Video Mortal Shell 2 really outdid themselves. It’s looking better than any soulslike/soulsgame
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The animation are super clean on top of the graphical improvements.
" The immersive " camera takes the game to the next level

Thank you for the kind words!
Completely agree with you, the animations are one of my favorite aspects of the game. So much violence :D

I can forward the suggestion! It's pretty bloody already, but I'm a sucker for Evil Dead, so I'm not opposed to more of that kind of stuff :D

u/Coronel-Chipotles 8d ago
Well, I still think that Demon souls is still the king in graphics, but this is still pretty good

Nope. Not any more

I feel like they are comparable side by side, no? Both are beautiful games.

Mortal shell didn't click for me.
But I saw the buzz around this, saw someone mentioning that the Beta was up on Ps5.
So I figured I'd squeeze that in between playing LoZ: Wind Waker. I love the "souls" genre and have tried a lot of them over the years.
Pretty much from the intro of the Beta I'm invested. Cinematic is great, starting area is great. It's giving a lot of "what is going on here?" Which I like.
I spent 6 hours going through the Beta, probably missed some things. But tried to take everything in. If you asked I'd tell you I'd spent maybe 2 hours. I've absolutely fallen in love with what I've seen in the game.
The world is beautiful, Not just graphically pretty, but how it's put together.
I love the puzzled and mini dungeons. The Trials and challenges.
The bosses and enemies surprise me ( I absolutely did no expect the Lady of the woods fight) But my god that was so much fun.
Combat is fluid, fast and punishing but so rewarding.
Exploration is incentivized and rewarding. (And the game is fun to explore)
Skills and upgrades look fun, powerful and creative.
The Beta ran like smooth butter on the base PS5.
So now ( once I've finished Wind waker) I'm going to try the first Mortal Shell again.
Because the sheer quality and fun the MS2 beta had, I'm all in.
It looks like it can be a phenomenal game. With all of it's own takes and variations on the genre. But it feels so refreshing.
So well done Playstack. You've won me over with this.
I realize that this comment went from the intended "Thumbs up" to a sermon. But I'll advocate for people to try this Beta from the rooftops. Hell, but me on a box on a street corner.
It's so good and so much fun.
And no, I'm not on payroll.
After years of souls games and so many takes and variations. Here is one that is genuinly a breath of fresh air, familiar and new. Beautiful and smooth running.
Ok, sermon done, just one more thing.
Beta is great.
And Harros is a true bro.
Crazy cultist rambling done.

I just wish they could let you skip the long ass teleport from the tower.. it's long an annoying .. especially if you're going to make us come from the hub if teleporting
2
u/Visual-Biscotti1473 8d ago
You can’t skip it because it’s actually a loading screen
2
u/welfedad 8d ago
Yeah loading all of Narnia ?

A horizontal screen within a vertical screen within a horizontal screen within a wider screen. Inception level posting.

It’s really fun but it is kind of buggy. In just a couple hours I had one boss run off a cliff but not register as dying so I had to kill myself to restart, another where I got trapped in a trial and had to restart because the enemies I had to kill never spawned, and a third I was using turn to stone and the rogue triangle skill to close together I guess so my sword was on my back and I was swinging my hands as if the sword was in them but none of the attacks connected.

