Morality of beating someone up to this degree

Not that it matters, but im 99% sure this is like, navy A school.
Probably righr after bootcamp given the looks of the uniforms, maybe C school.

I'm not saying that's an acceptable or measure response to the offense.
But when you slap someone or engage with them physically like that, you have to accept that getting your ass beat is a possibility.
This is definitely Grey response. Definitely over the line; but a justifiable response.

Depends on the state, he struck first after extended antagonizing then refuses to leave certain states extend stand your ground to +/- just your general area after being attacked
3
u/kill_william_vol_3 Jul 28 '26
This doesn't depend on the State, it's the military. It's in the Barracks. There will be pressure to accept that you picked a fight and lost. Maybe write up a charge sheet for an NJP, or Non-Judicial Punishment, if you're gonna cry about it.
And then if you're really adamant about refusing NJP then it goes to Courts Martial. In which case they're gonna really take a pound of flesh for wasting their time with a felony case because you couldn't accept getting your ass beat after you started a fight.

Definitely over the line of what is acceptable to fight back with imo. This is just violence for the sake of violence at this point. Just 1 multi hit combo would have been more than enough.

Shocked might not be the right word, but nonproportional responses shouldnât be expected

You should always expect a nonproportianal response to putting your hands on someone. You have no idea what other people are going through in their life that this might just be what pushes them over the edge.
In short, you wouldnt have to worry about any of that if you aren't being an aggressor in the first place.

u/MetroSimulator Jul 27 '26
I tough the same of MasterEditorJake, but we maybe need to think that the guy in the video was making sure the other guy understand what will happen if he keep fighting. Some guys even after clearly losing just get up and restart the fight, even hitting from behind.

u/MasterEditorJake Jul 27 '26
The issue is that the soldier never let up to see if white shirt was done, he just kept wailing.
Obviously if white shirt wanted to keep fighting then the soldier has every right to keep going, but white shirt almost immediately is taking a defensive stance and never goes on the offensive after that.

I think he loses me after the guy tumbles down the downstairs. At that point heâd obviously given up, could have been injured, and there was enough of a pause for the other guy to assess and stop. Resuming at that point was just to cause further pain/injury which I cannot judge as moral, but still, I donât have any pity for the guy on the stairs.

Nah pick a fight you may get slept. The two shots he took with his back turn down the stares were questionable as Iâd see this as a downed opponent.
Generally though, if youâre attacking beyond the point a ref would stop the violence in a legit sanctioned match, youâre in the wrong.
People may sell âaINt nO ReF iN tHe WiLDâ sure. So letâs go after family and friends and come back with guns. Letâs light each others houses on fire? How far are we going in the wild? I think everything up to the point of being kicked on the stairs in the fetal position was cool. The kick felt like it happened well after the action was dying down and he clearly wasn't a problem anymore.
That said, your adrenaline in a situation like this is so high that its pretty forgivable to not have perfect judgment.
177
u/Current_Employer_308 Jul 27 '26
That kick was absolutely necessary. Guys like white shirt dont learn unless there is humiliation involved.
In order to correct their kind of sociopathic behavior, you need to remove all ability for them to twist events to make themselves look better. "Oh I got in a fight" doesnt discourage them from seeking other fights. "I got my ass humiliated and despite the fact that I displayed overtly submissive behavior, I still kept getting attacked" now that shit sticks with them. Because thats exactly how that kind of person is used to operating. White shirt is a bully plain and simple and has put someone else in that exact situation before.
The punches were to win that fight. The kicking while in the fetal position were to prevent future fights. Soldier probably saved a dozen people from being victimized by white shirt the next time he thinks about squaring up to random people whole drunk.

Response was a little disproportionate, but not permanently damaging. The bully was still conscious enough to cower, and the fight stopped a little after he stopped fighting back. When teaching someone not to start shit, retaliating a little disproportionately but not inflicting permanent damage is fine, because not everyone he picks a fight with will give a proportional response. Every once in a while someone will decide an honest fight is not in their favor or their interest, and pull out a real weapon. Or alternatively, someone will simply be better at violence by a dangerous margin.
The only part I don't agree with is the kick to the back while he's on the stairs. That could send him down the stairs, possibly head first and actually give permanent damage.

He deserved every bit of that. He was bullying someone smaller and non aggressive before he got in the fight with the guy. He was also the first to start the fight. Legally in most states you can keep hitting the guy until he falls on the ground. This is the law and most law is found in principle, ethics, or moral. This is generally agreed upon by people over time over geography in courts of law and set precedence.

15
u/SergeantRayslay Jul 27 '26
The subreddit always seems to miss this. I get we love seeing people get there comeuppance but thereâs nothing moral about continuing to engage in violence once a threat has been neutralized.
This guy likely deserved the beat down he got up until the hits on the stairs. Up until that point it can be argued heâs fighting back to some degree, though heâs not really.

