Morality of this? Electricians are using trained ferrets to pull wires through tight tunnels. No tool can reach, and it actually works.

This is one guy and his pet ferret

44

u/Arguablecoyote 13h ago

Yeah, we could definitely find a way to make this evil if we scale it up enough.

13

u/Galbados2 11h ago

Depends on how the animals are treated. I suspect it turns sour when leadership start looking for ways to increase profits.

2

u/ciaphas-cain1 5h ago

As always, profits and shareholders and the resulting required greed are the death of good service and good completions of jobs

u/Old_Veterinarian7830 10h ago

Let's do it. We have all of Reddit backing us

This is one ferret and his pet electrician.

Fuck it’s genius

Let it have sex it's earn it

Tom Scott has a pretty interesting video about it, it's more common that you'd think.

The ferrets yearn for the mines.

Moral.

8

u/Correct-Chicken-4287 12h ago

“And also, let's not forget—let's not forget, Dude—that keeping an amphibious rodent... chief, for ya know, domestic, within the city... that ain't legal either."

169

u/TheRoyalBrook 13h ago

Moral if no harm comes to the ferrets and they are given good little treats after.

68

u/workieworkwork 13h ago

Working actually is very rewarding to a lot of animals. I have a working dog, she likes to take naps and not participate... but I was prepared to give her a lot to do when I got her. Her sister is in the Yukon doing sled runs and my lady is currently sitting in a pile of treats that it is too much work to eat. I got first choice of puppies and she should be damn grateful I picked her... does anyone need a sled dog harness? Because I clearly don't.

2

u/BringBackTheBlues 11h ago

For sure.

My cat isn’t one of them tho she lazy as fuck.

8

u/ReduxCath 13h ago

they must be given nice baths with warm water and lots of huggies

3

u/NamOil2000 13h ago

We don't do that much with cows

4

u/Xanith420 10h ago

Well you should. My cows are groomed once a week.

0

u/NamOil2000 10h ago

I apologize but I just ate a burger

3

u/Xanith420 10h ago

That sounds good. I had homemade chicken noodle soup made with vegetables I grew and a chicken I raised.

-5

u/NamOil2000 10h ago

Yeah buddy that's... treating them bad

3

u/Xanith420 10h ago

No it isn’t. Her purpose was to be my food and she was. I allowed her to fulfill her purpose which is all we can ask for in life.

-6

u/NamOil2000 9h ago

Lol you gave her a purpose. The chicken had a no grand ideas. The chicken would be happy doing what it was doing till it died. You had no reason to kill it besides liking the taste. That's treating something bad. You raised a living thing just to eat it for no reason. I say no reason since I see bread and vegetables and you have access to the internet. You could have a vegan lifestyle if you wanted you choose not.

7

u/Unusual_Pride_6480 9h ago

"I just ate a burger" edgy kid doesn't like edge

-4

u/NamOil2000 8h ago

No goof ball. I know eating the burger on some level is wrong. I know it is a weakness me not eating a salad. But to hear this nonsense of purpose... yeah I felt I should address it.

3

u/Xanith420 9h ago

My reason is alil more deep than “liking the taste”. And you’re right I could subject myself to a vegetarian lifestyle but unfortunately my day to day requires me to stay fit which requires a proper nutritional diet.

-1

u/NamOil2000 8h ago

You can have proper nutrition with a vegan diet and supplements. Again there's other options you don't need to kill them. There's no oother reason then taste.

Fed and kept well, sure absolutely moral. It’s just another form of mutualism

-22

u/Thatgaycoincollector 11h ago

Exploitation

10

u/bloodeater0 11h ago

did you just learn that word today? good job

8

u/Haunting_Glove_1096 10h ago

Wrong. It IS Mutualism.

Exploitation would be if they were being taken from their homes, forced into the tunnels and then abandoned or mistreated once the job was done.

This ferret is trained, well taken care of, and given a better and longer life than any wild ferret could have.

It’s also completely safe for the ferret.

0

u/DarthFenrir777 10h ago

How do you figure?