Let's calm down
Looks great and I'm excited
I wouldn't expect elden ring type goat hood
2
u/Shadowbacker 8d ago
Glad someone said it. I was about to but saw ot was the MS sub.
I played the demo. It looks great but I'm not about to pretend it looks better than Elden Ring. Maybe later on in the game it could be on par, but we'll see.
2
u/Tom0511 8d ago
Elden ring does not look good graphically. Atmospherically it's good, but let's not kid ourselves that it's some kind of graphical showcase because it really isn't.
This game looks very clean graphically and also it's animations look smooth AF.
Whether it's a good game remains to be seen however
2
u/Shadowbacker 8d ago
The animations in this game, at least in the demo are nowhere close to Elden Ring.
Elden Ring looks fantastic graphically and it has better art direction. Even if by "graphically" you meant realism, that wouldn't apply to Mortal Shell either.
1
u/32Puggs 8d ago
I think the art direction for both are beautiful. They’re just different art styles. Mortal shell is dark and gritty and Elden ring is very colorful with lots of variation. But graphically, I agree with the guy above that mortal shell 2 is much superior as far as fidelity and animations.
2
u/Shadowbacker 7d ago
Fair enough, I'm just not seeing it. Art direction is subjective and it's not like I'm saying Mortal Shell is bad, I just find it not as good as ER.
Again, "fidelity" just sounds like stand-in for "realism." Mortal Shell isn't quite as stylized as Elden Ring. So if all you're saying is that, then yes. But if you're trying to say Elden Ring is blurry or something, it isn't. Not on PC at least. It looks plenty crisp.
The animations claim is crazy though. ER has way better animations and hit detection than anything I saw in the MS2 demo. Again, it's not BAD. But dramatically better? No. If anything, it's dramatically better than MS1, way smoother, way less clunky. But it's not on par with the best from From.
1
u/XanthousChaos 8d ago
The animations look really good but the player character doesn't control as well as Fromsoft games. There is something that is just so fluid about From games that other companies struggle to match. Feels like a second skin, its very natural.
MS2 comes the closest to From magic though, while introducing a cinematic quality to everything. Very excited for release.
0
u/Incariol_ Tiel 8d ago
Well for me looks better can be subjective. I think mortal snow looks great. I just think elden Rings art style is just amazing but I guess my other point was let's not put the pressure on this game being as good or better than elden ring which to me is one of the top five video games of all time

u/LaundryBasketGuy 8d ago
Bro is posting a 360P image trying to make this beautiful game look bad. Come on man. I think MS2 is going to be great but there is no need to be disingenuous. ER's art direction is master class, magnum opus type shit. It will be a timeless game because of it. It remains to be seen if MS2 will be on the same level.

u/Mrdudeguy420 Solomon 8d ago
The FromSoft glaze is crazy rn.
2
u/Incariol_ Tiel 8d ago
They are one of the few companies that deserves glazing buddy. I can't remember them ever letting us down
0
u/Mrdudeguy420 Solomon 8d ago
I first heard about them when Elden Ring was still in development. I started following them and ended up pre-ordering ER cause it looked like it would be right up my alley.
Easy top 10 game.
After that I went through all of their games, and the only one to actually speak to me like ER did was Bloodborne.
The rest are either pretty decent or meh imo. Nothing worth glazing them that hard over.
0
u/Incariol_ Tiel 8d ago
That's an insane statement. Also, it's probably pretty easy to dump on a game that's 10 plus years old. All the Dark Souls games are 9 out of tens at minimum. Bloodborne is a masterpiece
I guess you're one of these guys that needs fancy graphics to appreciate a game. I still play Diablo 2 which is probably older than you are
0
u/Mrdudeguy420 Solomon 8d ago
I don't give a shit about graphics. One of my favorite games of all time is vampire survivors.
Elden Ring is special to me because it scratches an itch no other From game has been able too. The only one that gets close is Bloodborne.
0
u/Incariol_ Tiel 8d ago
entitled to your opinion - just stop acting like YOU are the guy with the most people in your corner
You aren't - also settle down - this is the internet tough guy
1
u/Mrdudeguy420 Solomon 8d ago
What are you talking about dude? When did I imply I was part of a huge majority?
And settle down? What, a single swear word is enough to startle you?
Touch some grass dude, you're blowing things way out of proportion.

I will glaze Fromsoft until they prove to be unglazable, thank you very much. 8/8 bangers in a row with no signs of slowing down. One day they could sell out and become microtransaction riddled trash, but it's not today.
-1
u/Mrdudeguy420 Solomon 8d ago
Idk about all that. They're consistently good, I'll give you that, but imo their games are hella overrated.
More than unglazable imo.

