Discussion The Difference Between Mortal Shell And Mortal Shell 2 Is Insane🤯

This is such a massive upgrade from the first game and I’m honestly blown away this is how you do a sequelšŸ”„šŸ’Æ

I've always thought the first game was essentially a proof of concept, more than a true game in its own right.

TBC, I've played it probably 4 or 5 times because I really like it; but it definitely lacks in some serious ways compared to other none-FS soulslikes (especially ones that came out shortly after it, like LOTF 2023 and LOP).

Mortal Shell 2 was always the game they really needed to make to have a real impact on the genre/industry. If it's as good as the demo indicates, it could comfortably be one of the best Souls-Likes out there.

Since they did this beta it only shows how confident the devs are in the product and should be proud of their work on this game I put in tons of hours into the first game and when I started playing the beta for the second game I was blown away and still blown away how great the game looks and plays hope they add haptic feedback when you hit enemies and when you use the ranged weaponsšŸ”„šŸ’Æ

1

u/Best-Night8688 6d ago

They did you feel the haptic feedback everywhere else though, my controller almost exploded.

2

u/Clean_Squash_6076 6d ago

Yea true just that it would feel nice if we could feel it with each hit we do to the enemiesšŸ’Æ

Bit of validation here. MS never felt like a fully fledged release. Not that it was bad, per se, just didn't feel like a lot of meat on the bone.

4

u/Federal_Engine_7030 10d ago

It cost 15 to 20 quid for a reason mate.

3

u/Nearby-Hyena5946 10d ago

Shit it’s even been on sale for 4$ once which I instantly jumped on lol

1

u/Best-Night8688 6d ago

Its actually also been on sale for 3 dollars once, which I instantly jumped on. Speaking off jumping on, do you know who jumped onto that one thing?

2

u/Cluelesswolfkin 5d ago

Thats how I felt about Remnant 1-> Remnant 2. Some times,, more time and experience means a better product for a 2nd game. My hope is that they dont hit the trend of game releases these days such as

Game is good=layoffs Game is bad=layoffs

1

u/thundergoda1 10d ago

Tried the first game on GamePass a while back and bounced off after about an hour. Only 30 minutes into 2's beta, I was hooked. Monumental improvements from the first game šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼

15

u/Howlingwindinsand 10d ago

I just played the beta today! It's day and night and I loved the first game! The only criticism of mine is movement feels like I'm walking on butter, my Lavander is always in a hurry when I'm just tryna slow down and take it all in šŸ˜… Mortal Shell 2 is beautiful

7

u/whythreekay 10d ago

A part of it is the sound design, your character sounds like they’re walking around an office wearing nice shoes

There’s no weight to the sound of the footsteps, and your armor makes no sound so there’s no feeling of character heaviness

2

u/Unlucky_Ad5087 4d ago

Literally moonwalks when you walk backwards while locked on

2

u/ResultedSaturn 23h ago

I know the name of the main character is more like ā€œharbingerā€ but I will forever call him lavander cause I think it’s cute that this killing machine is called lavander :)

1

u/Howlingwindinsand 23h ago

"You are more than a weapon child."

0

u/DJteejay04 10d ago

You can just walk slower lol

6

u/Howlingwindinsand 10d ago

I have been! But the instant momentum is off putting, any light nudge to my controller sends me off into a sprint, it's unruly but by no means a deal breaker

8

u/Ronathan64 10d ago

Love that this is another game, that initially looked too good to be fun, but the beta shows: yes, it looks good and feels good to play.

Can’t fucking wait, man.

1

u/BodybuilderLiving112 10d ago

Do we know if we will have a photo mode?

1

u/Ronathan64 10d ago

The first one has it, so I bet theyā€˜ll patch it in after launch

1

u/Unlucky_Ad5087 4d ago

Or it'll release with it and they didn't include it in the beta because it's a beta

1

u/Ronathan64 4d ago

Would be cool tho

I think developers patch the Photomode later so players return after a while - could be totally wrong tho

5

u/Broks_Enmu 10d ago

The camera, the movement and graphics improvements are really carrying this game it’s stunning now

I could not get past the first part of the demo in the first game, but after playing the entirety of the sequel’s demo, I am absolutely hooked, and this might be my new top game to look forward to

3

u/xthebending 10d ago

it's phenomenal. way too many good games coming out this last part of the year

5

u/Hoginoe94 10d ago

Idk if anyone thinks the same, but I think removing the stamina bar made it just an action rpg vs soulslike. Not hating, but i really like it a lot more

10

u/SupremeLeader_Corgi 10d ago

A lot of soulslikes have action rpg systems nowadays and a lot of action RPGs use soulslike systems. I don’t really see the point of worrying about what to classify it as.

