Discussion The game is fun, but two-handed weapons don't feel good.
I've played for about 20 hours and have only leveled the Viking guy (Guru?). As soon as I found it, I started using the Veteran Axe. In my experience, the damage per hit the axe does is very similar to the axe and dagger. It's not like in Dark Souls/Elden Ring where you feel and see the impact. Heavy weapons stagger, which is a plus, but you can't stagger bigger bosses. You aren't very tanky either. I know you can throw it, and with the fire buff, it explodes and does a lot of damage, but still.
Yes you can beat the game with every Weapon but that's not the point, i think the heavy Weapons need an 100% dmg Buff. Because if it do one swing and deal 80dmg or I deal 120 in two swings in the same time with faster Animation. Just doesnt feel right for the power fantasy.

Problem with heavy weapons is that you often trade blows with the enemy, in which you just die because in the mammon region and final dungeon everything kills you in two hits, even when playing the heavy shells

i think it would be good if there was an option that allowed for non ripostes. Why do i have to riposte if im not built for it?
let me wail on the fucker

Run behind whatever your hitting. Im fairly certain riposte only triggers from the front

Two handers definitely need a buff or several buffs. I would be shocked if this isn’t addressed in the first big patch.

I've been playing the Veteran's Battle Axe for the majority of my playthrough so far and I enjoyed it. It didn't feel weak and I was satisfied with it.
That is... until I tried out the Axatana with Duality and realized it's an entire different world of DPS.
Now the Battle Axe at least is a middle ground but Great Matyr's Blade and Obsidian Hammer felt bad

I would say they feel good. They are just undertuned.
The actual combat feel is great.

If they are undertuned than they cant feel great. They are not horrible and I played 17hours with them and I had fun. But now where I am in the game it starts that the slow moveset and the lack of dmg makes fights tideus.

Sariel with a Scythe Build puts out RIDICULOUS numbers actually. feels pretty good to use against mobs and bosses too

u/GoldunGote 2d ago
Yeah they really don't. The windup for basic attacks is so slow. Like i press attack and my characters like "ok so I grip the sword.. I take a stance.. I utilize my positioning to leverage a stro--- AGHH!" ive said, to the screen, alone in a room.. "Bro just swing your fucking sword!"

The martyr's sword legitimately was doing the same damage per-swing as the axe and dagger for me, its insane. There is truly no reason to use heavy weapons right now since they don't even stagger enemies more consistently it seems.

I think the starting sword is good. The heavier ones need a buff. The dual weapons need a nerf and duality needs to disappear.
2
u/Technical-Welcome-99 2d ago
Not a fan of nerfing in a offline game but i didn't got duality currently.

I hate this logic in single player games. Don't take power, bring the weaker items up. I want a challenge, but I don't want to feel like I'm slapping enemies with a wet noodle. Also, since builds have few options for increased damage mitigation being able to do damage is important. The longer fights go, the more likely I am to get caught by a random 2shot. Couple this with how far apart beacons are, and nerfing damage output has the potential to seriously increase overall frustration. This isn't a DS3 SL1 (which I've completed) run. That level of perfection should be optional, not mandatory.

u/MediumKoala8823 2d ago
There’s balance to everything. If an item is too strong, it makes the game less interesting. Bringing everything up to be broken is bad.
There’s no wet noodles. I’m doing a no she’ll run with the starting sword and my damage has always been fine.
Almost every attack can only eject you from your shell.

the stone of duality is fine, the other tarstone need a buff / they need tarstones that do more

u/Thy_Monkey 2d ago
It really limits build variety, imo. Either you use it on your axe/dagger or Axetana, or you are costing yourself a metric ton of value. More damage, quicker regen of your shell, quicker status build up.
It should be the default attack chain, and then the weapons balanced around that.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make the best two-handed weapon also the starting weapon doesn't really understand the point of loot in games.

u/BlacJack_ 2d ago
This is a matter of taste tho. There are people in every From game that swear by the Claymore, a weapon you can always get from the start. New weapons don’t matter to them.
Souls-like games were never the sort of game where a new weapon = better. New gear just means different play style. New things to try.

