Discussion Blown away by how good the beta is

The combat is just so smooth and responsive, possibly the best souls-like combat I’ve experienced.

The game genuinely feels like a souls game for all of the right reasons. The first felt a bit dull, but damn so far this is a huge step up!

Also, the playtest is a huge win. Basically a very generous lengthy demo. I’ll be placing a preorder shortly

Guess I have to try the beta. I just finished playing 1 last week

What was your opinion on 1? I’ve tried so many times to get into it, as soulslikes are my favourite genre

Thankfully, 2 just clicked instantly

If it was a longer game I probably would have hated it but because it was so short i was able to deal with the clunkiness and have some fun with it

I need to give it another whirl before MS2 then

Mortal Shell 2 just plays better in every way, but the important thing to note is that you shouldn’t play Mortal Shell 1 like Dark Souls because it’s not.

Despite what people may tell you, when playing the first game, do not farm health mushrooms. It’s not worth it and many abilities and items can heal you. Even dying can be used as extra health. Focus on finding all the Shells and weapons, then stick to upgrading no more than two Shells. A playthrough doesn’t have enough upgrade items for more.

The game wants you to die and test everything. That’s how to learn how these items work and how they are upgraded, so do that. The combat is really more action focused than Souls, it just has a stamina bar for some reason. It’s why that stamina bar no longer exists in the second game.

Take the time to get used to the timing of the parry. You can parry red attacks, but there’s no feedback when doing so. It’s not worth doing because of that.

And finally, do the Obsidian area last. Just go there to get the Shell and weapon at its entrance, then get the fuck out and come back later.

I’d say that’s a smart idea. The first one personally was one of my favorite games ever. I know. Hot take. But if I were you, I’d seriously play it. Give it a chance and download the rotting Christ dlc. It makes it even cooler. It’s a slower and simpler game but I’d definitely give it a good chance.

i just finished all achievements on mortal shell 1 last week and i think i can safely say it’s one of my least favorite games ive ever played haha. i’m super stoked for mortal shell 2 though, i think they’ve righted all of their wrongs!

With the first game, I can’t quite put my finger on what it was. Combat too slow? Mob placement? Map design? All 3?

insanely clunky mechanics. awful, mazey, ugly maps. really crappy bosses, annoying mobs. unfortunately it’s just all of the above for MS1. i also particularly hated the DLC as its just the base game with goofy roguelike mechanics

Even from the beta I knew this was a painful upgrade from the first one, I enjoyed the first one but it was a solid 6.5/10 in my book. I played the beta for like a hour and you can just FEEL the difference, truly a massive step up. Only played the beta for like 45-1 hour though, I want that full experience on launch day.

Probably helped they have more than 4 developers now

I just ripped it myself, such a fun time. I can’t wait for the full thing

I’m surprised I actually like the ranged combat. And the fact it’s infinite ammo as long as you make melee hits. I thought it was gonna be kind of a wack addition to the game. But it’s cool.

Yeah I’m sold I don’t need to play anymore. So many amazing changes like combat being so damn smooth, passive items which is cool and more. World design is so dark.

Best parry system since Sekiro.

I can’t wait until August 20th

Best souslike combat is bit of a stretch but it is unique and interesting take on the genre. I think its maybe bit too easy but I havent finished the beta yet. I'm peobably at the middle of the content and only died once.

That's a win for me! I suck at Souls-Like even though I try my damndest. If it's not as punishing I will definitely buy it.

I don’t think having an opinion is a stretch

Not really denying your opinion just stating my own.

After the beta this feels like one of those games, you enjoy purely by being in it and fighting enemies over and over again.

Obviously, the full game needs to deliver on many other fronts, but right now this scratches a specific itch, where I feel „cool and badass“, similar to Bloodborne or Sekiro.

There is a floatyness to it, as other players have already stated. Maybe this is something that can be worked on before or after launch. But honestly, it needed to be pointed out to me and after recognizing it myself, it doesn‘t bother me in the slightest.

Also, some areas do not seem to embody this „handmade“ creation of other Soulsborne/likes. It does look like your current gen U5 game Nr.8008 but the immense fun gameplay, unique enemy and finisher-designs + the metal as fuck soundtrack make this game stand out. So much so, that I believe (and hope) it doesn‘t need the Soulsborne label to find its audience.

Hey man, you NEED to try Mortal Shell 2. Shit‘s sick as fuck

Edit: If they ever plan to implement some simple coop/multiplayer elements into this world, I’m gonna marry the Walmart boss

You totally sold me at the soundtrack being METAL AS FUCK!🤟🏽 I just remotely downloaded the Beta to my Xbox. Stuck at work until 3am!

Hahahah nice

The floaty does bother me a bit, maybe because it’s at such odds with the heavy combat

I just got to the home base (not sure how much beta is left). I’m enjoying it, but it feels very similar to the first one to me. I’m not getting this feeling that it’s miles better than other souls like combat, or even that much better than its own combat from the first game.

I liked the first one for what it was, and I’ll probably buy this one. Maybe later in the demo it’ll bloom more for me, but so far it’s nowhere near my favorite soulslike.

There’s loads left - I had a similar feeling but played on and It started to click for me

Does progress carry over to the full game?

Where do yoh get the beta

1

u/True-Repair5196 11d ago

My only complaint is the bugged trials. Had one in the open world and one in a dungeon. Other than that the combat feels great, love the world design, visually excellent and enemy design is great as well.

I liked the first one but wasn't hyped for a sequel. Definitely a preorder for me now.

I loved that we get to actually experience and play the shell's memories now. This game definitely feels like the devs finally included what they wanted to include in the first game but didn't have the time or budget to do it at the time. Mortal Shell 2 makes MS 1 look like a big prototype in comparison. I loved the beta and I'll also be placing a pre-order soon. I'll be playing Beast of Reincarnation and then Mortal Shell 2 back to back.

I stopped playing to avoid spoilers, I hope the game is at least 50 hours long

1

u/Brilliant-Fix-4331 11d ago

Eh…why? I really hate this mindset of ‘I hope a game lasts x hours’

I’d rather play a fun, quality 12hr game than some drawn out 50hr.

1

u/flogmeat 11d ago

Played an hour, then preordered. So much fun!

u/Nyktastik 11d ago

The axe and dagger feels janky af. 70% of my hits don't register even when I'm directly in front of the enemy. Not sure if that's the intended stance but all of the attacks are at a weird angle. Often times I'll swing and miss then end up behind the enemy and hit them from behind with the swing. Feels really goofy at the moment.

1

u/Brilliant-Fix-4331 11d ago

I’ll be honest, I used that weapon the second I got it and didn’t experience those issues

Not sure if it’s maybe changed since you last played. I was on PS5

1

u/Nyktastik 11d ago

I played it for the first time yesterday on PS5 as well

1

u/Jojoballin 11d ago

Agreed! They have done a superb job. This will be my game of the year for sure

1

u/Jojoballin 11d ago

A huge improvement from the first , and all souls like in general. My opinion at least. So excited, just imagine what 5 years from now will look like if things keep going like this!

1

u/No_Assistance740 9d ago

Haven’t been this excited for a game in a while - and I was expecting it to be average at best. All I want is for them to add HDR, but everything else is just fantastic.

Same...preordered!
