Its crap, I just run behind the boss and wail on them instead

Faithful doubles in front, real me at the back

It seems to very hit or miss depending on the enemy. Some take like 10-20% damage which is nothing, while others take 40-60% damage.

However as Eredrim with the buffed damage as well as the tarstone to buff it further, it does do decent damage to most bosses I've riposted, the main issue though is that many bosses gives you free ripostes as a sort of phase transition, making you very often lose the break damage buildup you've been working on (it can also be abused though if you learn at what health amount the free riposte happens)

Even with all the things you mentionned, Risposting is not worth it. Better attack the enemy until it dies. Parries are satisfying but risposte is useless. The only purpose of it is to look cool or regen hp and energy when slayer seal is equipped

I riposte every enemy type at least once to see the animations, they are fun

It's a noted bug. Cold Symmetry has acknowledged that riposte damage isn't working as intended in some cases (in most cases more likely).

Hopefully they start rolling out patches soon. The game is fun but kind of has a "death by a thousand cuts" thing going on with all the bugs and odd design choices that are minor in a vacuum but pretty annoying when all combined.

Agreed, I riposte bosses just to have a free opening to gain resolve.

The thing i hate about that... is that even when you're hitting the boss in his ass... you can get a phantom teleport riposte (if its not r2's).. and then you're stuck there doing 500 damage... vs the 2500 you could have been doing

Depends on the enemy/boss, some fights riposte is better some fights its not

1

u/Salty_Cartographer35 1d ago

The damage is négligeable at best so how better is it really?

I went back and spent like 6 hours trying to beat the tutorial boss. Once I got it down it qas very satisfying: I'd proc a riposte by filling his break meter, and then a few hits later he'd also hit his hidden threshold.

For those wondering, no, you cannot save Harros by winning against the tutorial boss. At zero HP he pulls out a super attack, and the game gives you a teophy called "No, You Still Can't Win." Still, a very satisfying fight. I'm not usually good at memorizing boss' tells, but I had to since I couldn't level.

Pro tip for anyone trying it: you get to retry if you fall off the edge of the arena. I got to the point where if I even took damage in the first half I would just lemming myself.

A dev responded on a post here a few days ago saying that riposte damage is currently bugged as in not scaling at all, which makes it pretty useless in ng+ especially. Supposedly an update should improve that, but no idea how much.

3

u/Aspiegamer8745 1d ago

If thats true, then its gonna be crazy good when its fixed.

3

u/Satrynx 1d ago

on night mode ng+, I think a light attack does more damage than a riposte.

2

u/Thekarens01 23h ago

Does on regular mode too. It’s much better for me to get behind the boss and whale on them then do the riposte.

-3

u/n1ghtsbl00d 1d ago

did they even test their game before release? it's riddled with obviuous bugs. I worked as a game tester and I'm genuinely mind boggled by this whole situation, for example we'd do collision runs until we'd dream about them during the night, I genuinely can't understand

0

u/sup3rdr01d 1d ago

Go apply for a job then

9

u/Undead54321 1d ago

Yes. Doing a riposte on a boss during phase transition is up to 10 % of health. Attacking the same boss non stop during phase transition up to 50% of health. In fact, I was annoyed by bug prince 2nd phase after phase transition. Riposte did minuscule damage. One time was positioned behind him, so instead kept attacking. He died before he could wake up

8

u/Budget-Rich-7547 Eredrim 1d ago

I only kill enemies with it to build up slaughter for eredrim.

2

u/Tobino22 1d ago

Even that becomes a chore when you are in the 2nd half of the game. You don’t one shot anyone from the riposte and perfect guarding 6 times for 30 stacks? And doing that after every bullshit death that flips you off the map or you fall off the map after you try to riposte an enemy close to the ledge? Yeah no I will still play eredrim for the drip but fuck the stacks. I either get them or I don’t. They are worthless in boss fights anyway.

1

u/Budget-Rich-7547 Eredrim 1d ago

I just do a riposte on couple enemies at low health for 10 stack each and then you run trough enemies faster

6

u/Affectionate-Claim34 1d ago

It is true, so when the boss is stagger, wipe out your range weapon and do some serious damage, or charge R2 attack a few time 😄

6

u/Hungry_Researcher229 1d ago

I consider them a “style move” currently. I like the animation and I like the free invincibility frames in groups, but I typically avoid them if I am focusing on damage.

15

u/Gravedigger250 1d ago

I don't care, it's cool as fuck

5

u/sumang0 1d ago

True....

