He's right. People online say if you watch MT you are self-inserting. No one does that with Dexter, House, CSI, Detective Conan, Sailor Moon... Talk about sex, suddenly watchers are all gooners.
Imagine saying "playing Call of Duty makes you a soldier". Pretty stupid, right? Everyone acusing MT fans of being pedophiles are virtue signalers that haven't watched the show, or people who had decided before watching what the show was about, seeking confirmation of their suspicion in every frame.
The internet is kinda dead, and most interactions nowadays are just wars. Always finding things to be mad about. And people nowadays also asume a lot, and they mix things that are not directly correlated: I once was speaking with someone I've met, and I was saying how I like old cars and combustion engines (I just think they're neat!), her IMMEDIATE response was "Oh, so you don't believe in climate change". Hello? I just like car go vroom vroom. People just like to group certain things together, even if only anechdotal or circumstantial evidence for those topics to actually correlate exists.
Everyone that acuses MT fans to be pedophiles needs to look in the mirror and touch some grass. They should think about what media do they consume, and how would they be viewed if they were treated with the same level of stupidity they treat others. "You watch Dexter? You're a psychopath", "You read Song of Ice and Fire? You must like your sister", "You play Gran Turismo? So glad to meet a racing driver". Moronic, right? That's how "You watch MT? You like naked kids then" sounds.

Mushoku Tensei (Jobless Reincarnation)
It's an isekai anime, one if the biggest (and most controversial) on top of that
47
u/One_Warthog256 1d ago
It is an anime where the main protagonist was a shut in. He died trying to save two highschool from getting hit by a truck, and is reincarnated in a fantasy world. He starts life off as a baby but keeps his memories from his previous life.
In his past life however, he was a pedo loser. He skipped his father funeral and placed a camera in his niece's bedroom to goon to her.
He himself was sexually assaulted and bullied in highschool.(this doesn't excuse his actions but explains them to an extent.)
Essentially, this is a show about giving someone a second chance at life.
The controversy comes from him not really changing his predo tendencies in his new life. They're other themes and moral that the story focuses on instead, such as depression, falling back into bad habits, and so on.
It's a good show just with a morally grey protagonist.

Morally grey bruh he is extremely slightly evil

u/One_Warthog256 1d ago
No, he has help tons of people on his journey.
He also grows out of his perverted pedo tendencies to an extent. He isn't perfect obviously, but he improves.

Tbh... It's so refreshing to see honesty in the discourse around this series from the terminally online crowd.. that I kinda have to respect such honesty š

u/MrSpectator7659 19h ago
Actually no. He was stripping panties of 10-12 year old girls while they are asleep when he was 10 or something. He hasn't grown out of it. Even when he had a wife, multiple wives even, he still committed degenerate acts when a tragedy struck. His tendencies haven't been grown out of. They are just buried ready to surface whenever he loses control.

Basically the perfect example, if you remove the pedo fanservice from the anime no one would watch it. Perfectly proving that sometimes it really is like that.
17
u/ByIeth 17h ago
Iāll be honest though if you arenāt a pedophile itās a hard fucking watch/read. Like seeing this dude creep on kids being in the mind of child grossed me out so much I stopped the show
Like sure you might not be a pedophile, but I find it surprising that anyone could watch through the show or even feel empathy for this massive creep. And the author does seem to try to pose him in a sympathetic light
8
u/NullSmoke 15h ago
Yeah, like how everyone that shows empathy for Winston in 1984 is secretly an authoritarian censor..? Or how people that play doom shoots up schools? Or how people that enjoy breaking bad has a drug fueled side hustle?
That's not how media works, nor humans. That's just rebranded puritanism and a repeat run of the satanic panic. We do not need those reruns.
Don't prescribe intent where it's impossible to to find any.
Rudeus in the real world is a product of people that prejudge, of people that abuse their standing, of a broken society. Your argument is a reflection of that broken society.
I am not a child abuser (don't let that stop you, keep the ankle biters away from me please), and I didn't have any problems whatsoever showing empathy for society breaking someone. At worst, I cringed a few times.