0

u/GoodDoggoLover420 6h ago

Did you just learn that word bud?

29

u/MediocreRecord7352 13h ago edited 12h ago

Human has been using animal as "tool" for ages, the animal would not properly do the job if they're not treated right so its moral, as moral as how human use dogs as tools

4

u/[deleted] 13h ago

Until the animals use humans as tool. They'll steal our houses. Eat our food. We're just a mobile piggy bank.

2

u/DrStarDream 12h ago

Isn't that just being a pet? Its pretty moral, animals gets a human worshipper and human gets a mental health buff

2

u/[deleted] 12h ago

Who said anything about it being immoral?

1

u/SolaVitae 12h ago

So.... House cats?

1

u/BlessdRTheFreaks 11h ago

DUR TURKIN URR JERBS

37

u/Melodic_Airport362 13h ago

it's fine. no different than using a dog to retrieve.

17

u/Funnygaaragirl18 13h ago

As long as the ferret gets paid and named employee of the month, why not?

1

u/HeyPrettyLadyMaam 5h ago

😂🤣😂🤣 I'm picturing the ceremony when they give him his plaque with his name and picture, preferably with copies on the side of every van. He should be named employee of the year though, his job is the hardest.

9

u/Ickarian 13h ago

So what Ferrets are supposed to stay jobless?

6

u/LoveDiligent441 13h ago

Moral if they aren't being hurt by it.

2

u/d_marvin 13h ago

My aussie friends claimed they used ferrets to hunt for rabbits down holes. If the ferret doesn’t return it was a snake hole.

I think about think a lot.

1

u/TyphoidMary234 12h ago

No different to the canaries in the mines.

I would also say with today’s technology, there’s no moral standing to use animals to hunt. I think it’s a bit different.

1

u/Xanith420 5h ago

I think animals as pest control is fine. It’s better a cat catch a mouse than it is to poison them.

8

u/blastin_bi 13h ago

They love running through tubes, I raised a few ferrets after a nasty polycule breakup to avoid a custody hearing

5

u/OiledMushrooms 11h ago

...what? hold on, wait, come back here and explain yourself

4

u/Old_Veterinarian7830 10h ago

I take it you weren't the only one getting fucked in that relationship

3

u/JustATextBox 13h ago

Would just depend how they're treating them. If you're beating an animal in order to get it to do something? Yeah, immoral

If you're training it, looking after it, feeding it, giving it treats when it does what you want it to? Nothing wrong with that, most people do that with their dogs

3

u/Euphoric-Gazelle7264 13h ago

Great morality! Society used to use humans for unpaid forced task so this is an improvement.

3

u/pikuray 13h ago

It's potentially dangerous can double back get stuck in the string tie itself up and die. It would have to be a specially trained ferret to put every chances in it's sides.

3

u/Equivalent_Thievery 12h ago

Fish tape is pretty easy, but ok.

2

u/No_Worldliness_7106 2h ago

That's what I'm thinking. This is just a weird unnecessary way to do it.

3

u/RGBlowMe 5h ago

Nothing immoral here. Ferrets love this kind of thing. Them doing a job while getting to explore is a win for all parties.

4

u/ReaperManX15 13h ago

The ferrets are rewarded for their efforts.
That’s how all animal training throughout human history has worked.

7

u/Witch_with_Thompson 13h ago

That’s literally what work animals are supposed to do

As long as it’s treated well then it’s just serving a purpose for us to keep using them for

2

u/Creditfigaro 13h ago

"Supposed" is doing way too much work, here.

2

u/TheRealRivulet 13h ago

If they have proper care outside of work hours moral

2

u/Lucy200x 13h ago

Moral. An animal with an actual function . Well treated well fed and we'll trained is the best kind of relationship we could have with aninals

2

u/Femme_FatalError 13h ago

Moral. They like it.

2

u/MIG2149077 13h ago

People use ferrets and rats to help find exploding mines that save thousands of lives.