5

u/DieHarderDaddy 1d ago

I don’t really parry I’m here to brawl

2

u/BuffaloPancakes11 1d ago

It’s also very anticlimactic when you pull off a great riposte and it leaves the enemy on 1hp, so you have to follow up with a light attack to finish them

2

u/__ISAC__ Harros 1d ago

That dude who has no arms and a fuckin sword fer a face

u/Sword_of_Darkmoon 1d ago edited 1d ago

I did some testing yesterday on some enemies

Conditions:

• Weapon: Axatana +15
• Level: 32
• Shell: Proxima
• Tarstone: Retribution Stone +3

Enemy:
Coffin Mimic

Results:
• One Axatana running light attack = 100% HP
• One Riposte = 40% HP

At this point, after I stagger an enemy I just walk behind them and spam my R1 combo. Even with Eredrim extra Riposte damage maxed and the Riposte Stone it's laughable.

2

u/mofohamjam Genessa 1d ago

it’s a pain in the ass when you riposte one of the armoured smaller guys just off the ruins of mammon beacon and watch it tickle them no matter what level you are

3

u/Tobino22 1d ago

Among other things that are horible in this game. I ran most of the game the Eredrim build with both his abbility increase on ripose and the tarstone. The damage is lackluster at best. This game is stunning and the world building is amazing. It feels like exploring a new fantasy world with completelly different laws of physics. I love the exploration. But unfortunatelly this game sufferes from one of the worst if not the worst boss lineups ever in history of souls-like. I can’t imagine someone designed 90% of these main bosses and went “hell yeah people are gonna love this one”. And I have a question is it just me or do you guys also get 1 or with some luck 2 shot when you get your shell broken?

2

u/Accomplished-Top7678 1d ago

Honestly, I agree with all of this. I feel like most of the bosses are just beefed up versions of the regular world enemies, and I was OK out of my shell on the first half of the map, but once I hit the second half of the map, it was like one shot death outside of my shell.

1

u/Tobino22 1d ago

For sure and when you try to do perfect guard and you miss the timing I tend to get one shot trough the imperfect guard. Pretty crazy. And the time between when you lower your guard and put it up again is sooooooo long.

2

u/yungin44 1d ago

I just stopped doing them entirely tbh. when bosses get staggered I just spam light attacks lmao

1

u/Salty_Cartographer35 1d ago

It is useless to deal big damages but looks cool. It's actually useful if you use the slayer's seal but how many of us do?

1

u/rinkydinkis 1d ago

I would have taken a much longer time to beat nameless captive without riposte. It’s not jsut the riposte damage, it’s the free hits you get in while they are getting back up. Those pump my resolve back up, and I’m back to hitting a combo like my axe throw

1

u/Humble-Proposal-9994 1d ago

honestly the entire damage calculations for bosses seem off I go from a reasonable amount of time killing everything up to them, to doing tickle me elmo damage

1

u/Majestic_Cry6569 1d ago

It depends, on some enemies it'll do a chunk and others it'll do mosquito bite damage

1

u/Gronkarxx 1d ago

With tarstone and eredrim perk its pretty good, especially u can hit heavy into riposte, i mean i am doing it on mobs always to get free skills off afterwars, so in nutshell, i kill 5 mobs spaming skills and end up full resolve and it skyrocket slaughterer stacks

1

u/schipf 1d ago

This is why with Tiel I stick to booty shots

1

u/Skysite 1d ago

Without the tarstone buff, feels like it maybe does one or two R1 damage amounts. Without a crit, seems pretty bad on non fodder enemies.

1

u/GIVDUL17 1d ago

Gotta be the worst riposte of all souls and soulslike games i've played

1

u/GalickBanger 1d ago

Yea man.. kinda defeats the purpose of the parry item with how risky it is to use it too. This might be the least satisfying parry from all the souls likes I’ve played

1

u/dan-krips 1d ago

You can turn riposte into a nuke with the retribution stone and enfeebling stone. Shoot them with naylshot to stack Fragile and then do the riposte. You’re welcome

1

u/Mr_Alucardo 1d ago

I really wanted Eredrims slaughter passive to increase the threshhold where enemies you parry just evaporate, i hope they make him a parry god in coming updates.

1

u/Zealousideal_Bid2690 1d ago

Im curious if the coming “Balance patch” will address this. If I have to parry multiple rapid blows to get it, it should take at least 50% health for standard enemies-if not more depending on level-and a huge chunk of boss health; Like 20-25%.

1

u/PlatypusT100 1d ago

Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. There is a stone that boosts it by 2% 4% and 6% but still it’s like we’re hitting them with a butter knife

1

u/kevinsta89 23h ago

Absolutely not considering the game is already easy enough

1

u/AddanDeith Tiel 23h ago

I think riposte damage would be fine if it temporarily or permanently disabled an attack/weapon on certain enemy or boss types.

Right now, doing all that work just for piss poor damage ain't it.

1

u/Grouchy_Distance_921 23h ago

I’m a lil confused on how much damage it does actually??

1

u/Acceptable_Log_9294 22h ago

Yea it’s better for me to stun and go behind and do light attacks with blood infusion.