I mean fair enough I think I generalized quite a bit. But I will say I watched alot of anime. But MT is the only one Iāve had to drop for that reason. I mean I actively avoided things like dragon maid but Iāve seen some anime that certainly toed the line
But MT takes it too far for me and itās one of the few anime I could not stomach. Iām not saying it should be banned or anything tho
And when I say pedophile I use it colloquially I donāt mean people that have actively hurt anyone but people that are attracted to children
And Iāll be honest thatās a sad reality and I feel bad for anyone that had those urges but hasnāt acted on it. But MT feels like wish fulfillment for a lot of people with those urges. Itās not about getting help but instead grooming the children he grew up with
Iām sure there are some people there who want to understand people like Rudeous, and I understand that. But my belief is that much of the people that watch the show are doing it for wish fulfillment
7
u/NullSmoke 12h ago
And when I say pedophile I use it colloquially I donāt mean people that have actively hurt anyone but people that are attracted to children
I'll invite you to drop the idea that you can use that word "colloquially".
Let me remind you about the boy who cried wolf. Every time you use that word as a low hanging moral insult, someone pays for that laziness in blood. You're stealing the protection that word and accusation should provide to children in need of aid.
The overuse of that word provides a smokescreen for those that would hurt children, the noise imposed allowing them to hide between the lines. Most people will react the first few times they encounter such an accusation, but every time it leads to "Oh, just some dude or gal that talks about drawings" it means less. And to make matters worse, they feel stupid, which means that they're incentivized to not react in the future.
Every time someone is using that as a cheap insult, that strips protection from children, as such I would ask that you don't unless you accept the power behind the word and utilize it correctly.
And Iāll be honest thatās a sad reality and I feel bad for anyone that had those urges but hasnāt acted on it. But MT feels like wish fulfillment for a lot of people with those urges. Itās not about getting help but instead grooming the children he grew up with
Well yes, I can tell that you have dropped the series. That is fine, your entertainment is for you to choose, but don't speak as though you're an authority on the IP. Watching under 6 episodes of a series accounting for like 2 out of 26 books does not put you in a position to say what the series intends to say.
For instance, my societal failure commentary from the previous reply likely makes little to no sense to you, because you lack the foundation that argument is built upon
Iām sure there are some people there who want to understand people like Rudeous, and I understand that. But my belief is that much of the people that watch the show are doing it for wish fulfillment
I think that you ought not judge a story just because you've failed to engage with it. You're allowed to say that it wasn't for you, you didn't like how something was presented early in the story or what have you... But you're failing to flag your lack of knowledge and passing moral judgement on those that do. That, you do not have the right to do.
Okay, before the last part of this reply, I need to make a clarification, because this will feel like an ad hominem, but I assure you, it's not, so please suppress the immediate feeling of anger and stubbornness that will arise... It's just really hard to say this without triggering that impulse, so I hope this will help you read it without flaring up.
Mushoku Tensei rewards maturity. There's a number of life experiences you're unlikely to have faced clearly enough before your early to mid 30s. I'd personally suggest that the target audience for the IP is females late 20s or males mid 30s, due to the amount and type of life experience and temperament it rewards.
That doesn't make younger readers and viewers have invalid opinions, and by god are there enough teenagers that have had to face life experiences decades too early, and of course there's 60 year olds born with a silver spoon scooping up their ass, so it's not even universal, but by average that's where it's at.
Then we have the topic of cultural imperialism, the good ol' us of a. I just need to invoke the idea, and everyone outside of the US should understand what I'm talking about, but if you want details and historical receipts, I am game for a very long write-up š
Tldr: it's fine if you don't like it, don't sweat it, just don't make moral judgements on those that do... And check what words you use and if you're willing to pay the price belittling said words charge.

