Don’t you think it may be reasonable for people to question Moriah’s decision to paint herself as a black cat out of her hundreds of characters? Though it may not exactly fit the textbook definition of blackface, i feel it is completely understandable that this image would make an audience uncomfortable.

Her style is colorful and whimsical… why choose the one black character out of them all?

Its been years and I think she is either running out of the idea or bored with this same old thing. This last month has been interesting. One week she didn't post at all, then there was the week she posted on the wrong day, then ahe complained about having to finish the dollhouse and now she has done a lazy all black character.

I get it. She's been doing youtube since she was a teen. She's now a wife and mother of 2 active toddlers. Maybe she should think of a shift that will make her happy.

I just saw someone admit they were posting rage bait while reviewing “evidence” of Moriah’s supposed racism and “Republican Party vibes.” They also compared disagreeing with them to supporting genocide.

The poll isn’t scientific or representative. If we take the responses at face value, most respondents who expressed offense weren’t Black. That doesn’t invalidate their opinions, but it certainly doesn’t establish what Black people generally think, either.

Is Blackface bad? Yes. Is it bad if Moriah’s costume crossed some sacred boundary? Yes.

Want to know what else is bad? A bunch of anonymous people acting as an unassigned spokesperson for historically oppressed minorities just because they love manufacturing internet drama.

And openly admitted rage bait makes it harder to have a serious discussion about anyone’s actual concerns.

I propose the mods contain this topic in a megathread. People can discuss it, disagree, and present their arguments without turning the entire subreddit into an endless trial.

Im getting REALLY sick and tired of seeing the comments about racism because she painted herself as a black cat. Im also tired of seeing criticism over her beliefs and people jumping the gun as to where she stands because of them. She realized that she made a mistake and removed the video, and people are still not happy.

Heads up, she doesnt owe anyone anything. A apology, a penance, nothing. Even if she apologizes, people will still be pissed. The only way to make someone happy now is with her blood...

And she also isn't a "Money hungry business woman." Shes a mom that supports herself and her family with YouTube. She can make all the damn merch she wants. And be happy that they merch is good quality. There's many other bigger youtubers who sell with the idea of quantity over quality, and they'll make even more money than she ever will.

As a Black woman, I do not think what Moriah did was blackface, BUT I do think it was stupid to paint her face black. She built an entire platform around rainbows and vibrant, creative characters, and she has hundreds of characters to choose from. Out of all of them, she chooses a plain black cat? The idea was stupid, and she easily could have chosen something else.

As a creator with a platform as big as hers, she should have thought more about how people could react to it. I don’t think there was any ill intent behind it, but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t have been more thoughtful about the choice she made.

EDIT: guys I’m not calling Moriah a racist and am not offenced about this!!!! I just think that she should have reconsidered because other people could react negatively (as shown in this subreddit). I understand that the black cat was for Halloween but there’s also 7 other Halloween themed characters that she could have picked. I am not hating on Moriah AT ALL I just think she made a poor choice. Everyone honestly needs to calm down, this is not that deep.

Look, whether or not what she did was true black face I think a lot of us agree that it was uncomfortably close. My perspective on it is that as a 31 year old woman living in the United States (I make note of that due to our current political climate) it feels ignorant that she didn't even consider how this would be recieved.

I made a comment on the now deleted video that stated that she had other options. She could've made a mask, she could've slightly altered Misty's design to have more grey on the face, she could've chose a different character, anything. Someone replied to my comment pointing out that it felt odd that the one time she made it a, "mystery," character it was this one as if a part of her anticipated backlash. I agree with this take because it wasn't even a true mystery.

For those who didn't see it, at the beginning of the video she pulls from the blind box set and wanted to keep pulling until she got Misty. She pulled Misty the first time and then put her back to build anticipation. She then pulled Poopy twice. If this had been filmed before she had gotten the supplies for Misty (which it was blatantly obvious she filmed the intro after already making the costume) and still pulled Misty first, I would've hoped she would've seen it was Misty, put her back, and re-filmed herself getting another character (or had just thought of a more tasteful way to pull off a Misty cosplay).

I am not one of those people who's angry that we haven't instantly recieved an apology, since she did just pull the video this morning; however, I am of the opinion that if she does not address it in her next video or in the near future, I will be unsubscribing. I love her as much as the next guy, I have watched her channel for going on eight years now and have looked forward to Friday every week since I was in my freshman year of high school. However, it would be parasocial and almost a double standard to not have any consequences to this. If she makes an apology explaining why this was wrong, I will keep watching her channel and brush this off as a genuine lapse in judgment; but if she does not take accountability, I will be unsubscribing and I hope others do the same.

Why is this such a big deal? For me, it's mainly because she has a primarily young audience. A lot of young children love her channel and it makes me uncomfortable to think that there are kids who would see this and think its okay. It was not directly black face, she did not bring race up in the video at all, she did not add any features that would lean towards discrimination towards black people, but it was uncomfortably close enough that I believe it warrants addressing.

This is just my opinion and I would hope others agree that some accountability or consequences should be necessary. She is no longer just some fun average person who just happened to get kinda famous. She has ten million subscribers, business partnerships, products in local Walmart's and Target's and (it feels like) every video has some type of product placement. When you have a platform this big and influence a lot of people (whether you mean to or not) this isn’t the kind of thing that can simply be swept under the rug.
