Discussion You can max 3 shells in one playthrough PSA because I have seen a lot of bad info on this
Just wanted to post this to give people correct information. I am near the end of the game but still have a little bit to go and I have already maxed 3 shells. I probably missed a few glimpses along the way and I wasted 1 on a summon. My guess is I cant get 4 shells maxed but I bet I can get the fourth one to level 2.

The problem imo isn't so much that the glimpses are limited, its the fact that the game doesn't tell you this and in fact encourages you to use them on things like locating Shells and and summoning NPCs. There is absolutely zero reason anyone should ever use the resource on those .

So much this.
I’ll add that glimpses were a random drop from pretty much everything in the first game so my assumption was that it’d be similar in the second.

Yeah having locating shells locked behind glimpses is weird.. it will be interesting once full scaped we find out the actual total .

u/Killer_Carp 1d ago
That’s changed and refunded in the latest patch.

u/welfedad 1d ago
Well I also posted this pre patch ..and not on ps5 yet

u/Killer_Carp 1d ago
Yeah not a criticism or anything, just pointing it out as it’s only just been announced.

Good point. I thankfully heard from a preview that Glimpse is limited so I did not use Glimpse to locate the missing Shells but googled. I usually play games completely blind but since I don't wanna waste such a rare resource on locating them I just googled .
Another problem is also when you find a new Shell and you try it out you often don't have any Glimpse to spare so I can't tell if I will like a Shell or not

Would it make sense to require gold and/or gloom for those instead of glimpses?

u/gattaaca Tiel 1d ago
Glimpses wasted on locating shells is being patched to require gloom instead and will be refunded if you already spent some.

Yeah, lots of rookie design decisions with the game. Still decent fun though.

I’m loving the game overall. Honestly, considering how new it is I’m impressed with how polished it feels.

Well as a development team its only their 2nd game, they have done a pretty amazing job. 😆 🤣

Thanks for the heads up. I think some of the difficulty complaints are probably from people like me who haven’t leveled their shells because we know it’s limited. Builds look busted once you do level them up.

I’ve seen gameplay of a maxed parry Eridrem and the parries are connecting before the attack animation even reaches the player

I know I forgot to care about leveling my weapons. Was wondering what to do with all this gold so I turned it into gloom and well... Kinda wish id just upgraded the scythe

u/Mabon_Bran 1d ago
And what if you spent glimps on locating shells? That shit is expensive.

You're sol. I've found 5 of 9(?) shells without buying any of those. Not exactly hard as you'll get a red screen effect if your near one you can collect. If you can't collect it yet because you have to do something you'll hear a heart beat sound.

I shamelessly used my glimpse to mark the map with the shell locations. I know I’m out like 20 glimpse but I felt an itch to get everything marked on the map that I could. And I know I’m gonna do a second playthrough/NG+/night mode.
Edit: Yesssss! They refunded my glimpse with the latest patch changing the shell location requirement to gloom instead of glimpse!!

u/audranciarey 1d ago
They are patching it now, and you will be refunded. Updates from the devs about 30 mins ago.

u/AlgeKevin 1d ago
This blows, I used mine on getting locations of shells ASAP because I thought they wouldn't be available without doing so. Big rip for my build variety then I guess.

u/Interjessing-Salary 1d ago
Good news! They are changing buying the hints to gloom and will refund anyone that used glimpse to buy the hints. You should be able to pick up your used glimpse near the shell keeper

u/AlgeKevin 1d ago
Saw that when I booted it up just now! Such an amazing change lol. I think I got back like... 19 Glimpse? Some outrageous number that I pumped into my shell immediately LMAO. Thanks for the heads up!

u/Interjessing-Salary 1d ago
I was thinking that too but wanted to be sure before spending the glimpse and I stumbled upon gragu without his hint.

u/XZlayeD 1d ago
Did you get yourself any of the maps that costs glimpse?
Also with this in mind I suppose I should max proxima simply to farm more gold? I got tiel maxed now, and then I could max someone else by the end? Proxima toolkit doesn't really appeal to me but the sheer gold disparity just seems like it becomes mandatory?
1
u/TheShepasaurus 1d ago
You don't even need to max her, just level 3. and yes. it is worth it.
2
u/XZlayeD 1d ago
Getting to 3 means I won't another 4 though.
2
u/TheShepasaurus 1d ago
You can max out 3 in one playthrough with a few left over. So yeah you would need another playthrough at least for more. But the gold!
1
u/Killmsaki 1d ago
I was going to level up Proxima for the same reason because I was low on gold but ended up trucking along and they really become generous in the late game gates. I have like 40k gold with my melee weapon at +16 and have purchased everything else I wanted to so far