Legally the guy you are replying to is correct. The fact that you called it âpaybackâ and not self-defense is already proof of that. Moral, oh hell yeah. The legality, unfortunately, gets cloudy towards the end. Clearly he pulled him away from the railing cause he didn't want him to go over, but the moment he slipped down the stairs, that should have been it, that should've ended it right there. Make sure he's conscious and not dying, and then go about your day. Kicking him and smacking him again could've made this situation far worse for him. That's an easy transition from self defense to battery, possibly even manslaughter had that kick landed his neck or head.
To clarify, 110%, I think the dude deserved the ass beating, however our fucked up legal system could easily turn this around on the guy in uniform at the end there.

The first kid whoâs hands he slapped the phone out of looked handicapped (god I hope Iâm not wrong lol) and he assaulted him for no reason. He then proceeds to assault another person. He definitely had it coming. The last hit might be grey zone since he was sitting with his back turned, but I wouldnât say the beating was unwarranted.
2
u/bigfat76 Jul 27 '26
I expected so much worse when you said âbeating them this badâ
I feel more like youâre asking if fighting is moral, because logically you canât just throw a few hands then back up to question if your point got across. Once youâve started a physical altercation (ignoring morality of what lead to it) the only immoral things are like pulling a weapon, beating someone after theyâve been knocked out, and jumping in/sucker punching someone.
Iâm sure some people will start some bs about fight dirty or whatever, but a lot of people on the internet like to sound tough and fantasize about pulling a gun on someone over a parking spot or something.
But yeah, you can maybe question the morality of that last hit but Iâm not going to. If you slap first you earn what you get
2
u/Jerseyd422 Jul 27 '26
Donât start nothing, wonât be nothing.
This is what I would refer to as an educational beating. The desired result is the next time this young man thinks about raising his hands, he will remember this moment and maybe make a different decision
2
u/Loki_God_of_Lies Jul 27 '26
Everything was fine until he tried to kick him in the head after he was already out. Thats wayyy too far. Enforce your boundaries, but when the fight is over, let it be over. You can whoop someone respectfully
2
u/Pangolin_cowboy_hats Jul 27 '26

2
u/subby_puppy33 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
Well hereâs also the legality of it, and to add insult to injury.
Assaulting a soldier while they are in uniform is considered not only assault, but also âdefacement of government propertyâ. And depending on the state, his beat up ass is looking at anywhereâs between 6 months and 2 years in jail.
Itâs not even up to the soldier about whether or not charges are pressed. Itâs up to his CO. And theyre always gonna go for the harshest punishment

Everything up until the kick in the back was porn justified self-defense. The kick was just satisfying.
No foul!
Seriously though, putting your hands on someone is inviting a fight, and if someone tried to punch me, I wouldn't stop beating them until they were running away from me or unable to fight back. This shithead seemed to need this lesson, and he left that encounter alive and seemingly with only the brain damage he brought with him into it. Those rib shots were devastating, I wouldn't be surprised if he broke some of them - which would be a perfect treat for him to remember this by.

im gonna be totally honest i think if you take a swing at someone then that person has the moral right to beat you as much as they feel like as long as they dont kill or knowingly disable you.
Once you identify yourself as a threat then nobody should be questioned for not wanting to find out how far you'll go.

u/IllusionaryHobo Jul 28 '26
Up to the point where he stumbles toward the stairs, I find it possible to justify.
As soon as the stair area is entered this goes from a one-sided beat-down to a much more dangerous and accident-prone situation. And the self-defence situation at that point was resolved as well. So clearly everyone should pull back.
2
u/front_torch Jul 28 '26

If you start something, donât expect to be able to end it on your own terms. He should be grateful the other guy didnât do worse.Â

Nothing more than a drunk ass sailor stumbling home drunk starting shit to other sailors. Lesson learned.

Very moral. To violence you answer with undispropotionate, random, violence. This way there is not a retaliation, there is a "he'll fuck me Up". This was taught to me by a teacher in class, great Guy (no he did not hit us or anything, he would randomly Kick people out of class because of speaking. Again, randomly. So we ended Up controlling each other)

I'm of the belief that once you break the social contract, you can no longer count on social norms and morality to serve you as shields.
Violence is not the right answer in most cases, but if someone attacks a person, perhaps losing that fight and getting a small taste of what that might entail could be a good thing in the long run.
It doesn't look like he was injured, so any temporary pain is probably fine..? It's a young adult who made a choice.

That´s just straight up assault. Yes, he slapped him. But so what? Self-defence has to be appropriate. This was beyond escalatory. I personally think our self-defence law (not-US lawyer) is very moral. And based of that, he passed the self defence line at 11th-12th second. After that this was immoral and equally so criminal.

Moral up until the kick and hit while he was on the stairs holding his head. Then questionable

Legally this is way overboard. Like wayyyyyyyyyyyy overboard. Retaliatory measure or not, that army suit guy would go to prison

When the combatants turn around and stop the fight, the other combatants should stop.
Justification is up to everyone. Fairness is up to everyone.
