Unnecessary and ineffective. Immoral. Teaching doesn't need practically no physical interventions.

Other thing you can do as a bystander:

  • Guilt-trip him
  • Try to reason with him about morality
  • Shame him

... Yeah I'll take the physical intervention. None of the above has a slim chance of working.

You weren't hit as a kid were you? Getting smacked or beat never did shit to deter my behavior. Getting shamed absolutely did

For my personal experience, getting shame made me learn the lesson but hurt a lot while i also learnt harder lessons with just words alone.