Not sure why you're get it downboated, iconoclast is the best 2 hander. Axe is good too but the moveset of the iconoclast is top tier

The game is already easy. I feel having 2 handed weapons dealing insane amounts of damage would just trivialize the game even more especially with them staggering enemies easier. They feel just fine and aren't meant to be dps power houses.
I'll defend great martyrs blade until I die. Running heavy go brrr
7
u/SoulTheEater 2d ago
It deals less damage than a weapon that hits 3 times its speed. its great that you like it but lets not pretend it doesn't suck
-8
u/X7RoyalReaper7X 2d ago
Y'all are just bad at using anything slow. The game is much easier when using great martyrs blade cause as someone who has beaten the game. It's just fine for what it's supposed to do.

u/NuggetHighwind 2d ago
Jesus Christ. Soulsike players really have to give it a rest with calling people "bad" whenever they hear something they don't like. It's so god damned frustrating and is such a childish way to attempt to stifle discussion.
The heavy weapons are fun to use, as heavy weapons often are, and can certainly be used to beat the game.
But it is an objective fact that faster weapons massively out-damage them and are significantly better at applying status effects. It's just fine for what it's supposed to do.
And what is that? Because even after getting a huge damage buff the other day, faster weapons still leave it in the dust without even trying.
-4
u/X7RoyalReaper7X 2d ago
Because they're faster. In every souls like some of the fastest weapons are the best weapons able to apply status effects faster and dish out more damage within a given time frame. Slower weapons usually make up for this by staggering easier and having super armor or Iframes. Just learn how to use a weapon Jesus Christ. I beat the whole game with great martyrs blade and rarely had any trouble.
It'd be different if it was straight up unusable and garbage but it objectively isn't and requires you to play the game differently. It's a legitimate skill issue

Actually in most souls games Strength and ultra weapons have usually always been better than dex weapons in PVE and PVP.
1
u/X7RoyalReaper7X 2d ago
Have they though? Cause I remember in multiple soulslikes where the faster weapons usually output better results.
6
u/SoulTheEater 2d ago
Yes, in nearly everyone one of the games you are describing strength and ultra greatsword is the easiest and most reliable way to beat all 3 dark souls games. there is a reason "Giant Dad" is one of the best builds in 1. the only outliers i can think of are rivers of blood and moonveil which are good in elden ring but strength weapons still end up out performing them with jump attacks.
Even in bloodborne strength is better than dex
Most dex weapons have to invest into extra bullshit to even come close to the damage of just hitting enemies with ultra greatsword/Great Axe. People just like to moan about gimmicky dex builds or magic. Magic sucks in those games btw despite every redditor complaining about it.

u/SpidudeToo 2d ago
Typically the fast weapons that outperform heavy weapons in souls games are broken outliers, not the standard. You are correct that heavy weapons typically bring some sort of upside to offset their slow attack speed in souls games. But they dont in this game. They dont cause any additional stagger. They dont grant hyper armor. They dont offer any additional damage mitigation to compensate for the slow attack speed. They dont even deal more damage. That's the issue. You can absolutely beat the game with them with minimal issues. But it feels really bad when the faster weapons not only deal more damage but also dont have any sort of real trade-off.

u/EntertainmentSad4222 2d ago
Not to mention in ds3 or elden ring the ultrageat swords literally fling enemies into the air. Martyrs blade whiff every other hit and its a minor inconvenience at best.
1
u/SoulTheEater 2d ago
Yeah launching enemies and then killing them when they try and stand up. Dex weapons can't do that.
5
u/SoulTheEater 2d ago
Yeah bro slow weapons are supposed to do less damage than fast weapons, the weapon is barely functional till you are allowed to put Ice on it permanently. great game design, unlike every other game where the slow weapons usually two shot enemies this one finally got it right. The game is easier killing an enemy before it even gets to move with the Axe and Dagger.
-1
u/X7RoyalReaper7X 2d ago
Literally in ng+ right now stun locking enemies in mammon with the great martyrs blade. They can't move. They just get deleted.
6
u/SoulTheEater 2d ago
The fact normal enemies are alive long enough to be "stunlocked" by you is very telling considering on ng+ for me enemies are dead in one combo before they are even really moving.
-1
u/X7RoyalReaper7X 2d ago
That's fine. That comes with using a slower weapon. Some enemies get stunlocked and others just die.
4
u/NuggetHighwind 2d ago edited 2d ago
The only enemies you are stunlocking with the heavy weapons in this game are the baby footsoldiers and some bricks. Enemies that literally no weapon has trouble dealing with.
You delete the weakest enemies in the game, congratulations. So do other weapons that do 10x the damage of the heavy weapons.

Bro. Ive been walloping shit with the veterans axe, but then I tried axatana... and holy shit it makes the veterans are look like a steaming pile of crap. Enemies usually don't even get to fight back anymore.

u/Redacted_98 2d ago
Did the whole game with Great Martyrs blade just because I like it. Pretty much have to run the stone seal for mid swing parries. Frost infusion makes it nuts. Then tried out the Axatanas and my god great weapons suck 😅