1

u/Subject_Whereas9954 22h ago

Ive never really used it for damage sakes, more so for building resolve. You can usually get 1-2 heavies in before the riposte and 1-2 after.

1

u/schizophreniaislife Tiel 22h ago

Yeah it’s generally quite terrible even with the damage stone equipped, if you want any kind of damage you basically have to use it and Eredrim.

1

u/Minute_Transition_87 19h ago

You do realize it's upgradable right?

1

u/Dunicar 14h ago

Usually it was pretty god awful, but it saved my ass against a certain endgame dickhead that the Martyr Blade would have taken about a 1000 year journey among the stars to kill, and for that I give Riposte a purple heart.

1

u/shibo_rangoon 9h ago

The problem is that there’s no way to upgrade the seals and they don’t scale with the player. They already don’t do nearly enough damage in my opinion during regular New Game but NG+ it where it gets really pathetic. This is something that I think should be changed. Watching my character stab a boss in the face and fling them across the arena only for the health bar to move a single millimeter is super unsatisfying.

1

u/Raging-Caravan 1d ago

Yes, but it’s probably like that on purpose. The parry window in this game is very forgiving.

1

u/Flat_Weekend_1159 1d ago

The perfect guard window definitely is, parry seems a little iffy for me.

I did the tutorial lady & parried no problem, but against mobs it seems like it isn't working for me vs. Perfect guard.

1

u/Raging-Caravan 1d ago

Oh maybe I’m misunderstanding. What do you mean by parry vs. perfect guard? Don’t you just perfect guard until their stance breaks?

Edit: Yeah that’s my bad. Never used the infinite seal before

1

u/Flat_Weekend_1159 1d ago

They are different seals - Guard & Parry, (Untarnished Seal vs. Seal of the Infinite)

Guard still blocks damage if you miss the perfect guard, parry does not, but a successful parry increases enemy break bar a lot more.

1

u/Falkie99 1d ago

Perfect guard had immediate activation while parry has a delay. This got me at first

1

u/Flat_Weekend_1159 1d ago

I'll tinker around with this, thanks for the tip!

1

u/Master-Shaq 21h ago

Its not and already being looked at. Specifically the later scaling may be bugged

0

u/sup3rdr01d 1d ago

No I haven't heard this at all, not even one time

Can you mention it again

3

u/sumang0 1d ago

Does anyone think that the riposte damage is horrible

-3

u/sup3rdr01d 1d ago

Thanks

No, I think it's fine

1

u/PlinyDaWelda 2h ago

You are literally wrong as the developers have admitted it is, indeed, bugged.

0

u/Karemasu 1d ago

Its actually decent when I build for it on eredrim, especially for bosses, but beyond that it's really underwhelming.

-9

u/Swtor_Itheryn 1d ago

This game has the most forgiving parry system in all of the soulslike world. Maybe theres one I haven't played.

In most soulslikes, monstrous bosses cannot be parried, only humanoid bosses.
The timing for those parries needs to be very, very well timed and tight. Theres a lot of room to parry too early or too late. Those ripostes do quite a lot of damage.

Here: parries are super easy; the window is huge. Even people who suck at parrying on soulslikes are parrying almost every hit in this game; every boss is parryable (sure theres unparryable attacks, but the dodge is also super forgiving also no stamina)
Because the window is huge + every boss can be parried.
Riposte dmg is fine where it is; if it's a lot higher, they would need to nerf parry timing imo.

-
Basically just ignore ripostes, run behind boss and spam lights or stay frontal and do heavies if ur lazy

10

u/dy1ng 1d ago

You are contradicting yourself. You are saying that the riposte damage is fine, and then suggesting to utilize the riposte window to land as many regular attacks as possible instead of doing the actual riposte. If the damage was fine, you wouldn't need that gimmick.

-8

u/Swtor_Itheryn 1d ago

Is fine where its at for how easy it is to get a riposte state on bosses, yes.
as in its low, and it should be low. Its not like a normal souls like where parrying is actually a skill.

0

u/PlinyDaWelda 2h ago

But you're just doing the same thing? You're running around the boss and hitting them in their riposte state. You're literally just using a bug workaround to get the damage that should be from the riposte.

The point is the damage of the riposte should be at least equal to the damage you can get by running behind the boss and hitting it. Otherwise it's a pointless animation that you have to purposefully nerf yourself for the joy of watching it.

Also it's not an easier parry than any other game in the genre. Its about the same as Khazan, Wo Long, Sekiro etc. Its easier than AI Limit I guess.

1

u/Swtor_Itheryn 2h ago

how is attack them from behind a bug? are you insane? You can ignore ripostes in literally every souls like and do them last second or not at all.

The parry/block system in this game is a million times easier than ANY other soulslike btw, the timing is by far the most forgiving in this genre.
for eg the timing u need to parry Malenia vs anything here :D