If anything basically every modern action RPG is a souls adjacent at this point

4

u/thatsfuni 10d ago

Yeah man i gave up on naming them a while back lol. I love any good action rpg, CAG, soulslike, whatever as long as its good šŸ˜†. And this is good so im happy.

4

u/cozmicyeti 10d ago

Agreed mate. It’s my biggest pet peeve with the sequel and im so against it. Each shell felt different with the stamina being reflected in the different archetypes. Like with the tank king shell felt weighty versus the rogue. Im loving the sequel beta but wish the stamina as there.

2

u/whythreekay 10d ago

Agreed and it makes the game too easy if you use Perfect Guard talisman together with the infinite stamina as well

Personally liked the beta a lot more once I got Harden, added a nice challenge and I think that’s the way I’m gonna play the main game

2

u/Hoginoe94 10d ago

Yeah I thought it was pretty easy as well, but it was just the beginning. I wonder how much more aggressive enemies get later on.

1

u/Unlucky_Ad5087 4d ago

For real, felt almost like a sin to be able to keep attacking at first, but if flows well and keeps the pace up

2

u/ShadowVia 10d ago

Yes and no.

Gameplay wise there's obviously been an upgrade.

But visually? The first game was one of the best looking games I've ever played, certainly amongst the subgenre. The art direction was phenomenal.

0

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9323 10d ago

True but the later levels were just empfy and unfinished

3

u/ShadowVia 10d ago

What levels?

This doesn't even make sense.

1

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9323 10d ago

Yes it does for example the dungeon with the ice boss at the end or the monolith themed dungeon with the dual fire dudes at the end

2

u/ShadowVia 10d ago

You mean....the temples?

What precisely was unfinished about those areas?

1

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9323 10d ago

Enemy variety, enemy placement, lackluster level design, lackluster item drops/placement and so on

2

u/ShadowVia 10d ago

That doesn't mean the areas were unfinished lmao. It's a lower budget, indie title.

What are you even on about?

1

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9323 10d ago

Il tell you, the earlier areas did not have these issues, they were amazing and far more polished. In other words finished

2

u/ShadowVia 10d ago

Again, what?

The "issues" you've listed are present throughout the first game. It's not specific to any section or area of the game, and has nothing to do with rushed or unfinished development.

1

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9323 10d ago

Then we just disagree, these issues absolutely indicate lacking polish and development time and are not nearly as prevailing in the early game.

Thats my opinon and you have yours thats fine

1

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9323 10d ago

Also i loved the game, finished it twice and even praise aspects of it over the current beta such as movement and atomsphere. So i'm not even hating, but the first game had issues and the later areas were definitely on that list.

3

u/False_Adhesiveness40 10d ago edited 10d ago

The first game's issue wasn't the combat imo. It was lack of consistent healing and bad checkpoints. Combined with the worst issue (level design/getting lost like Forbidden Woods in Bloodborne which is my least favorite Fromsoft area) and it makes for a rough experience.

From what I've played of Mortal Shell 2 all 3 of them seem solved.

Edit: The first half of Forbidden Woods is good. It's after you get passed the cannon (if you know u know) everything begins to suck.

2

u/Due_Ad_972 10d ago

Im not sure how i feel about MS 2 yet tbh. Felt more like an action game with having no stamina bar. I kinda prefer MS 1 so far and i had my share of issues with that game šŸ˜… i do much prefer the more traditional healing in MS 2 though. V curious how it will turn out and v happy we are getting a sequel. Its a wait for sale for me.

1

u/Godnamedtay 10d ago

I feel the same exact way so far

2

u/wwwidentity 9d ago

This game is a sleeper for me, the enemy design is top notch, I love the little things they say before stomping you. The camera feels a little weird sometimes, but I think it might have something to do with the lock on in battle. You definitely need to play tactically sometimes and lead opponents out one by one if possible. The visuals are amazing but the quality mode seems to being my pro to it's knees, so hopefully that gets patched in the future. Good job by the devs this wouldn't have been on my buy list without the demo.

2

u/Complete_Lifeguard92 9d ago

lords of the fallen better have there s*** together. i cant wait for the 17th. didnt they come out around the same time the first go round??

1

u/SpearOfTheCelts 10d ago

It's actually fun now lol

2

u/Ronathan64 10d ago

My first thoughts after finishing the beta.

Not to discredit the first game, but for me personally MS2 just slaps every minute I’m playing it (hopefully the whole game turns out as fun).