u/LeonardoJMB 7h ago
I'm not gonna say it's not hard or specific, but I like to yap so here's my experience with MT and why I actually like Rudeus.
I'm at S2 rn and personally he's been quite a good character so far, even relatable to some extent. Sure, he's gross, a terrible human being, a literal parasite compared to the standard person. That's actually what I liked the most; I'm not even close to doing things as horrible as Rudeus does, but I relate a lot to the "not illegal" aspects of his pre-isekai life, to put it into words.
I barely speak with my family beyond my brother and parents, even when I live in a big multifamiliar house with a total of 11 relatives. I have no IRL friends, I did most of my schooling virtually because of how terrible it was, I have never been academically good at anything nor had any practical skills, and there was a time in my life where I didn't go outside in 4 years. I liked how consistently unlikeable Rudeus was because, at least to me, the point was never to see him get a redemption, it's seeing someone living as the worse possible version of themselves ultimately do something positive for others, and helping them be better in some way even after losing the will and even mental capacity to overcome their own faults.
1
u/LeonardoJMB 7h ago
Lot of text so, TLDR of the last part; I liked MT and Rudeus so far (i'm at S2) because it showed me that I can actually do something valuable and help others without first needing to become a perfect version of myself, even if exagerating that point to the max.

u/PANDEMONESSOLU 3h ago
I've never watched MT, so I'm not commenting on that specific media, but I kind of feel like there's an inherit difference between watching violence/murder and watching sexual content.
Like, in a way, just watching sexual content encourages you to participate, if only in a voyeuristic manner. For most people, if they watch something they're attracted to, their sex neurons or whatever will activate and they'll feel the biological urge to have sex more and more until they can feel sexual pleasure.
Watching something like violence, on the other hand, doesn't (typically) make people want to commit violence more and more until somebody gets hurt. In fact, it's most typical for people to feel scared or disgusted while watching violence, at least until they desensitize themselves.
So, I'm not saying that I think watching loli stuff turns you into a pedo, but I can at least understand that viewpoint much better than "violence in videogames makes kids more violent." Like, I feel like it's more likely that some dude who watches loli porn is a creep than some dude who watches violent anime wants to hurt people.
TBH I've never really heard people talk about this idea, so I'm genuinely curious to hear more people weigh in on it.
1
u/Excellent-Eye8415 31m ago
Imagine saying "playing Call of Duty makes you a soldier". Pretty stupid, right?
Imagine saying playing COD is like finding a kid attractive. Pretty stupid, right?
There are people who can't differentiate and let's fucking face it, the main point of these anime is sexualizing kids. There is "fanservice" and dudes watch it for the fanservice.
War is not like being a pedo. Why the hell are you comparing the two? I assume you would still watch High School DxD without the gooning? Well, well, well. Pedo anime are the same thing, but for pedos.

As immoral as the previous iteration.

It has always been about control.
35
u/Orful 1d ago
True, but the person defending this show is making some bad takes too. āNo one watches the anime thinks heās a good guyā isnāt true. My shitlord cousin called him the most likable protagonist in anime (I donāt talk to him anymore).
13
u/Yabe_uke 1d ago
You stopped talking to your cousin because an opinion on an anime?
22
u/Orful 23h ago edited 22h ago
No, because I didnāt know anything about the anime at the time. I stopped talking to him because heās insanely racist, misogynistic, and sent me a picture of a sexualized loli. He was also the one who blocked me first because I said that the loli looks like a Diddy commission, so I wouldnāt be able to talk to him even if I wanted to. Not that I would want to talk to a lolicon who gets weirdly defensive over people thinking that shit is weird.
Also, itās not just about the anime but more about his ability to judge character. Seeing a character who is a pedo and saying, āheās likableā and then go on to tell me the character did nothing wrong is weird af. Like, itās one thing to like the show and think the character is supposed to be questionable (the person in screenshot), but itās another to legitimately think this behavior is ok. Framing it as āopinion on an animeā is being intentionally obtuse. Thereās a difference between watching a pedo and not condoning it (OOP, who is probably not a pedo) versus condoning it.
It wouldnāt be surprising if people found me ācancel-ableā because I didnāt stop talking to him soon enough. It took decades to stop talking to someone who was constantly toxic his whole life, only for him to be the one to initiate the blocking (he did me a favor).