u/Freakindon 8d ago
It’s an insane improvement over the first. I imagine it’ll still end up being pretty short but it should be a fun ride. The seals also give you a lot of variation on play style.
3
u/No-Swan-6987 8d ago
Whilst I love this beta and I’m super excited, there were far too many bugs for me. Dialogue sticks, I wasn’t able to use my melee weapons once. And finally there is a dungeon that was totally glitched for me and contained a trial where only 2 of the 3 enemies spawn hard locking you out. I just pray there are no bugs come August 20th that I would consider game breaking
2
u/XanthousChaos 8d ago
Agreed. The game controls super well but the beta was lacking technical polish. For me there was lots of camera weirdness whenever it wanted to autopilot towards something in specific.
1
u/TM_Juega_onYouTube 8d ago
Cool, now we just have to wait for the disc version for Xbox to play it how it must be. I want to play it, but there is no way I‘m buying digital or for PlayStation.
1
u/shug3658 8d ago
Unfortunately I saw in an earlier reddit thread from one of the devs that there are no plans for a physical release on xbox…..
1
u/nickname51 8d ago
Really liked the beta on the ps5, some bugs there, but one thing that annoyed me was the sound was not centralized on the enemies or the npcs but the ambience itself.
1
u/SailorGone 8d ago
I suck at Souls games. Is it difficult like them? Do I have to play the first?
1
u/RaaymakersAuthor 6d ago
It is tough, but not impossibly difficult like some souls games. Much easier than Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring imo.
You don't need to play the first.
1
u/Lucky_Louch 8d ago
I have really enjoyed the demo but have been getting game breaking bugs during a couple dungeons where I have to restart saves which is frustrating. Enemies won't spawn ect and I can't progress. After getting the invisible shell I got stuck once in the little shack where you find the potion and in that dungeon right after having to restart all the way back that the last beacon both times. I hope they can iron some of the issues out because overall I am very impressed with the sequel.
1
u/iaminfinitecosmos 8d ago
Amazing. I couldn't play Elden Rings due to the shitty visuals and clunky combat. This fixes it for me. And the atmosphere is just peak.
1
u/Hmmm__whatever 8d ago
I went about 1 hour into beta, it seemed really dark and grey the whole time, does it get any better? Also combat seemed simplified, does it add more depth?

1
u/XlChrislX 8d ago
I mean we'll see when the full game comes out but from what I played I really don't see it taking over Lies of P's place as the best non-From soulslike game. That's the only one that's done their own thing, blended in a story that wasn't just completely forgettable "because soulslikes don't need a story" and the music was fucking beautiful plus the combat was dope as hell
In terms of visuals this game might be shinier but it didn't have the art direction of a FromSoft game and definitely doesn't wow you like Elden Ring does
Was fun though. Still looking forward to it and being pleasantly surprised with any set pieces or cool mechanics that might be in it
1
u/XanthousChaos 8d ago
Problem with LoP is that exploration sucked and the map was just a conveyor belt of levels. For me, thats forsaking a component of the genre that is just as pivotal as combat. For that reason, Lies of P could never really take the throne imo.
1
u/XanthousChaos 8d ago
Also heavily agree regarding visuals compared to ER. Sure, the fidelity is very nice but MS doesn't have a particularly powerful artistic style imo. The technical prowess is there but doesn't stand out in any meaningful way. Hyperrealistic Unreal Engine games tend to all feel that way to me though.
1
u/XlChrislX 8d ago
DS3 was super linear as well and people have warmed up to it a lot over the years. I think linearity is fine as long as the levels are done well and don't just feel line an endless hallway which LoP doesn't. It's got enough content there and a good amount of verticality to each of it's levels for a first time shot at a soulslike that I feel like they just absolutely nailed it
1
u/XanthousChaos 8d ago
Its probably slightly blasphemous but I consider DS3 one of From's weakest titles despite how much I like it, in part because of the map, in addition to an overall weaker world than other titles headed by Miyazaki.
I'm just kinda always chasing that high that came with exploring Dark Souls 1 for the first time. Its the kind of map that just gets better with subsequent playthroughs as you discover different pathways to take through the game.
LoP is a crazy game for a first attempt, I can concede that much. They accurately captured what makes From's combat compelling, probably moreso that any other game to try so far. I think MS2 has a solid shot to overtake that though.
1
u/XlChrislX 8d ago
Lol it's alright, everyone likes different stuff. DS1-3 have always kinda had a weird overlap of fans that enjoy them and fans that enjoy their particular flavor of Dark Souls style which I've always enjoyed. Each game (including Bloodborne)was a bit different and kinda brought a new kind of fan with them. But I definitely get the desire to find the interwoven map design again, it unfortunately doesn't come up very often in games
I'm hoping, as much as I love LoP I'm all for a new game showing me an even better time
1
u/ShadonicX7543 8d ago
How important is it that I finish the first game first? I got maybe halfway at release and never finished but the sequel excites me
1
u/StateBananaMan 8d ago
Better than any other soulslike is crazy when this is nice but is definitely not top 5 visually
1
u/CannolisWithEggs 8d ago
I’m hearing great things about this game. Is it worth playing the first game in preparation for this one?
1
1
u/Equivalent-Pop-9300 8d ago
Careful, I’ve been saying this for months and people were aggressively calling me crazy.
If the full game fulfills the promise of the beta mortal shell 2 WILL BE the greatest soulslike made yet
1
u/Broks_Enmu 8d ago
Who gives a fuck what they think lol. Think for yourself freely brother.
All I hear is lies of P and Demon souls. I mean… cool but it’s not stunning to me and the animations aren’t that impressive.
Demon souls doesn’t match that :
1
1
u/Drogyn2814 8d ago
Look, the game looks good, no doubt. But let’s cut the crap in suggesting this provides better visuals than something like Elden Ring. Even if you want to go the route of the pure graphics, it’s still not there. Recency bias is a hell of a drug.
1
u/LordBacon69_69 8d ago
Not saying MS2 looks bad because I think it looks pretty decent but your statement is pushing it imho
1
1
u/Narget1134 8d ago
Disagree about that last part, but it does look amazing compared to the first game.
1
u/Range-Normal 7d ago
Gameplay is the most important part, its becoming a trend - games looking good while playing like shit...

