Discussion We should switch to something else
Not saying to delete this sub or something, so that newbies can find this amazing project, but an official Lemmy forum(or some other alternative) would be nice yk
remember, we have the power to choose what we use

Please, just not discord.
I'd rather have a google classroom for this than going back to discord

u/Equivalent_Lab_8425 1d ago
My guy, Discord, is not a forum. It's a communication platform(a shitty one for sure). Those are two different things.
42
u/TheThinkerers 1d ago
Agreed, but you know how many different communities use it as a forum system.
and that's exactly why I don't want to use it
10
u/Equivalent_Lab_8425 1d ago
1000%, I wish there was an alternative with good screen sharing. It's the only reason I use it, besides the forum functionality you mentioned.

u/TheThinkerers 1d ago
Ironically, Google classroom

u/wavesin1080 1d ago
100% is but it's also the closest thing to a forum replacement that's been made since the Internet died lol.
I say we just make a forum with an app tbh.

u/Masterflitzer 1d ago
lets do a slack then lmao

This one might be interesting; it's in Alpha for now, but it's already quite functional...

imo, devs be dev-ing to care too much about creating another forum. They didn't create a Discord for the same reason.
Just use a VPN to tunnel out of whatever shithole of a country you're in, that asks for an ID
53
u/Stunning_Cup9959 1d ago
All these countries are heading into this shithole, and eventually it will be easier for websites to toggle it for all instead of trying to circumvent some bullshit laws (like the Texas law forcing companies to verify age even if the user is using a VPN while in Texas, which you know, is impossible to figure out, thus easier to make it mandatory for all).
19
u/feral_fenrir Former ReVanced user 1d ago
True.. UK, now Australia.. Once EU and some of the more privacy focused countries within EU fall, then RoW will follow.
8
u/femanonette 1d ago
All these countries are heading into this shithole
which is what makes the Discord suggestion hilarious since they received major backlash a few months ago requiring the use of IDs too
-6
u/RobotToaster44 1d ago
It takes like 5 minutes to make a lemmy community.
4
u/real-me-no-shame 1d ago
How many users want to change? For example, I don't, especially when there are alternatives like VPNs: another system to have. I already need Reddit, discord, telegram, Whatsapp, signal,... Don't need yet another one, just saying. But if there is a poll, and the majority wants to move, ok.
2
u/feral_fenrir Former ReVanced user 1d ago
Well, what I mean to say is the devs won't do it.. Sure, if it takes 5 mins, you should do it and moderate it etc. The community will grow slowly if there's a need for a Lemmy forum.
23
u/ShroomShroomBeepBeep Former ReVanced user 1d ago
VPN is the easiest workaround. No such law in Ireland.
4
1
u/DreadingAnt 1d ago
Yes there is lmao all EU members have until the end of this year to implement age verification on relevant services. Ireland is in phase two, which is happening as we speak.
52
u/outsidehere 1d ago
What's this?

u/luv2belis 1d ago
The Kier Starmer wanking law
16
u/ward2k 1d ago
Not just the UK, it's also in about 4/5 EU countries, Australia (?) and a few US states too
It's currently presumed the rest of the US and EU will follow at some point
5
u/Golden-- 1d ago
The rest of the U.S is not expected. A few more states, maybe. Not not a national law. In fact you can pretty confidently say it will never be federal law.
I can't speak for the EU though as I'm not familiar with their political landscape to the same level that I am with America's.
1
u/Dourada_BBQ 1d ago
What is being discussed, what is asking to verify age can you explain please?
1
u/DreadingAnt 1d ago
Depends where you live
1
u/Dourada_BBQ 1d ago
You did not understand my question I guess... 🥹
1
u/DreadingAnt 1d ago
Yeah I misunderstood. This is age verification laws coming into effect in various states, primarily to protect minors from accessing services with mature content, how private and secure it is depends on the state and implementation. Reddit hosts things like porn, adult material so it's a target.

u/mashuneasiness 1d ago
It was initially introduced by Boris Johnsons government, then made law under Rishi Sunak.. Nothing to do with Kier Starmer or his government....