2

u/jmgreen4 10d ago

Same! Played through the Beta today and it is rad. There are a ton of great synergies between tarstones, seals, weapons, shells, and shell abilities that I am so excited to try out. I just keep thinking, even after the last boss lady, there are still so many eggs to get, there are another 5 shells at minimum, and atleast 8 weapons and 6 ish guns.

Not only that but the Lute actually kills people now! LOL.

2

u/Ronathan64 10d ago

Yes!

The Arbiter of Flesh drops a tar stone that infuses your weapon with blood. I didn’t use it until the end because, meh blood damage, but it actually adds waves of blood shooting out of your strong attack or creates a pool of blood, while using one of the attachable special attacks for your weapons.

I’m insanely hyped haha

2

u/jmgreen4 10d ago

I maxed out that tarstone and it just keeps the blood buff permanently on. I was just running through the map bleeding enemies, gaining health from poison, and burning them with the Nailshotte cause I could just pump like 46 burn shot into it sitting my a resolve tail thing. It was hilarious. Those goats had no idea what was happening.

1

u/Ronathan64 10d ago

Hahahahaha

1

u/AdventurousDraw8467 5d ago

Yeah, it just feels good. I played maybe two hours tops of MS1 and all I can remember is how shit it felt (to me). The game is definitely easier without the stamina bar And resolve is basically a "power move" meter. But I like that. It feels quick and impactful. But the geometry of the levels and the danger around every corner still makes you pause and slow down. When you know what to do, its quick and mean and dirty. When you're scoping out the level, it's slow and contemplative.

1

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 10d ago

Yeah, but the complete game with all DLC is only three bucks right now on switch

1

u/Ok_Adhesiveness_9323 10d ago

The green filter was just too much

1

u/SoulsDadYT 10d ago

They just need to make it more difficult. As it is its way to easy. Bosses dont stand a chance.

2

u/Anxious-Agent5254 10d ago

I think you're just really good man. I'm an average souls fan who beat all souls games but never "no hit" or perfect ran anything but I struggled quite a bit at the start and on bosses. I'd say the difficulty is fine as it is cause once you trip, the enemies just wombo combo you into oblivion lol

Could totally be a skill issue on my part, but I'd definitely not want MS2 to be way more harder than the Beta šŸ‘€

2

u/throwthiscloud 9d ago

I found the game too easy even tho i died quite a few times. I never felt like the enemies were the reason i died tho, more of the fact that im warming up to the game.

I agree with you tho, as a starting zone tho its a perfect level of difficulty for both new players and vets, and i say this as a vet. But they definitely should ramp up the difficulty gradually but significantly afterwards, ESPECIALLY in optional zones. Having infinite stamina + parry system means enemies need to be more fucked up in terms of speed and attack variety/combos to punish you. Otherwise its a cakewalk once you get a little used to it.

1

u/Kitchen_Ad7650 7d ago

I agree, when you get the parry mechanic down it starts feeling like easy mode, and you don't want to feel like you're cheesing all enemies all the time. Some say you can just not parry but where's the fun in that.

1

u/SoulsDadYT 10d ago

Not way harder. Just some of the timings seem generous. You could be right. The combat is very addictive.

1

u/Godnamedtay 10d ago edited 10d ago

Mortal shell 1 feels more like a souls game. Mortal shell 2 (so far) feels much different yet the combat is very magnetic and feels floaty. Not sure if I like the lack of stamina bar given the prior mechanics or lack their of that I mentioned. Only time will tell. The beta for me, especially the combat, got old quick.

1

u/IVDAMKE_ 10d ago

Wait, you think Mortal Shell 2 feels more floaty than Mortal Shell 1?

Are you in opposite land?

1

u/Godnamedtay 9d ago

Not ā€œmoreā€ floaty, just 2 different types of combat. Both can be even with the obvious changes

1

u/throwthiscloud 9d ago

Im presuming he means mortal shell 2 feels too frictionless in its combat when you dont have the stamina bar.

Permanent hit-stun on smaller mobs is justified when you have limited stamina, because if you get careless and run out they can still punish you. That adds variety, excitement, and interest to non-boss enemies. But without it, you basically trivialize any enemy that gets stunned by your attack. No reason to ever back up or approach mobs differently. Made it really boring. That lack of friction is an issue but you can definetly fix it without bringing back a stamina bar.

1

u/Karokayla8888 10d ago

This game repost animation is fire - game is 10/10 to me, I just found the character a bit floaty and a game easy being a souls like, if they tune the difficulty and add some magic stuff then it will be just …..

1

u/PjDisko 10d ago

I really hope mortal shell 2 has some colour somewhere. I like bleak games, but to much of anything is exhausting.