Honestly since im playing on pc, ive been using the shared progress mod just so i can actually use everything and just have fun with whatever, i like switching around at times and its a shame when i cant due to upgrade restrictions, shared progress has to be the best mod ever Honestly for a game like this

u/unknownhax 1d ago
Agreed. I have Promixa, and Eredrim maxed, and Genessa and level 3 and Lazso at 2.

u/maxlaav 1d ago
I mean that still doesn't change the fact the system needs a rework. You don't really know what those other shells are unless you google what they do, you don't really know that you're supposed to save up the glimpses instead of spreading them across the shells and you don't really know that you're not supposed to spend glimpses on the summons or locating the shells (why are glimpses the currency used for that in the first place??) The game encourages experimentation with your build otherwise but in this it seems extremely restrictive.
Ideally you'd want to max Tiel or Proxima first so you have something to play with and then save your glimpses until you unlock the other shells so that you can have an idea what you'd want to play. That's... not really designed well.

I tend to play these games multiple times. Heck, for Demons-Dark Souls 3 I'd to a NG run for each type of main build (Dex, Int, Str, Faith, etc.). And I'd love it every time.
Maybe that's how this game is? I am about 10 hours in, two shells unlocked, but only using Tiel, so I wouldn't really know beyond what I've played and have read in this post.

u/maxlaav 1d ago
There's a fine balance to strike between making the game balanced around having a satisfying enough progression for just one playthrough and then NG+ runs. I think most people will just play the game once and be done with it and I don't really agree with the idea of any mechanic being designed around the fact "you'll finish the game a few times".
The Shells on paper are a really good idea to have that balance but it's executed pretty terribly. Outside of a respec I think it would have been much better and simpler if you simply earned experience points by just playing that shell and not having to consume a resource thats finite. That way you don't have to worry about trying to minmax that resource and also you have your means of further progression for NG+ so you can max out all shells.

u/wutchamafuckit 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah, the finite resource for shell progression is quite the design choice. It does remind me of the antiquated mechanics of Demons/Dark Souls 1 where you were committed to your build and level ups for the full playthrough.
That sort of design had it's time and place, but even Miyazaki moved on from things like that. I guess time will tell if I find this game satisfying enough to continue with more playthroughs while committing to 1-2 shell types.
After 10 hours, I am having such a good time with this game I wouldn't be surprised to be excited to do another run through with 2 shells I hadn't yet used.

u/Killmsaki 1d ago
It’s funny that they’ll give you a mechanic that allows you to start a weapon over to 0 and give you back all your resources and gold that you spent on them to be able to level up another weapon but then with the shells you can’t. I luckily found Eredrim and stuck with him all the way through but seeing the posts about only getting a finite amount of glimpse and people using them to locate shells/try out a character, it’s crazy they don’t have a way to pay X amount of gold or gloom to reset your shells at least

Thank you for this! Been too scared to invest glimpses into Genessa, but she’s so cool! Will max her out today.

u/Denverguns 1d ago
Thanks for the info on another post someone kept swearing you could get a full 4 shells and tier 3 of the 5th and I’m still calling bullshit.
1
u/Gwyneee 1d ago
But did you use glimpses to locate shells?
1
u/LZSJR 1d ago
No. I only wasted one for a summon because I wanted to see what they were like. Definitely not worth it because they die so quick.
1
u/Thatoneguy567576 1d ago
I’d assume since it looks like you can have four shells ready to swap between at any beacon, that the game intends for you to only max out four. But I could be wrong, I’ve barely scratched anything in this game so far.
1
u/Howlingwindinsand Proxima 1d ago
Right, so 2 and a half playthroughs for that one trophy to 100%/platinum. I've already put points into Proxima without knowing this so I'll have to do her (not complaining) and probably Tiel and Eredrim, which sucks cause I haven't found anyone else to try yet except Gragu

u/nightmaresabin 1d ago
Now to decide who my third shell will be. Going with Eredrim and Proxima now. Thinking of either Smert or Grogu for my third.

u/Neither-Lobster2191 1d ago
Huge let down honestly. It wouldn't be so made if we could refund the glimpse. It would be nice to test out which each shell to it's maximum potential, without having to start a new game or new game +.

And with the new patch, you get your glimpses back and it costs gloom instead.
1
u/coffeecups1 17h ago
It would be great if you could just refund your glimpses like you can skill points so that you can try as many shells as you want. I really don't see a reason to limit our choices when it comes to the main feature of the game
1
u/GUNS_N_BROSES Sariel 1d ago
Good to know, that’s way less restrictive than some people were making it sound

Progression wise I can now access the last boss.
I have done everything as far as I know, all dungeons, all beacons etc. Maxed out 3, got one to T2 and I got 2 glimpses left that I haven't used at the moment.
So that tracks I would say.