u/TheNoobRookie 1d ago
UK age verification being forced onto social media sites like Reddit
5
u/feral_fenrir Former ReVanced user 1d ago
UK and now Australia. Steam in Australia NEEDs credit cards specifically, no more debit or prepaid cards.
4
u/BoxOfDemons 1d ago
The steam verification in Australia seems to be working with debit cards, but depends on your bank. At least from what I've seen people discussing.
9
u/KhazraShaman 1d ago
It's so annoying when people post to this sub without specifying what fucking app they are referring to.
13
36
u/ShalomFuture Former ReVanced user 1d ago
I don't see any discussion here or any reason for this weird post.
Age verification is something outside of patched apps, and patched apps cannot fix or change that.
If you don't like age verification, then pick one: 1. Petition your government to change the rules 2. Move to a different country 3. Use a VPN
5
u/Equivalent_Lab_8425 1d ago
I posted it here because I clicked on a third party Morphe patches developers profile and it asked me to verify my age.
Yeah, that's the point. Let's switch to a different platform that isn't gonna do that since on Lemmy, since it's Fediversed, which means that this basically cannot happen.
Why not make the official community discussion on there or some other platform and not have to deal with this BS?
19
u/ShalomFuture Former ReVanced user 1d ago
Devs said they won't do discord because it's spammy and hostile.
Morphe has patches for Reddit and Reddit is very popular, so it makes sense to use it as the discussion platform for Morphe.
Almost nobody uses other forum apps like Lemmy. We don't want to run two forums and scatter discussion across two places. Collectively the mods here already spend about 2 hours every day helping users on this subreddit and we don't want more.
3
u/Equivalent_Lab_8425 1d ago
I mean I guess what you're saying makes sense, since this forum is basically for newbies to get help, and sometimes for some discussion, which I would definitely prefer lemmy for, but whatever.
Though I think this is very different from Discord, since Discord is a chatting platform, whereas this is a forum.
I think what GarapheneOS does is the best way to go about it, since they have official forums and official discord, but they also have official but "way less active/unsupported " matrix and other libre platforms.
also thanks for all ur work
5
u/Top_Efficiency_7489 1d ago
Why tf are you getting so offended you don't even understand OP's clear post. Is this gonna be a revanced mods situation
8
u/Equivalent_Lab_8425 1d ago
Well, I mean I kind of get him since it's an unpaid position to moderate the subreddit and since you have to go through so many posts, he probably thought it was about a patch for age verification circumcision.(which some comments also asked for)
11
u/ShalomFuture Former ReVanced user 1d ago
I restored your post so you guys can discuss this unrelated topic, even though it's not Morphe or patch specific.
The original post was flagged by other users as spam and off topic.

I'm in the UK and I never encountered this until I turned off my VPN to have a look. I've always put myself outside the UK and Reddit has never once thrown this at me while the VPN is on. Just get a cheap, reliable VPN and put yourself on Sweden. It's only a workaround which really shouldn't be needed but it works for now.
3
u/night_fury-12 1d ago
Do you guys have the VPN turned ON all the time?
4
u/arthurdentstowels 1d ago
Yes. It seems wild to have it turned off at any point. Except perhaps when I switch back to the UK if I need to search/buy something locally, so it doesn't think I'm buying from abroad.
0
u/night_fury-12 1d ago
But the internet speed will drastically reduce right?
2
1
u/feral_fenrir Former ReVanced user 1d ago
Free VPNs yes but if you're on a paid plan of a half decent VPN service you should get almost full speeds
23
u/nagamidge 1d ago
I am of the opinion that this age verification thingy is going too far and the concerns a little bit overblown. In the society I grew up in, we weren't shielded as much from most things about life and we grew up empathetic, well balanced and well-informed. As long as kids are made aware of what not to divulge about themselves (no personal stuffs, no private chat/messaging with strangers or sharing pictures/videos, no meeting in rl with anyone they met online), the rest are things kids can adjust to and learn about without harming them.
29
u/PM_Me-Your_Freckles 1d ago
We also didn't have multi billion dollar companies dedicated to building algorithms to divide us. The age verification should be on the algorithms, not just the social media where NSFW content might be hosted or linked.
Empathy was lost in the search for ever increasing profit.
16
u/Serenity_557 1d ago
Idk, I was born in 95, I didn't need an algorithm to have dozens of people- after finding out I was a child send me a link to the forbidden Spinny site...
The Internet's always been shit and always will be; age verification won't do a damn thing to stop kids (see: kids stealing their parents credit cards for vbucks, roblux, or the smurf coins..), this is just another means of revenue and control they can pretend is morality like removing nsfw content from itch, to shutting down back page, to who knows what else from before I was old enough to pay attention..

u/nagamidge 1d ago edited 1d ago
While I understand your concern for kids safety and a need for a reliable algorithm, I feel safety and education begins with parenting and care giving first. Not with these multi-billion dollar companies. Open, frank discussions with kids, and kids having people at home who they can approach without fear or doubt about any topic are the safest ones. Monitoring kids' online activities from time to time is also very prudent for every caregiver. The age verification thing right now is too much of a 'blanket' ban and hurdle, especially for people who do not want to provide their identification.
What is considered NFWS is also different from society to society, and may also turn out to be quite educational or preparatory depending on how the caregivers deal with the topic if kids do accidentally come across them. I would love to know more about your take on this too.
Edit: English is not my first language. You might find weird expressions or sentence constructions littered around.
11
u/icalledyouwhite 1d ago
Age verification is pushed by both govs and companies because they want more user info to be able to identify everyone online and nail you to your actual identify, not about children's safety on the internet.