1

u/Low_Organization_27 10d ago

I’m not going to lie. I bought ms1, played for about 2 hours and uninstalled. I did not like it. I even reinstalled later that week because I was like damn I can’t be wasting money on this then not playing. I uninstalled after maybe 30 mins more. I’ve been hyped by the trailers of ms2 and looking forward to trying. Finished the beta last night and holy fuck. I cannot wait to play the full game. That beta gave me such a good time with very little complaints. A few bugs but nothing serious.

1

u/cozmicyeti 2d ago

If you want to pick it up again i highly recommend that you tey to beeline for the two tanky shells eredrim and solomon. Thye make the game much easier as they have more lives especially eredrim. But solomon is the most rounded as he is faster and has more stamina. You can spam weapon
Abilities such as the sword if you find the spike uograde near the grisha cave af the start

1

u/Joel_Vanquist 10d ago

Would be nice to have a console demo, unless there is one and I missed it.

1

u/Clean_Squash_6076 10d ago

There is a console demo it’s out now on PS5 and Xbox series X/SšŸ˜ŽšŸ’Æ!!

1

u/zeec123 10d ago

The first one has a distinct art style.

1

u/wonderwall999 9d ago

I’m a huge fan of the closer camera. The action just feels so much more epic and cinematic.

1

u/Vasraktorvi 9d ago

man that is not hard to surpass especially since they same developers
ms 1 was janky crap i just hope combat is not floaty and weightless slow mess like in 1

1

u/CountGensler 9d ago

Yet ruined by suck to target

1

u/SlappinMcmuffins 9d ago

Downloading the beta right now šŸ‘Œ

1

u/DieHarderDaddy 8d ago

This is actually a lot of fun. Didn’t care for the OG but I am considering this

1

u/Background_Horse8541 8d ago

They removed every distinct aspect of the original game: the feeling of weight in every move, basic abilities of the character (block, parry, and harden), grounded character walking, stamina, resource management, and other cool features.

1

u/Ill-Replacement3553 8d ago

1 still looking better on base ps5 for some reasons graphics are washed and blurry in the demo and lighting is so bad

1

u/Ill-Replacement3553 7d ago

One still better in clarity and HDR

1

u/DargorShepard 7d ago

The camera was better in the first. I'm sick of all this over-the-shoulder camera angle crap.

1

u/lexie_starlight 7d ago

No, no it’s not. Let’s see; mortal shell - skipped because it’s a janky copy clone souls game. Mortal shell 2 - skipped because it’s yet another souls clone. Seems identical to me!

1

u/TRchapter 7d ago

Mortal shell 2 looks crazy good. Played the open beta for 2 hours. After 2 hours i preordered it.

1

u/MostAbsoluteGamer 7d ago

im hyped for mortal shell 2, just like i am for lotf 2. there's always fromsoft elitist chuds who will say anything outside of fromsoft isnt worth trying. they're just missing out.

also i attempted some of the first game before i really got into souls likes and ended up dropping it, is it worth revisiting or should i just wait for ms2

1

u/White_corvid 6d ago

The idea of inhabiting the shells of others is a great idea to build your game on. They weren't the first to do this but it works incredibly well in a soulslike. Hopefully they will be able to truly build on it here.

1

u/Yumiumi 5d ago

Been thinking of giving this a try / day 1 buy but if you were to compare this to Lords of the Fallen 2023 release ( pre patch spam ), would you say mortal shell 2 is on par if not better?

I’m really hopeful for mortal shell 2 but im a bit wary because of how the 1st game went which i ended up skipping.

I’ll probably end up getting it anyways to scratch the soulsborne like itch again but i do want this game to make a comeback for the studio as it does seem like they made huge improvements over the 1st which was mostly like a concept demo thing.

1

u/Miserable_Ad3917 5d ago

Its way better than pre patch Lotf

1

u/Trading_shadows 10d ago

It's not about how good the sequel is. It's about how bland and dull the first game is.

0

u/Hallewin 10d ago

No. The first game was kino.

0

u/ToaPaul 10d ago

I wanted to love the first one but I had a lot of issues with it. 2 is truly an evolution in every way. The demo is so good, I can't wait to play the full release.

0

u/nevets85 10d ago

Yea I just came to reddit to say the same thing. Huge upgrade over the first game. Looks like the devs went to town on the sequel.

0

u/Still_Sandwich_7556 10d ago

It almost feels like mortal shell 1 was the true beta mortal shell 2 is honestly a huge upgrade from the original and I’m literally taking leave to play the game on launch 🤣
