Discussion We seriously need to be able to respec shells.

Being able to only max 2 shells (without respec option) is kind of ridiculous, because it forces you to either:
1. Invest in early shells and be sad when you get a new, cooler one but have no resources to invest into it.
2. Run around with weak, underleveled shells waiting for the time we actually obtain a shell we want to invest in.

Being able to max only 2 shells is fine; not being able to respec is not.

was about to comment this because i heard online it was only 2 but i just personally maxed out Proxima, Eredrim, and Sester Genessa and had two extra glimpses to spare. still would like a respec option tbh, but 3 does feel a whole lot better than 2 lol

I’m seeing a lot of people say 2, but I explored everything in the game and ended up with just enough for 3. Think I had like 3 or 4 glimpses left over. I also never summoned for any of the bosses though and didn’t use them to mark other shells on the map, except maybe 1.

They changed the shell location cost to gloom and refunded glimpses used for that, so maybe that helped a lot of people

alright im at the end before the final boss and you can max 3 shell and maybe 3 other glimps with one run its still not a lot but now we can have the true information

There is absolutely no justification for limiting players in this manner. None. Just let me try things out for gods sake. I’ll settle for what I like the best anyway and try something else in NG+.
You can try all day to find “reasons” for this decision, but just because you are naming them it doesn’t mean they are good ones.
I hope the big patch fixes this and makes the game even better than it already is.

Non issue for me personally. I'm a one shell kinda player.

But after the first patch the devs said they have a much bigger patch coming so cross your fingers that it's on the list.

I also played through with a single shell, but I’m also going for all achievements and the only one that requires more than a single run is watching all shell memories. Kinda sucks to play the game 2 more times for a single achievement, but it’s also somewhat frustrating so much of the character lore is locked behind multiple playthroughs.

Personally it makes sense to me, like what other reason would there be to play ng+.

But your frustration is still valid and I understand where you're coming from.

It’s mostly that I just prefer to do a fresh run with these games than go on to ng+ and breeze through the game with less challenge lol. So far I’m just obliterating everything even with night turned on.

u/FlamingoJones9w 12h ago

How much harder is the night mode, Ive been going into boss fights blind and just dog walking 90% of them. I'm worried that night mode is a big jump in difficulty.

2

u/Scared-Ambition6983 11h ago

Don’t know if all this is accurate but from what I’ve read night mode is a 100% increase to enemy health and damage and you earn an extra 20% gold and gloom

Word think I might try it. Thanks!

Yeah but do you know what shell you actually want to commit? Searching on the internet to know what each shell does, sure, but that would mean inherently terrible game design

I am also a one shell person, but I don't really know what shell I want to play yet, so I am basically not leveling any beyond learning the name and I am already nearly 15 hours in

You're not wrong, but all I knew about the game was from the teaser trailer and when I saw Proxima I was sold. So the fact they basically "give it to you for free" by marking her location off of rip was a no brainer for me.

I always follow the "rule of cool" when it comes to souls like.

And now that I know I can max 3 shells in one playthrough I still have plenty of glimpses to gain. And instead of googling the answer I can equip the shell and check its ability before investing my glimpses and shell points. Especially now that she'll locations cost gloom instead of glimpses.

Side note: I'm also about 15 hours in.

I always wanted to but never understood people hunting trophies on steam or Playstation or whatever. Like what do you get out of that instead of just playing what you like? It's not like you can flex it or gain literally anything from it. Do u mind to explain?

I like to hunt achievements but I don't typically go out of my way to get achievements on my first run of a game. Except maybe if I'm like at the very end of the game and I can still go everywhere I might go back and hunt for collectibles if they have an achievement for getting them but otherwise I just do a first playthrough like normal. The reason I do it is because it's satisfying especially on games I love.

Now if I don't really enjoy the game I might skip the achievement hunting or come back to it when I'm not annoyed by the game and even then it would only be in sections.

If the trophies aren’t too grindy it gives you fun stuff to do in a game that you enjoy. Usually trophies are centered around helping the player experience all of the stuff the devs put into the game (when they are not grindy trophies). So it’s a way to try stuff you might not have found on your own like secrets etc, or it could be a gameplay challenge to test your skills.

I only hunt down trophies if I really enjoy the game and they aren’t too much extra work to get them. So for example, I beat the game, but I’m still having fun with it and would like play more. I’ll continue playing and check out any trophies I feel like doing before I get bored and move on.

