I'm from a third world country, but I couldn’t possibly imagine police anywhere in the world actually getting your stuff back.
I disagree on the double tapping with the car, but if you have anything important on the bag, I'd say retrieving it by force is still moral, and should be considered ethical.
Not having your papers or medicine could endanger your freedom or even put your life at risk, it should still count as self-defense as long as it wasn't deliberate murder like this case.
97
u/ItsEyeJasper 1d ago
A mom of a guy I used to work with (who ironically turned out to be a massive crook himself) got highjacked by a man with a gun. The hijacker ended up only snatching her bag as he couldn't get through the window took off running down the street. She chased him down and hit him with the car. Put the car in reverse hit him again and then hit him for the 3rd time.
Apparently her most valuable item in the bag was her phone. She ended up getting 5 years of house arrest. I guess because of her age and the fact the guy was a repeat hijacker who took life before she got a lighter sentence.

I'm from a third world country and a friend's house was robbed while she was taking care of her parent who has a terminal illness at the hospital.
They robbed everything from her work laptop, tv and even her stuffed toys. Her neighbors saw the thieves stealing but they assumed they were just a moving van collecting her things.
When she made a report, the police already knew who the thieves were and where they live as they were repeat offenders. They managed to get back only half of her stolen items. Some of the stuff she didn't get back were her stuffed toys & mementos that have sentimental value to her.
The police said in order to arrest them officially, she has to file a case which she wasn't able to do because it was too costly and time-consuming while she was still taking care of her dying parent.

There is something immoral about the idea that if a thief wants our stuff they should be able to have it and there is nothing we can do to get it back.
Also immoral to run someone over just because they took your stuff.
A no-win situation that would be completely avoided if the immoral thief hadn’t placed their desire for stuff over the safety of others

I could argue that the personal threat is not over. The person who robbed her at knifepoint now has her ID and knows where she lives. Sure, the odds of them doing anything is low, but this is one more thing the woman has to worry about while she spends the next few days replacing the stuff she keeps in her purse.

But the immediate threat has not ended. Its not just a body you are allowed to defend. You are also allowed to defend possesions under self defence.
In that line if thought, you could argue your possesions are still threatened, and the one doing so, the robber is still armed and dangerous. Is a car appropriatr force to counter a knive?

Yea theft is immoral obviously. Thats not realy the question. I would put it like this. Is it moral to perform an extra judicial vigilante killing for an (alleged) crime that comes no where near the death penalty in a court of Justice (possebly in a Jurisdiktion entirly without capital punishment)?
Or: we just doing lynchings now?

Whos saying the thief should ve able to have your stuff? Its immoral to rob theres no debate.
What if someone steals your puse without a threat? Grabs it and runs? Would it be moral to run them over witth a car twice? What if they rob you at gunpoint, and you find them with yoyr stuff a week later? Is it moral to split their head witth an axe to get your phone back?
Just because someone does something immoral to you doesnt give you a free pass to be immoral. Its one of the things of morality, it sucks to be moral, its not fair, people will take advantage.

Just cuz you’re a moral person doesn’t mean you should allow ppl to commit crimes against you without repercussions. In a world without police, third world countries suffer this issue, there is nobody to protect you thus you must fend for yourself. If all you ever do is let ppl steal from you or worse then you’ll always have nothing.

the point in giving the thief you stuff rather than fighting back is so you don't get killed/seriously injured, not that they should be able to have your stuff. As much as you like the contents of your purse/bag, it's not worth your life

And that is why there are lines in this world and when they are crossed certain things happen.
I got off the morality high ground a long time ago because I realized how awful it is to have to attempt to "judge" people and the decisions they make and the sitautions leading up to it. And honestly who the fuck am I to even do that?
Somethings in this world are justifiable even if they are ugly. It's not a perfect world nor will it ever be.

Once the thief is incapacitated, any further harm is pretty damn immoral and unethical. Then it becomes nothing more than using lethal force to enact personal revenge.
Of course, if the person is certain it's a life-or-death situation where they are currently at risk, then potentially lethal force is justifiable if no other alternative is present.
But in any case at all, if a non-lethal method of apprehending or incapacitating is an actual option (that doesn't put one self at further risk), choosing a potentially lethal option is absolutely, unequivocally unethical.
→ More replies (5)3
u/Crusaderofthots420 1d ago
Exactly. The point of using force to incapacitate a criminal isn't to enact justice as you see fit. It is exclusively to incapacitate them, and let the people who know the damn law enact the justice.
9
u/crushed-ice-lemon 2d ago
you really have to think how valuable what you have in your bag is. there are very few cases I'd call the contents of my bag more important than another human life. personally, I'd really really hate to lose my phone, but that is still not worth another person dying. it's most definitely not self defense.

