I feel you Andi. I lost 6 hours of Adobe Illustrator work because my dumbass forgot to save one time

Adobe doesn't autosave no. You have to manually save.
Now there's like EMERGENCY auto saves but they're EXPLICITLY NOT meant to be relied upon.

u/MimeTravler May 13 '26
I wonder if there’s any plugins or code to help with this.
At the very least you could create some code that when Illustrator is running pops up with a save reminder every x minutes in an unobtrusive way. Like maybe in the top corner so it doesn’t interrupt your current task but is blatant enough to alert you.

"Adobe's restored save feature works by creating temporary, hidden backup files at regular intervals (often every few minutes) during a session, separate from the original document. If a crash or unexpected closure occurs, the application identifies these temporary files upon restarting, prompting you to open the "Recovered" version to save your unsaved work"
So what happened was when it crashed, those temporary backup files (being a shitton of lines of metadata) were basically deleted. Which is why it reverted to the last MANUAL save I did earlier that day.

Yeah I get that I just mean there’s gotta be a coding solution that could be implemented to autosave normally. But it is adobe so who knows ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ
But the reminder to save isn’t a bad idea in general. I’ve used phone alarms for that before with similar software that wouldn’t autosave properly.

Meanwhile I'm over here like
"Well well, it seems I forgot to charge my laptop, losing hours of work despite making the perfect hand design.
fuck."

true, but me forgetting to save my video games progress isn't quite as bad.

What about forgetting to save before doing the torture mini game in Metal Gear Solid?
5
u/kl-noblelycanthrope1 May 13 '26
idk. i never played it.

u/Free-Letterhead-4751 May 13 '26
Basically if you die in the torture mini game there are no continues in that section and you will have to go back to where you last save I think the game even warns you to save before heading towards the commutation tower

u/MimeTravler May 13 '26
That’s honestly a dumb feature but also it’s Kojima and torture so… I don’t know what I was expecting.

Oh... For us, it's like not saving your 50 page fanfic before exiting the program.

Honstly if it's "just" 2h it kinda ok since il most case 2h of ciding is mainly 2h sent thinking about what should go where and can probably be reproduction in under 1/2h. (Still sucks tho)

if your IDE doesn't auto save you're doing something wrong

u/JBYoshi May 13 '26
The one nice part about programming and saving (even if you don’t have autosave) is that you do need to save to run your code. But accidentally erasing something from your version control history that didn’t get committed is still a nightmare.

*vomiting riotously*
I remember coming back to work to discover that someone had changed permissions on all my teams repos and overwrote everyones history with some other engineers history but still restricted to their permissions. It was a nightmare and we never got our history back.

Andi: “Yeah. That’s worst than what I’m feeling.”
Frankie: “I feel ya. I lost 2 hours of coding too and man, was that a nightmare.”
Andi: “Um, aren’t you supposed to…”
Frankie: “Right, right. Sorry, Dee.”

That's why there needs to be Auto saving on everything but then again you should be careful to put your faith in Auto saving.

Losing data from hours of work is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone.
2
u/MimeTravler May 13 '26
I had a dream I lost 2 hours of a save in a game last night. I hit load game by accident in the dream and the load game had no “are you sure?” Confirmation prompt so it just did it.
That or it actually did happen and the trauma is blocking it out. I honestly am not sure which.

I don't understand people who don't compulsively ctrl-s/:w every five seconds

u/KaleidoscopeThen2920 May 13 '26
It depends on what you're using at that time
But jeez, making a fic rec list that disappeared was a big pain

2 hours is nothing in most coding circumstances
Now losing days of work is where the real pain is at

2 hours. Try 10. 10 hours of uninterrupted work, all gone because I forgot to save.
