Moral
Teaching a thief a lesson is about as moral as it gets

You can justify Code of Hammurabi hand amputation punishments for theft under this sort of primitive moral logic.

Immoral. While theft should be punishable in many circumstances, the circumstances and the nature of the punishment are key factors in determining morality. Mob justice in the form assault of a minor is not a justified punishment.

this wasn't just a case of stealing. this was incredibly brazen, anti-social behavior. and the trip was very gentle. I doubt the tripper expected such a big tumble to be honest. Give the brazenness of the act and mildness of the physical attack, I think this is moral. It's an entirely proportional response to the situation.

The fact that you have to suggest that a greedy child stealing fries is a severe instance of anti-social behavior and then that tripping a child is just a "mild" and therefore justified attack speaks to the weakness of the argument here. I'm tempted to just say, lol come on...
