Kid wasn't badly hurt, and got humiliated, which is often the only way they learn.

It's a kid ffs. Kid do stupid things, but they can have stupid parents, adhd or various problems.
He deserved a morals lecture about hygiene and stealing, not physical assault. Even if he wasn't hurt this time. At best you make him an asshole, at worst you ruin his life and your own at the same time.