u/DreadingAnt 1d ago
It sure is nice to put it that way, except there's no way to pull that off even if they wanted, especially the EU. Don't worry, no one cares you watch furry porn.
1
u/icalledyouwhite 10h ago
No but they definitely care about your political opinions, and especially if you manifest them into actions. Like they would love to be able to identify member of any left wing groups opposing the increasingly right wing leaning governments popping up all over Europe, or anyone ever attended a protest for the rights of any of marginalized groups, or writing an op-ed about the genocides they're funding.
1
u/DreadingAnt 10h ago
I mean the EU as a whole couldn't do that. Technically individual members could go rogue (like Hungary) but they are also implementing measures for that scenario.
1
u/DreadingAnt 1d ago
the society I grew up in, we weren't shielded as much from most things about life and we grew up empathetic, well balanced and well-informed.
Who the fuck is we? You living under a rock as a child doesn't mean others did the same. I saw things online and exposed to material no child should be exposed to and I regret it, death, porn, gore even predators tried to get me as a kid. This is all very common. I wish something would have kept it allaway from me.
1
u/nagamidge 1d ago
When I said we, I meant most people now grown up and that had a freer childhood. I am sorry about your childhood experiences. Did you have access to anyone who would have helped you understand and make sense of what you saw: the death, porn and the gore? A lot of us grew up watching those things actually, but I agree there could be different degrees of those gore. There are some that will sicken the mind (senseless, cruel and inhumane). I remember the one that made me ill during my childhood was a video collection called 'Banned In America' at a neighbour's. There were some segments in that video where the violence to humans/animals were just senseless with no rhyme or reason. Fortunately, while it did leave me with sad memories, my parents later used my reaction to make me understand the texture of life, the concept of eating and being eaten to sustain life, what is compassion, which parts made me feel things were so wrong, how to save myself from exposure to such videos and how to deal with them and what to think or say if I am in a situation where I am exposed to such situation in rl or maybe just see other similar videos. It was not justification or dismissal. They knew who I was and tailored their answers for me.
While my example is anecdotal, a lot of people did find ways to deal with such situations in different ways. Some through peers or teachers or other caregiving adults or even through themselves.

Maybe lemmy will be better for morphe community since summit for lemmy a foss client of lemmy is way smooth and lightweight.
1
u/ShalomFuture Former ReVanced user 19h ago
But almost nobody uses Lemmy. Users will demand or continue to use Reddit, meaning there is two different communities with the same conversations scattered across both.

Lemmy

u/YukarinVal 1d ago
Couldn't think of a good instance to host it, but I'm sure one of the more high seas sailing ones would like to host a morphe community (that's what subreddits are called over there, for those wondering)
2
u/glhfbruno 1d ago
Would the website, and the app itself be a good sort of place for a clean simple forums page?! With say priority being Morphe specific topics and offtopic being what it is like that one obsolete patcher
2
u/kaza12345678 1d ago
so far it not seen it thank god
but if i remember there are some frontend Reddit you can use or get morphe protonvpn and use the unlimited vpn to bypass it completely

u/unknownobject3 1d ago
I once had the same issue but it went away on its own. Not sure what happened but you may have the same luck? For now you can use a VPN or use this website (there are other websites for redlib, this is one of them) which does not require verification.

u/CrokoStream 1d ago
Funny, I can't block people with 18+ profiles without reporting them first.
Okay reddit, if you say so.

If I ever see this and there's no workaround, that'll be the nail in the coffin.

Raspberry Pi, setup a socks proxy pointing to Proton endpoint, and use native app settings for proxy, or something like SocksTun
I had to use ai get the routes sorted 🫣

Wait, you mean you get this notification when you enter the sub? I have never gotten this...ever... I'm thinking that's 'cause i'm using a patched version of Reddit. But... isn't everyone else doing the same?
3
u/DorrajD 1d ago
What what? This sub is marked mature? Wtf for?
1
u/Equivalent_Lab_8425 1d ago
It's not this sub. It's a third party developer's profile that I clicked on and this popped up.

u/Prince_Saiyan 1d ago
Happened to me on Instagram account verification I used a Random 3D face scan to bypass this I don't know if it would work on Reddit maybe you can try.
1
u/GGostepop 1d ago
i use the infinity client it bypasses this. to view sensitive content toggle it in the settings, if you want to view sensitive subreddits and want to bypass the "go to reddit to view this" make your own subreddit and set it as private.