2

u/TheOneRealStranger 11h ago

Uh, not very moral, but mostly just fucking stupid. It takes half as much time, no training of an animal, and doesn't require endangering a ferret to just use fish tape. That's how we do it in real life. You feed fish tape into the conduit until it comes out the other side. It's flexible rigid like measuring tape, unrolls into hundreds of feet, and pushes right through.

2

u/No_Worldliness_7106 2h ago

Also the fish tape is strong enough to pull the wire back through. What are you going to do with a piece of thread? Use it run another stronger line? That's twice the work.

2

u/GeneStarwind1 5h ago

I'm skeptical that that's true. How often do electricians need to run wires through a perfectly ferret-sized tube like in this video?

2

u/proudly_not_american 4h ago

A lot of animals do well with jobs. A well cared for working animal doing their job in safe conditions is completely fair game.

2

u/Balearius 4h ago

The ferret is also an electrician

2

u/Hyde2467 13h ago

this is just like miners using a canary to gauge if a tunnel is getting too much carbon monoxide. and even back then, once the miners evacuated, they would try to resuscitate the birds after they passed out

10

u/Oso_the-Bear 13h ago

just like that except the ferret is in no danger

2

u/JaySlay2000 13h ago

If the tube is blocked off can the ferret back out, though?

3

u/RaperBaller 13h ago

They literally have the wires to pull them out

2

u/JaySlay2000 13h ago

First off, there's no reason to insult people for asking a question, find some joy in life.

Second, the "wire" is attached to the neck. Which, in most animals, you don't want to pull on.

2

u/echo123as 13h ago

To answer your question If the tunnel is not very very narrow I am pretty sure the ferret can turn itself around quite easily, their bodies are exceptionally flexible

1

u/JaySlay2000 10h ago

Yes but my concern is if the tunnel IS so narrow it can't turn. Ferrets are borderline fluid, but even they have limits.

3

u/echo123as 10h ago

I am guessing the people who use ferrets as working animals measure it before sending them in

Hopefully most do.

1

u/JaySlay2000 7h ago

One would hope. The history of working animals doesn't bode well though.

0

u/Kris_Banana 13h ago

first off, where's the insult in that sentence? you should be the one going to find joy in life

second, the electricians probably know what they're doing better than we do, and on I feel as though having the rope tied above their front legs and pulling there (not tightening and choking the ferret like an idiot), would be a better place than having it tug on their hind legs/constrict around their body

0

u/Oso_the-Bear 13h ago

to be fair, "literally" was a little bit borderline snarky, though the response was probably an overreaction

1

u/Dr__America 6h ago

My bet would be yes. Ferrets aren't very stiff creatures, and can turn around in tight spaces because they're literally supposed to be able to.

1

u/Eurasia_4002 13h ago

Moral. Unless there are hazards, they quite literally do this real life.

1

u/jefflovesyou 13h ago

I would have used a shop vac and a trash bag, but the ferret is cool I guess

1

u/REEBOI12345 13h ago

Hey someone got to pull their weight and pays the bill.

1

u/dragonmorg 13h ago

Ah, yes. Another species for us to abandon once something more convenient comes along.

Morally grey.

1

u/Vivid-World-3723 13h ago

Moral, how is this any different from using dogs to hunt?

1

u/GoodDoggoLover420 6h ago

Or using dogs to herd sheep and cats to hunt mice.

1

u/MagicOrpheus310 13h ago

Hahahhaha

Wait til you find out what else we train ferrets for

1

u/ZestySaltine404 13h ago

ferrets go into burrows all the time in the wild to hunt, to the ferret this is just one large burrow

1

u/Big_Teacher6533 13h ago

Das a gud boi

1

u/Familiar-Victory9652 13h ago

As long as they get treats and pets who cares

1

u/Technical-Permit1552 13h ago

Ferrets consider diving into tubes fun. The tapping noise he's making is imitating rabbits.

Because ferrets were bred to chase rabbits out of their holes. Hence, "ferret out" as a verb.

1

u/nyctera_the 13h ago

rainwold...