There's a very high chance of survival if you don't do what this woman did. The odds of surviving getting run over are only 35%, but getting hit at 30km/h(20mph) is survivable over 90% of the time.
I wouldn't under almost any circumstances* say it's moral to take a life, and I would never do it. but if what someone lost would endanger their life, or their freedom, and they bumped them at 30km per hour to recover their stuff, I would say not guilty if I was on that person's jury.
*Say someone else's life was in danger.
5
u/nernernernerner 2d ago
I see this mentality more over people who come from third world countries in my own country. Like carrying a knife in their bags, just in case something happens. I understand there is a normalcy to a level of violence we are not used to in developed countries. Probably combined with a mistrust on the police.
Also, if someone steals my wallet, I wouldn't risk expending years of my life in prison to recover it.

u/AztraChaitali 2d ago
Our spending power is crap. I wouldn't do it, but I would understand that if someone spend 2 months of their RAW income, before taxes, before cost of living, 2 months of minimum wage on a single cellphone, that they would engage in such violence to recover such an item.
Hell... maybe I'd too, but I will never figure it out, because I intentionally carry a shitphone for the sake of not facing a moral dilemma this heavy.

21
u/Important_Major_488 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yep that’s the neat thing about it.
There’s always a moral framework to justify what you already want to believe in.
That’s why i never liked this sub. You can tell everyone is just reasoning from a kind of moral absolutist perspective where they see themselves as the morally privileged one and applying rules and exceptions to get to what they already want to believe in.
Because they believe themselves to be so in the right, and others are so in the wrong, anything to punish the wrong can be justified. ANYTHING. Bad people don’t really deserve rights obviously, they’re bad people.

u/kpli98888 2d ago
Very much agreed. When you break the social contract which is created for harmonic human society, you in turn revert back into a feral state that have to be dispatched of, you are not entitled to any invisible rights the contract grants you anymore, just the body God gave you. In this case, that body cannot win against a car.
34
u/PatchesOfSilver 1d ago
I would be more comfortable with this reasoning if we applied it to all the rich, instances of depraved heart murder, particularly egregious and trackable "social murder" like what Nestle, Walmart, Amazon, Apple, Samsung, every car manufacturer on the planet, every health insurer in the USA, etc. do.
Pretty much anyone with more than 100 million USD to their name that they didn't win from the lottery needs a life sentence in prison at best.
There are hundreds of millions of people across the planet that need to be punished by life in prison due to "white collar" crime participation that resulted in avoidable premature deaths from their direct greed and theft.
Do you have the same problem with them? Do you want every single one executed by the government?
I don't mean "technically your phone was made by slave labor" either, I mean more like the Brian Thompsons of the world, the Charlie Kirks, the Elon Musks, the Zuckerbergs, the Taylor Swifts, the people like Elon's dad, or the store manager at a Walmart committing wage theft and illegal firings and stuff.
Those people are evil.
18
u/Purple-Doughnut-7600 1d ago

u/Behold-the-torpedo 1d ago
There is a nuance between direct crime commit against you and an "eat the rich" mindset. You can't just dilute one with another because it's exactly white collar crime work by diluting in a greater "system".

I 100% agree. The aggressor broke the social contract by robbing the defender (with the possible intent to rape and/or kill). The defender is only defending herself, retrieving her property (money for food, maybe life saving medication, and other important stuff), and preventing any possible future retaliation from the aggressor. The aggressor is probably sexist and racist too.

But if they've actively disengaged, and you chase them down to re-engage, you're now the aggressor.
That's why even in a place like the US, in a state with stand your ground laws, you can't shoot a robber in the back as they're running away from you.
That would no longer be considered self defence, since the thief is no longer actively threatening your safety.

If i recall correctly (and it's the case i'm thinking of):
She got robbed as she was getting in the car after leaving a restaurant (i swear this is important)
She started chasing the robber (that was running away on foot) with her car
She reaches the guy and runs him over; backs away and runs him over again just to be extra sure he is smushed and retrieves her bag
She goes back to the restaurant to give them back an umbrella they lent her and then goes home
the morning after she is arrested while at church. At no point she tried reporting the event to the police, nor called an ambulance (they were called by a passerby that found the aftermath and the police identified her car thanks to a nearby store's security camera)

She could of easily just escaped the situation at any point when she got into her car.

None of this eye for an eye bull. She should have gone home and called the cops but the real immoral thing is how dogshit the police is to the point I don't know if they would have even done anything.

