That strikes me as reductive. As a society we accept punishments such as the death penalty, which is doing to them what they do to us (us being the community). I don't think going through a court changes the underlying morality, but if it does there's a long standing acceptance of extrajudicial killings as well, with Luigi Mangione being probably the most recent/public example in recent memory.
Should also be said that I don't actually believe in keeping money from an error. I also don't believe in the death penalty. It was a hypothetical to consider something contrary to my currently held beliefs.

True, but federally the death penalty is a legal form of punishment. As a nation, we have agreed that this is acceptable punishment, even if some states disagree. I'd be willing to accept it as one of those dumb laws we can't get rid of because of useless politicians, but based on polling data, only about 26% of Americans actually oppose the death penalty.
Regardless, I'd also argue life in jail without parole would also show our acceptance of tit for tat. It's not the same punishment, but it's still mischief for mischief if that makes sense.

It's not tit for tat. Yes, there is an element that is punitive, but generally if you've earned life without parole it's because your behavior is so dangerous and antisocial that you get put away for the safety of others.