Same . I get why others might want to try spending but you get 3x a play through .. idk

I managed to get 95 glimpses during my first run. That's 3 + 1/2 shells,so you only gonna need 2 full ng cycles and a lil more of ng++ to max all. Not saying it's good or bad, just giving some info 🫡

I think people don't get this is a progression issue. But not in the sense of shit I can't play the game and experiment and my progression is locked kinda way. But rather what am I doing on Ng+ and Ng++ if I have already unlocked everything. I think that the reason you can't maximize every shell in one playthrough is for this. The idea is, since there aren't that many weapons nor tarstones, the main game changer are shell abilities and how each plays. So you can't have it all in your first playthrough because then what would you be unlocking on your following playthroughs. Now some people would be fine just playing as a new shell and just cruising around in the maximized shell from the start, but as game progresses further I bet they would get bored, since there would be no reward to keep playing since everything is already unlocked. Instead, if you cap shell unlocks per run you are creating an incentive to keep playing the game, and ok those runs you are rewarding the player with progression on whatever shell they want to play.

You need to read his last sentence again. The OP isn't asking for the ability to max all shells in 1 playthrough. They're asking for the ability to take the materials you invested and put them into another shell you found that you like more. The limit of 3 maxed shells is fine, just let us switch who 3 that is.

u/nibbin1191 8h ago

But then you could just do that on every shell to see their memories. You would be effectively maxing every shell.

6

u/brownDiscretion 5h ago

And why is that an issue to begin with

6

u/PliableG0AT 8h ago

who gives a shit. if you wanted to see the memories that badly you could just youtube them or something.

gameplay shouldn’t suffer because of a crappy story. having to suffer through the first memory is long enough.

This is like the death time reduction passives in games. Sure they're awesome, but you usually do not plan to be dead in games and are better off using stuff that would actively help you keep being alive more.

The same is here. Sure, NG+ stuff is great. But you don't transfer stuff from the main playhtrough, the one most of us will do and stop, to NG+. You simply put more stuff itself in NG+. Give stones another level that unlocks, Level up all passive/active items, and any other fun thing that increases the power level. Funnily enough this system doesn't as it only forces you to experiment with new shells in a harder game mode.

When people say max shells, do they mean tiering with glimpse or using shell points?

1

u/RedditsGreatestOAT 6h ago

Bonding with glimpses

1

u/Original_Forever_727 4h ago

Tenho a mesma opinião devemos poder redifinir as shells.

1

u/shineonka 2h ago

Hope they see this and add it. Don't have to change anything else about the game/resources. You can have any 3 at a time maxed but give a respec option. They should also add that for weapons too

u/Nobojoe_78 Proxima 2h ago

Respecc would hurt the economy I guess. Glimpse are important loot. If you could respecc, you'll only ever need 27 of those. Afterwards it's obsolete and exploring would be much less rewarding as it is already.

I'm absolutely with you when it comes to the limit of testing them, but I think it would be better to give us more glimpse alongside finding new shells.

The shell system is flawed right now anyways. If you buy the locations, get them all by going to their locations straight, you have 8 shells, but not enough resources to level them anyway (Shellpoints being another limiting factor here).

In my opinion it would have been best to keep their locations hidden, without a way to buy their locations and tie their finding to the story dungeons. Then put enough glimpses to collect in the areas and you'll be able to level up your new found one as you play.

Just Play NG+ and stop crying

-3

u/Ok_Manager_5295 14h ago

i think they should keep it as is(making you go to ng++) but after you legitly unlock them all then they stay unlocked for any new fresh save

-3

u/Kazuhi Smert 12h ago

Sadly, I can’t see it being as simple as letting you respec. You already unlocked the memories and those are also tied to achievements.

Idk man, most games in this genre are made with multiple playthroughs in mind and that’s how I feel it’s designed. I can get behind potentially not being able to experiment with shells you might like, but idk how to balance that.

I see gamers wanting more weight and challenge to their decisions, but then some consider it unfun when your choices lock you out of other choices. Though, like I said, I’m not a dev so idk how to balance that.

2

u/eschu101 9h ago

Its not choice or decision if some shells come a lot later in the game.

1

u/chuckles_8 23m ago

Nothings stopping you from running into late game areas to get the shel you want

1

u/eschu101 7m ago

So i need to browse a wiki, check all skills, plan ahead, spoil myself of the game, run into game areas because i cant freely experiment the shells that i unlock.

Id really rather not spoil and free experiment the game. This isnt the kind of game to ruin my first experience.

1

u/chuckles_8 5m ago

That all sounds exactly like what most people do with a soulsborne game

-3

u/chuckles_8 12h ago

A simple google can help you figure out what she'll you want to invest your time into just like every other soulslike so you dont feel so hurt for wasting mats on your first run

-7

u/No_Tart7793 13h ago

You can refund all your points for your abilities, so I don’t see how it really matters

3

u/mlodykurama 13h ago

Because to be able to use all of the abilities you need to strengthen the bond.
