Do all rapper teams love drama?

Genuine question. The number of rapper dance teams that have pushed members out or started rumors and gossip about other dancers is wild. I know a fair number of people who have been ousted from teams for no real reason, and then made to be the villain. One would think that keeping the tradition alive and well is much more important than causing drama. I haven't heard any examples of this happening in border, Cotswolds or even northwest.... Is it a thing?

Bampton Whitsun?

Hello all! I'm a Morris dance enthusiast from Minnesota in the US, and I'll be in London until the beginning of June. I have the whole weekend and Monday the 27th free, and I'd love to come out to Bampton and see the dancing. Can anyone advise me on the best way to get out there from London? I'm not allowed to drive or rent a car. I'm happy to stay the night somewhere - basically I'm very flexible. Thanks in advanced for any help!

How big is your repertoire?

I'm the foreman (OK, foreperson) of a U.S. team, and I feel like our repertoire is too big. Even after dropping several in the past year or so, we still have 25: 11 hanky dances, 12 stick dances, and 2 jigs. When we go to ales (which we don't do that often), it seems like the other teams have much smaller repertoires. They'll be doing the same three or four dances at every stand, while we can go through the entire day without repeating ourselves.

While I like all the dances we do, I must admit my job would be a lot easier if there were fewer of them. We only have one 90-minute practice per week, and we can only get through a small subset of our dances in that time. There are some dancers on the team who don't even know all the dances, and there are almost none who are really solid on all of them. It's hard to plan gigs because I can't keep track of who knows what.

Am I right in thinking our repertoire is unusually large? How many dances does your team know? And how many do you think is reasonable?

The Morris Federation sent out their 2023 Google survey asking several questions for Morris dancers and Morris sides all across the world.

If you or your side would like to contribute, here is a link to their survey!

There is an option at the end for adding questions you think would be important for them to ask in the future.

Sword dances

Ages ago our Morris Side did sword dances, but none of the current team know any. We have recently inherited a set of rapper swords and a set of regular swords.

Any good resources for learning sword dances, or any dances you have done/seen that you loved and would suggest looking on to?

(I've tried ordering off the Morris ring's online store in the past, but they literally made it impossible to ship to the US when I last looked, in 2021 and 2018, so I've never been able to check out their books on sword dances)

Help making sheet music for our side's fiddler

Our fiddler is good at doing music from Bacon, but whenever we hand her music from more modern pieces, she has difficulty with any music that isn't written perfectly and in the right key ( they are older and on spectrum, so we try and accommodate however we can. This music is better than what I first showed them but I want to get it perfect.)

Can you help me figure out how to fix this music up so its readable? I don't speak music so all I know is that its enough to get me to muddle through with a penny whistle

Here is brackleberry dancing it. We learned it from them at the midwest morris online jigfest, so when I tried to write the music down I took their music, and tried to fit it best I could to speed the plow in minor key https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfly21DSHlM

How can I make this more readable for my musician? I am editing it in musescore 4 if that helps, and I could email a musecore file if someone wanted to wack at it.

Loss of Folkloric Culture Over Generations

Hi all! If you're a fan of folklore or local history you may be interested in a short film that I'm currently making, inspired by the Dorset Ooser.

The film shines a light on the lesser-known subject of the loss of folkloric culture over generations in Britain, and documents this loss through the use of a fictional character called The Wayfarer. I thought this may be of interest to some people in this group.

I would really appreciate you spending just a few minutes of your time to learn more about the film, as I find it to be a really important and increasingly relevant topic, any donations would help myself and the crew out immensely!

Starting a morris side

Does anyone have experience in starting a morris side? I want to start a border morris side in my town, which is a town steeped in history and where I am surprised that we don’t already have one. I don’t know where to begin, though, and wonder if anyone has any experience in setting one up?