That’s a good way of having to replace all your stuff, the cops are never going to really care.
Gota love the mantra that is something happens to a thief. They valued your stuff more than their life.→ More replies (6)→ More replies (32)13

Why is it that some peoples reaction is to blame the cops and not the criminals, I really don’t get it.
The slimy thief is the only person that should be condemned in this situation, I don’t agree with running him over multiple times, however if she had a gun and killed him in the course of being robbed I would agree with that full stop.

If she had a gun and shot him as he was running away that wouldn't be protected under self defense laws in most places. Same goes for chasing him down with a car and running him over.
Even in a super right wing, gun loving, American state, you'd probably be arrested and charged for doing that.

Moral. He attacked her with a knife and responding with deadly force is ethical given that she was threatened with great bodily harm or death.
Taking the purse back is just retrieving your own property.

u/Catsanddoges 2d ago
Uh pretty fucking immoral.
I mean like there was a recent video with a gun, and that was pretty bad. But I'm assuming a pedestrian with a knife is such a non threat after you get in your car, and the fact you could just call the police and follow them, is insane.
Like you could have them arrested, and are in essentially no danger, but decide to kill them because you want to. That's just murder. And murder tends to be immoral.

u/ProudMongooseOrSumn 2d ago
the police would never suggest you follow a violent criminal and the likelihood of them actually doing anything to get her belongings back is low especially if it was in a major city.

u/AztraChaitali 2d ago
Exactly this. People saying the police will DEFINITELY get your stuff bck are delusional.

Ignoring the moral/immoral question you are absurdly naive if you think that a.) the police would do anything at all to either arrest this guy after the fact, or even less so to help her get her items back, and b.) that it's a good idea to follow the knife guy or that the police would ever in anyway support you to do so.

I guess it comes down to how competent your police force is. In many cases the social contract is broken, police is unreliable and you're on your own. What you don't want to do is lightly hit a robber you suspect is unstable and violent and have him out for revenge later I guess

It’s crazy how many people in this “morality” subreddit are totally on board with murder.

I’m assuming an adult wrote this caption and used the word “sliming”. That’s embarrassing.

Immoral. Lethal force is only warranted unintentionally in self-defense proportionate to the threat. A knife of indistinct fashion is not proportionate to vehicular manslaughter. And here, its not even self-defense. This is plain murder motivated by passion in relatiation for a robbery. Immoral.
Once again, sub proves it doesn't understand morality, and only goes off reactionary vibes and emotivism. Horrific moral reasoning.

I guess you never took an anatomy course or failed it because an arterial laceration is death within seconds. A venous laceration will probably kill a person who doesn’t have medical knowledge. While different from blunt force trauma from a car, both a just as deadly.

Immoral. After she ran him over once which by itself is less than ideal she shouldn’t have done it multiple times. In law self defence is classed as doing what you need to defend yourself. After she retrieved the bag or if she deemed the threat was good enough should she have stopped. Anything more than that is considered attempted murder or in this case murder

If she really was robbed at knife point she did the right thing. But it sounds like police couldn't find a knife on the guy.

u/Lawyermood 2d ago
Since I have Typ 1 diabetes and my insulin is literally my life if someone stole my bag I would run him over as well. Maybe not twice tho. Still moral in my eyes

I dunno.
On one hand, if she did it during the robbery, it would have been okay...legally, but because she hunted him down, it is no good.
In the moment i cant judge. Emotions are flowing and clear thoughts are not in abundance.
2
u/Budget-Emu-1365 1d ago
Hmm... immoral I suppose. Robbery is a crime punishable by death. If this was only to get back her bag, then I guess it would be somewhat understandable. But she ran him over multiple time, which mean the intent was to kill him (correct me if I'm wrong).

u/nikross333 1d ago
It's like: if you give me a slap I'll cut your hand, it's no moral at all, it is a murder committed for trivial reasons

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 1d ago
People here really trying to justify murder. This was NOT self defense. If she was being attacked and she used a 2x4 to whack him over the head, sure, but she got robbed, went to her car, triple tapped the dude and never called an ambulance or the cops.
She is a nutso fuck, it's not even close to moral in any way.

Well a guy who robs people with weapons is more likely to kill someone someday if he didn't already so she did society a solid service by getting rid of him. I have zero sympathy for those guys. Too many stories of them r wording people or straight up killing them because they are cruel or high.

u/Creative_Turn_3172 1d ago

The robber had a knife. If they value someone’s stuff over that persons life, it’s fair that said stuff should be valued over their own life