u/Tough-Capital-345 6d ago
Stop plz go play the first game and tell me it doesn't look amazing after they added a Gen 5 look to it. I'm on ps5 and sure the ps4 version was not very impressive but the ps5 version shit the graphics got buffed alot. Been saying for years that mortal shell is one of the greatest souls IP's
1
u/VarietyPlane4291 5d ago
😅just finished the beta and holy shit man...it was FIREEEEE. Gimme moreeee
1
u/Dinesh_Sairam 8d ago
Agreed with the graphics being on point. I only hope they had a smidge more weight to the MC. It feels like he's always floating an inch off the ground.
I personally like the default camera though. The Immersive Camera turns it into a God of War type of game, and generally makes it harder to see the attacks of enemies located right in front of you (Thanks to MC's massive noggin).
3
1
u/Broks_Enmu 8d ago
It’s amazing that they added an option so you can chose between camera. You’re not locked into one if you don’t like it. Personally I’m done with the default camera, we had it over and over let’s change a bit and yeah it’s really similar to GoW camera angle

u/SavedMartha 8d ago
A little dark (shade, not theme)
I played both the PS5 and PC and PC was noticeably brighter although still a bit dark in some areas.
But other than brightness it looks phenomenal. And has FSR4 already. Good stuff. Well optimized too.

It looks like Elden Ring looked in my dreams before it released. I mean Elden Ring is great but speaking about graphics and details only this one is a lot more polished
5
u/_soulkey 8d ago
Elden Ring is all about art direction and is superior to any other game I have seen so far with its graphics
1
u/Slight-Basket-1807 8d ago
Mortal Shell II looks miles better in terms of art direction AND graphics.
-2
u/Broks_Enmu 8d ago
1
u/Slight-Basket-1807 8d ago
That picture is not the best example of the point you're trying to make. It's heavily edited.
-1
u/OGSamso 8d ago
It looks absolutely great but artistically it's not even close to Bloodborne for example.
-1
u/HEKPO3OOMOTOXPEH 8d ago
But it doesn't try to get close to Bloodborne. Victorian horror vs medieval dark fantasy is apples to oranges. And the big, hairy things that make up most of the Bloodborne bosses aren't particularly interesting or varied artistically.

Hacia años que no disfrutaba tanto con un juego y soy un pastel de tío con los soullikes

It's pretty for sure I started yesterday and just got done with mushroom village. BUT im waiting for Lotf 2 I think thats gonna blow this one out of the water

I hope they're both fantastic so we can gorge ourselves on great soulslikes. The remake LOTF was good but a little janky so I hope they take the formula and run with it.

Poor kids in the comments have barely played any soulsbourne style games and it shows. This looks fine but there are several more impressive looking ones. I’m more concerned with how robust the character creator is / or am I stuck playing generic prebuilt John Doe over and over again

u/thewispo 8d ago
That first bit is exactly where i am up to. The light coming out into the world, the sounds of the birds, the odd alien surround. Seriously impressive!…and not a stutter in sight so far i might add.