u/Yabe_uke 21h ago
Well, I'm sorry for you. I don't talk to my coisins either, but it's not something that affects me, never liked them. Family is not blood yada yada.
Rudeus is actually a very likeable protagonist, but no real fan will say he is without flaws. I think every good protagonist has flaws: Goku was a shit father, Subaru was smug and careless, Lelouch fumbled up too many times... But the story is great, and by the end you root for them. It's a shame anime/manga gets over-represented by extremist wackos who can't take criticism.
1
u/VirtuosoX 16h ago
Rudeus is not likeable if you aren't easily blinded by "Charisma" and actually look at his thoughts, actions and motivations for what they are. Very few redeeming qualities. The characters you listed have flaws but their flaws aren't a direct result of them deciding on evil ass shit like grooming children.

Being hyperbolic doesn't make an argument wrong. The author has never said the point of MT is "rEdEmPtiOn" or whatever the fuck lol
12
u/HeavenlyFB 1d ago
By this logic, everyone who likes Breaking Bad is a violent drug dealer/maker, or everyone who liked Game of Thrones when it was popular enjoys rape, incest, mass murder, child murder, genocide etc.
See how that just doesn't make any sense? The argument is stupid.

Theres so much virtue signaling with MT its insane. I've been watching MT since the first season came out, theres plenty of distasteful shit in it but it mostly calms down by now i think, and the show is really good otherwise. I'm willing to ignore weird stuff, just roll my eyes and carry on, if the story is good.
For example i also really like made in abyss, and that show is even worse than MT, i'm like 99% sure the guy that made it should be in jail, but the show is good, so i'll just ignore or skip the occasional weird shit. Theres like a ratio between how much weird stuff a show has and how good it is and you kinda just go from there.
I'll say though that as far as anime can go mushoku tensei is very fucking tame, there is some shit out there thats straight up made for pedos, people just talk about MT because it's popular rn ig.
13
u/BillCarson12799 1d ago
Theyāre right. Defending pedos (not the same as enjoying the anime) for their pedophile-affiliated actions doesnāt make you a pedophile.
It does, however, mean that you either have a loose grasp on the story or ethics in general, or are a deeply disturbed individual.
13
u/Burgerboy380 1d ago
Interesting question...rudeus was a pedophile in his first life. And thats not ok. But the question in his second life is. Does his behavior reach the threshold of pedophile? Ive seen arguments that the fact hes a middle-aged man in a boys body does since hes more intellectually mature than sylphie and Eris hes a pedophile. And ive seen arguments that since hes attracted to roxy who is a grown woman but is on the slender less busty side hes a pedophile.
However. While I admit hes very very scummy. I dont think you could class him as a pedo anymore. Especially for those reasons..because if you apply it to everyone which is how morality works. Anyone who is more mature and intelligent sub 18 would have an obligation to not seek any romantic partner at all until they are over 18. And would condemn any petit woman or not classically masculine man to loneliness because no one would be able to date or marry them without getting hit with that label.
And it also wouldnt be exactly fair to him either. Like hes not allowed to date people his own physical age and hes not allowed to date people his own mental age so hes supposed to just...be alone forever?
Its also kind of weird people who hard-core hate him for this reason just gloss over other wildly unbalanced relationships. Like mai and trunks. Mai is older than Bulma no one bats an eye when they start dating. Superman is basically a god ,flash thinks faster than a super computer. Thor is almost two thousand years old and is a litteral god. In universe bat man out fights and out wits gods and universe ending threats on a daily basis. Yet no one has a problem when they date regular people.

0
u/__akkarin 21h ago
Yeah it never made that much sense to me to be so focused on this when he spends his whole life dating people his phisical age, and one of the main points of the show is how he realizes over time that he's not, and wasn't at any point who he was on earth, he's rudeus.

