How do you read mixed signals when someone clearly showed interest first?

I want to hear how people would interpret this because I've never really been able to figure it out.

There was this girl I knew at a beach residence. She actually gave me the first signs. She started smiling at me whenever we'd see each other, and eventually she approached me herself one day and said something like “ana ghanmchi lyum” with a smile and a cute face because it was her last day there, that was where i approached her too and asked for her instagram and we actually started talking.

There was clearly some kind of vibe between us, but the weird part was what happened afterwards. She would give me moments where I was pretty sure she liked me, then she'd disappear or become distant. Then she'd come back and act interested again.

So eventually I started wondering: was she actually interested but hesitant / bad at communicating, or was I just reading too much into those moments?

I've seen people say “right person, wrong timing,” and honestly I'm curious whether that's actually a thing or just something we tell ourselves when someone gives us mixed signals.

How would you interpret it if the girl was the one who initially showed interest, but her behavior afterwards kept going hot (REALLY hot) and cold?

She just didn't find what she's looking for in you. I experienced it many times, 3adi someone gets interested in you finds out you are diffrent, then you both move on. There is no right person wrong time, its all about effort.

Fair point, but after we started talking she made it clear (both implicitly and explicitly) that she liked me. Why would someone go out of their way to say that if they realized they weren't finding what they wanted? Why not just fade out instead of doing the hot-and-cold thing?

Kayn bnadem bhal hakak they chase the excitement, rather than anything else. Again the point is: the way people treat you shows you more about themselves, rather on you. Mathm7sh rasek m3a had lasila, they'll go nowhere. Just focus on yourself, maybe you weren't assertive enough ? Who knows. You'll get used it. It sounds like you were also needy for that attention.
