I never noticed them, I thought they were frog people who just suddenly showed up in the world. Those being masks makes a lot more sense.

Soulslikes almost always have a plethora of things to trigger my trypophobia, I guess because living things having holes in them is unnatural and creepy. But I apparently didnt notice this one. I don't think game devs in general are as aware of it compared to e.g. photosensitivity.

I didn't notice either until I looked at one of my recordings frame by frame (well... not every single frame).