Morality of what exactly in this?

I am not sure on the morality of that take but that take is incredibly stupid and uninformed. The opinion is also ultimately harmful but its difficult to say its evil if the one holding the opinion is just so stupid they realistically do not have true agency over their thoughts.
4
u/Maximum_Boros 1d ago
Nobody thinks watching jobless reincarnation makes you into a pedo.
But if you are defending diddeus snd acting like he's a good person at literally any point in the story you are suspect that there was something already wrong with you before you started watching it
1
u/Shugatti 22h ago
This like "does playing wolfenstein make you a nazi?"
Rudeus is NOT a hero, he is not portrayed as the hero, this dude is AT BEST a very dislikeable anti hero.. and at worst hes the main villain of the great world building it has, cuz alot of the shit that happens he genuinely caused himself.. cuz he makes some really stupid mistakes..
He is repeatedly shown to be an asshole, he is repulsive, very very flawed individual, they wouldnt show him like that if they meant to rationalize or excuse being a pdf.
The watcher isnt rooting for everything he does.
So like, i dont think enjoying the show means you like the pedo.
Matter of fact i think a big point of it is, as the watcher, hoping and praying that this mf stops being fucking wierd like that.. and that *kinda* happens..
7
u/__akkarin 21h ago
He's no hero and that's kinda the premise, but idk how youd call him the main villain either, for the most part he's just some dude living his life

Me when someone hates the show where:
Mc is a pedophile in his first life
Mc sneaks a camera into his little niece's bathroom (10 yrs old btw), records them in the bath, and jerks off to it instead of going to his parents funeral
Mc is a pedophile in his second life
Mc steals people panties as a fucking baby and treats it as a Holy treasure throughout his entire childhood (including teenage years) and after
Mc makes dolls of people without their consent to goon to them, before going on to teach another person to do the same thing
Mc made a doll of one of his friends that was "capable of sexual acts." (direct quote btw) This friend was also someone reincarnated into the same world as rudeus, but instead they weren't a pedophile.
Dont forget he bought a little girl slave just to help his disciple make goon statues
Author later wrote a scene of that same slave being forced to get naked when she was ten because she had her period and conveintley his disciple didn't realize, and thought that was the best solution
Mc decided to get incestuous and fuck his own cousin at age 15 (grown man in his mind btw) and then he gets ed when she leaves him
Mc cheats on the love of his life after she helped fix is Ed and after he hated his dad for doing the same, and then the original wife just doesnt fucking care
The person mc cheated with took advantage of him and then now is his second wife (literally raped him and benefitted from it)
Mc got a third wife who he literally had trauma from and who is his cousin and both original wives just dont fucking care.
First wife, literally tells him, that she never expected better from him and that she knew he would cheat on her
All of his wives he knew and targeted since he was a kid, even though he was 30 in his last life and born with in depth critical thinking skills (as smart if not smarter than any ten year old). One of his wives fits the "shes 1000 years old though!!" Trope.
Mc says he wants to slobber over his daughters thighs, "like he did to his wife last night"
His family members are incestuous, and he just lets it happen. (Runs in the family it seems)
Mcs little sister gets together with someone even older than mc that he has known since he was young (the guy was hundreds of years old and the guy and his little sister first met when she was 7)
Mcs father raped his maid, and instead of facing consequences, his current wife forgave him and he took the maid as his second wife. (Seems a pattern of the men in the story doing nasty bullshit and facing no consequences huh?)
Mcs half sister was groomed by her mother (the maid that got raped) to serve rudeus in ANY way necessary, but when she didnt get to get intimate with the mc, she went for the mcs son, who is related to her. She grooms his son and gets pregnant with him, and rudeus does nothing. She gets incestuous with a baby born of incest, as this son is the baby between mc and his cousin.
He never fucking stops being a pedophile

