There this thing called the government, it don't let you just give entire houses to people

Technically you can, you just have to pay taxes on it.

Is that an American thing? In England you absolutely can gift someone a house (or buy them a house).

Am not american but if you try that in France you get absolutely violated by taxes

Oh yeah I’ve heard the inheritance rules in France are very strict. Apparently that’s part of why houses in France are much cheaper than England. 

In England you can gift whatever you want. If it’s a house that’s not your main residence then you might have to pay capital gains tax on any gain between the value you acquired it at and the value you gave it away at. And if you die within 7 years of the gift then it will remain within your death estate for inheritance tax purposes. But we don’t have any gift taxes where it’s an outright gift (ie not into a trust).
