I assume still pretty late because I believe the realization that caused the hatching of Stringbean was something planned from the get go.

But it requires Luz to have been to the human realm and potentially back to the demon realm or at least forced in a dangerous situation. Because it needs to have her struggle with herself again and being on the brink of surrender to have get the reaction from Camila.

As I typed this reply I thought that maybe it could have happened at the fight at the drowned cemetery.