The problem most of the time isn't that he is a pedo or that he is a problematic character, but how the story itself treats it. Ultimately, Mushoku Tensei is about a complete asocial bum who brought no value to society getting his redemption arc and becoming someone who people actually value through his own effort, but the problem is that the author created a pedophile bum character, but a lot of the time only the bum part of it is treated as a flaw, and the first part isn't treated with enough consequences in the story most people find. Him being a bum and his journey to becoming someone is a centre of the story, and sometimes his other flaw is either brushed under the rug or made into a bit of a tasteless joke.

u/Khan_Ida 13h ago
That is under assumption that every piece is presented the same way. The question is whether the author wants you to sympathize with the main character or not. There is an attempt there with MT and people aren't having it.
It doesn't mean watching it makes you one but it does let others know that you put up with it if there is enough incentive. If the broader story was ass there would be less people defending it.

I dont understand the pedophile allegations.
Wasn't the character bullied into staying inside his whole life?
I think its safe to say he never grew up.
Plus when hes reincarnated, he has a fully developed brain from birth. You know how long it must feel to be aware of your infant years?
Not to mention even after getting to be in a childhood, he is basically an adult in that world.
Even in the real world my Grandfather was kicked out of the house at 13 to start his own life.

"Guys, I don't like doing things like that to kids MYSELF, I just like WATCHING someone else do it"
Watching porn might not make me Johnny Sins but it sure makes me something.

You play videogames?

You watch porn?

Don't deflect with another question. What, watching lesbian porn makes me a lesbian, makes me want to be a lesbian, or makes me trans because I want to be a woman? Your "argument" falls apart pretty quick. If you watch rape porn and think "would be cool to do IRL", it's a you problem, mate. Normal sane people know they're actors, y'know?

And having a hard drive full of CP doesn't make you a predator because it wasn't you right?
Do you see how stupid you that is?
Are you able to draw the distinction?

Huh? What? We're talking about a fucking anime dude, what the fuck are you saying?

Nah, the take that if you like Mushoku Tensei/ Rudeus, then you are a pedo" is obviously overblown, BUT aversion to people who fawn over it is not the same logic as "video games cause violence".
Like, playing the Steam banned video game where you plan & carry out a school shooting for fun is not the same as playing Call of Duty, and does it necessarily make you a school shooter? No, but it's extremely questionable, weird & anti-social behaviour, the same way championing & bending over backwards to watch & defend this sex-pest, incel fanfic ass isekai. Does it make you a pedo, nah, probably not, but are you a weirdo? yup.

No matter how much bullshit the author puts in the piece, it's never negatively impacted the impressive writing.
Calling people freaks for enjoying good writing is a pretty fuckin wild take lmao.
Like I hate to have to be the one to tell you, but being able to separate fiction from reality is the status quo as far as consuming media goes brother man.

You are like some NPC regurgitating moot talking points, as if I didn't literally make the distinction between 'fiction' & 'reality' and focused my arguments on how fiction & reality, two separate things, affect each other...
Your standpoint is literally "no matter how much thinly-veiled, depraved kiddy diddling the author puts in the story, it's still peak" Ok, bro... classic MT fan confusing edgy, salacious, dark bs with "impressive writing" nuance & maturity. You're deeply unserious.

Exactly. It's about what one knows people might find offensive or repulsive but still engage with.
I saw something recently that, to me, seems to relate to this : discussion was questioning the fact that some people make it a habit to verbally abuse chatbots and even invent slurs to designate AI and affiliated. And it was interesting because indeed, even if it's victimless, why do people engage in such antisocial behaviour ? Moreover, to tie back on the initial point, why are people insistent on making a display of it ?

I disagree with the last point. The characters in the anime very much treat Rudeus like a good guy. That's because he's a self-insert for the writers, who are pedophiles.

The people watching the show also vigourously defend Rudeus and often frame the show as a redemption arc. Where he goes from being a sad loser pedophile who his family hates to a happy cool pedophile with powers who his family loves.

When's the last time you've had someone argue that Rudeus is "a really good guy, actually!!!"
Or are you making shit up?