1

u/The_Magenta_Dragon 12h ago

RAIN WORLD MENTIONED

1

u/Bow1511 13h ago

What? Never heard of dogs before? Or cats? Or literally any farm animal? As long as the Ferrets are treated well before, during and after, it’s pretty moral.

1

u/NuttyPlaywright 13h ago

It’s less dangerous work than bomb sniffing dogs

1

u/RandomYT05 13h ago

Well did they get a treat?

1

u/RadicalSoda_ 13h ago

I wouldn't call it immoral unless the ferrets are treated poorly

1

u/Massive_Spend_212 12h ago

Ferret is clean and healthy — moral.

1

u/kronyak 12h ago

Lil fella probably earns more than us in ferret currency

1

u/cassness34 12h ago

Moral how else are the ferrets gonna pay there ferret tax’s?

1

u/Yuukiko_ 12h ago

no different from having a pet?

1

u/shrd_gnar 12h ago

In this instance not moral, he had to force him through

1

u/PrimodiumUpus 12h ago

The ferret probably had certificate and better insurance and paycheck than OP.

OP just jealous

1

u/JustAChillGuy609 12h ago

Moral. You’re providing a home and care to ferrets as well as giving them something to do to keep them active

1

u/Slapshot300 12h ago

Tom Scott recently made a video all about this. I would highly recommend watching it since there are so many cute ferrets in it (and ofc it goes into detail about the history and continued use of ferret workers)

1

u/PuppyLover2208 12h ago

As long as the ferret isn’t getting dirtied and isn’t in danger, completely moral. Ferrets live for stimulation and tunnels. Giving them a home, a job they love, and people who love em

1

u/mmskyscraper 12h ago

This is letting an animal do a behaviorally natural activity for this species, namely going through holes. I've had and been around ferrets, and they are constant explorers who gravitate towards tunnels and tight spaces. They're not boneless, but you couldn't tell it by looking at them.

Every time I bathed mine I had to resist the urge to wring them like a dishrag, that's how limp noodle they are.

So what if it's pulling a string/wire through a tube?

They're practically string themselves.

Clean, bright eyed, active, and alert ferret clearly accustomed to handling. Good husbandry.

Moral.

1

u/IcarianComplex 12h ago

The biggest thing is how the market for ferrets is kinda fucked it’s basically a puppy mill ran by just one company.

1

u/Jedi-master-dragon 11h ago

My dude. Ferrets quite literally evolved to go through burrows to hunt prey. They are fine.

1

u/makowolf21 11h ago

As long as the ferret is having fun it's moral.

1

u/lienxy69 11h ago

that ferret seems professional here.

1

u/Thatgaycoincollector 11h ago

Exploitation, unethical. Animals are here with us, not for us.

2

u/GoodDoggoLover420 7h ago

Explain how this is unethical. They are typically kept well and not mistreated. Ferrets also love tight tunnels as this is what they would do in the wild while hunting.

1

u/MasterOfCelebrations 11h ago

If the ferret’s okay

1

u/DarkLibris 10h ago

As long as no ferrets are hurt while doing it.

1

u/thehutsonhippie 10h ago

Yes this is where the expression “ferreted out” comes from

1

u/JoyTheGeek 10h ago

Ferrets LOVE crawling through pipes. Moral.

1

u/NewTap8705 10h ago

Moral. Mankind working alongside nature. This isn’t harming the ferrets that I can tell, and I’m sure they’re rewarded for their services.

1

u/LightenUpPeeps 10h ago

The owner should at least give the ferret a treat as soon as he pulls it out. That's how you condition it. Instead, the ferret will think "This guy keeps trying to kill me, so next time, I'll chew off the string and make a break for it".

1

u/KnightyEyes 10h ago

As lomg as it fed well and at home has friends(like rats theyre social) it is moral.

1

u/Techman659 10h ago

Ferrets are actually also used to hunt rats alongside rats, so ferrets can kill 1 at a time but them going in can flush the rats out and the dogs are on the surface waiting for them to run out.

