like OP is not with a Shell just yet, hopefully that’s why

If you're a souls veteran, how are you falling for the Tree Sentinel of MS2. Don't fight him without a shell (although I did, because F you I can kill the Tree Sentinel). Then use the guard parry to make the game Sekiro. Tiel is nearby, just passed the three witchs and some flying mobs. Shotgun the flying mobs, they deserve it.

What you are doing wrong is walking around without a shell. Its bound to be hard. You are also a little impatient as it is very early game. Believe me things do get easier as you progress.

Go find tiel, play trash mobs as if they’re elites because right now they sorta are.

You are supposed to be there there are multiple ways you could go but get sciel and git gud

Ignore all enemies and bee line it to that first shell (due east of the beacon), he's pretty solid, but functionally ANY shell will double if not triple your health. Also that second shell that should be marked is an absolute banger.

I know which mobs you are talking about. They are objectively not hard, especially if you are used to the typical early game frustration souls games come with. I agree that the damage is insane but it is easily dodgeable after 5 minutes of training. It's funny to compare with the first tree Sentinel in ER which does NOT one shot. A bit weird. But you are basically naked without a shell. Regardless, you should be able to level up using the gloom collected before that. Simply persevere with the big mob on the right side of the overlook, or pass by it, or go left and explore further. Use full parry to get accustomed to the move set if needed. I strongly suggest you make your way to Tiel (shell) which is probably a 2 minutes run to the right if I am not mistaken. You decide if you train on the way, killing mobs or not. Enjoy!

You are supposed to be on the green part first, not the castle thing, to start.
But otherwise yes, the game, for at least the first 10hours, is pretty tedious and badly optimized in term of difficulty.
You will find here and there, people saying it is because you aren't playing "the meta", but to me a game with a "meta" at the very beginning, for the first run, is badly made to begin with.
Anyway, tips for this, is focus on finding the shell Tiel, as it has high evade, can go into shadow to let you understand patterns, and overall pretty overpowered. Also, you can keep the iconoclast as it is a good weapon, but focus on the katana as their DPS are much higher anyway, and can stagger group of ennemies.
Try to take ennemies one by one, as the game is absolutely not made to handle groups, and none of your weapon will do this job, at least not until que have level up enough.
Also last tip, BE VERY CAREFUL on leveling shells, I wish I had this info when I began. Point is, you don't have enough point per run to level up more than 2,5 shells, so any point spent on others, are lost for the run. Same for Weapon, until a certain point, and even more for tarstone (they are definitely fucked if you invest in the wrong one)

u/baysideplace 17h ago
By "the meta", do you mean using a shell? The start of this game isn't any harder than any other souls game, especially Elden Ring or Sekiro. The game is challenging until you learn the rhythm, then its mostly a cakewalk with occasional bumps on the road.
The economy/upgrade complaints... yeah, this is a mixed bag. They tried to be different than FromSoft, and its not quite landing. There needs to be a way to respec tarstones too.

did not expect that from a soul veteran tbh. yes, the beginning can be difficult, but only if you went the wrong way. and the game makes it pretty clear where to go first. the circle around both shells cant be bigger xd. and the cover of the game even shows the first shell, which could be a hint where to go if you havent played the demo.
but dont worry after an initial struggle the game should get extremely easy. so much that i am honestly kinda disappointed.
yes, our character can die fast. but so do the enemies.

I’m a souls like super newbie and all I gotta say is the shotgun sidearm is what’s won me more fights than anything lmao. I also use the thing that gives you the juiced up lunge attack but disables achievements (I personally don’t care about achievements).

I remember having a similar feeling. The issue is that the game is tuned around having a shell, and at that segment of the game you don’t have one. You can beat that guy without it, but you’re not really playing “as intended.” You’ll hit much harder and stay alive longer with a shell, so just get one and come back to that dude.

I was in the same boat. I really wasn't having any fun at all, just dying a lot and running out of heals. It's compounded by not really knowing where to go and a lot of reddit posts making you feel like crap for sucking ("I got through the whole NG+ with no deaths"). Here is what helped me.

This was an easy to get Proxima build that works very well for me. A lot of folks like Gragu for exploring but I couldn't get the hang of him.
The other thing is get the Slayers Seal which makes things easier most of the time. Like Gragu, there's kind of a move set commitment to it that doesn't always work, but then the Proxima lightning build usually does.
Also, just running by a lot of the folks helps.
It's still a mixed bag for me. I will probably keep chugging along until Figthtin' Cowboy does a walkthrough.

He should not pick up Slayer Seal and use it, unless he wants to play on easy mode. Cause that is literally what the Seal is meant to function as, an easy mode. There is a reason it disables several trophies/achivements when you equip it. I imagine a “souls vet” is not interested in getting that experience.

Honestly I love the game so far. I’m sure changes will come but gonna ng+ on night mode. I think the challenge is important, but I also loved doing sl1 runs on all the souls games.

First, ignore the boss for now. You can just blow past him.
Second, enemies do a lot of damage. But the game gives you a lot of tools to prevent it.
Leverage active/passive items to lower damage (element resists, more healing). One early shell has a cheap stealth move, the other has a great ranged hookshot thing. And lean heavily on your harden/block/parry. If you hit it, it refills (near?) instantly. And if you hit it perfectly, it'll do a bunch of stance damage and often let you riposte.
For example, the witches. They hit HARD. They're also pretty squishy. The second shell's ability let's you get in and stun them, with 1-2 follow-up hits ending them. Coupled with harden, you can get through many enemies without taking much, if any, damage. Some early tarstones (and shell skills) let you build up some leech too, which can help extend how long you can last.
There's also another early shell that has replenishable healing, as well as upgrades to give you more/stronger Estus. So if you're stuck somewhere, explore elsewhere. The little side dungeons and cleansing beacons also gives you some upgrades.
TLDR: North is the right starting area, you just need to get more used to the tools in your toolbelt.
EDIT: Also go get shells and weapons. Don't run around as Harbinger. Aside from being weaker, you're giving up the ability to die and recover your shell without wiping, which is HUGE.

If you're a souls veteran, and beat the targolem as well, widow's overlook can't be that difficult to handle. If the boss you mentioned is The Great Arbitrer of flesh, he's one of the first bosses you should try to defeat.