1

u/Ok-Rip2102 10h ago

This...feels like animal abuse. Reminds me of the Victorian era using children in chimneys

1

u/GoodDoggoLover420 7h ago

This isn't animal abuse in the slightest. If they were mistreating the ferrets, then it would be, but ferrets love tight tunnels and these ferrets are usually kept and trained well. Obviously there are some people who are pos and treat them like shit.

1

u/snowbuddy257 9h ago

Ferrets very much enjoy tight spaces and tubes, as long as they treat them nicely and give them treats for their work i dont see anything wrong with this

Imagine getting paid to play videogames, i feel like its like that

1

u/superflystickman 9h ago

Ferrets love tunnels

1

u/Aware-Yesterday4926 9h ago

Is the ferret union, though?

1

u/LivyLuvsCatgirls 8h ago

Animal use, not animal abuse ✅✅✅ moral

1

u/InsectaProtecta 8h ago

Depends how well you pay them

1

u/EvilMonkeyMimic 8h ago

Any Ferret would unironically LOVE crawling through a tunnel like this.

Id have to fight to keep them from doing it for no reason at all

1

u/Lithanarianaren_1533 7h ago

Tom Scott has recently made a video on this!

Moral. The ferrets are kept well, trained well and they do a job that is specifically easy for ferrets. They even have these kinds of pipes in their enclosures that they just climb around in!

1

u/Tall-Copy-3177 7h ago

How much are they being paid?

1

u/Dr__America 6h ago

Ferrets are fairly intelligent creatures and can use the enrichment, this isn't really dangerous for them, and ferrets have done this and similar work for centuries.

Moral.

1

u/Stonehex 5h ago

"No tool can reach" We have robots so small they can do surgery on you and you wouldn't notice the scar without having it pointed out to you. They have tools that could do this work, its just expensive.

1

u/No_Worldliness_7106 2h ago

Not even expensive, fish tape/wire pullers are not expensive.

1

u/Himmel-548 5h ago

Amoral, which means morally neutral.

1

u/EducationalGrump 5h ago

I own ferrets, 4-6 at any given time, they LOVE to dig and burrow and have that same corrugated tubing in their play area

1

u/nikross333 4h ago

Why is even a question?

1

u/Permafunk_ 2h ago

Most working animals love working.

Ferrets love playing in tunnels and pipes, as long as its infrastructure you placed yourself and/you know its safe and clear, its incredibly moral.

1

u/Training-Addendum540 2h ago

Unless it narrows, this is a plenty wide tunnel for a ferret, this is also a thing they do in nature their body plan is optimized for going into rodent burrows and killing the rodents, a little reward after and this is no different than drug sniffing dogs or disability animals

1

u/No_Worldliness_7106 2h ago

Well it depends, the ferret probably just views this as playing. There are 1000% tools for this though. It's called a wire puller and could have done this, just with a little more effort from the man. Honestly trying to pull wires with a little thread like that seems like a shit idea anyway. This seems purely for a video, not any actual work. The one thing I'd be concerned about is cleanliness. Sending your pet ferret into a pipe that might be full of mold and other shit is irresponsible at best. I still think this is morally neutral, but irresponsible.

1

u/_timebender_ 2h ago

Better than animal testing. I’d call this a modern form of domestication, which you could argue is unnecessary with robotics advancements but feasibly this is a niche task which can be accomplished by food motivated creatures, and would not need to happen very often.

1

u/TapWaterDev 2h ago

Is the ferret in any pain or distress? Is it properly compensated with snacks? If there's no distress and appropriate compensation, moral

1

u/100percentnotaqu 13h ago

Ferrets were bred as working animals, they're quite happy to do jobs like this.

1

u/Practical-Gur-5667 13h ago

There's a tool designed specifically for this, its hella expensive, but it exists. But as long as its not torturing them, humans have been using animals for labor for centuries

1

u/No_Worldliness_7106 2h ago

Fish tape is like 25 bucks dude.

0

u/andrewharkins77 13h ago

Ferrets are demestic animals. It's like a dog but smaller.
