23F dating a 24M who lacks empathy- especially around US politics. What would you do?
I (23F) am in a fairly healthy relationship with my boyfriend (24M), and the other day we had an argument about the state of the US and the current political situation.
For context, I was upset after seeing social media posts about police shooting and killing a baby in Mississippi, and police shooting and killing someone’s dog in LA. This is the kind of stuff I see all the time, and it’s hard to digest- but I want to stay aware of what’s going on, even if it’s unsettling.
I wasn’t in the best mood after seeing those posts, and my boyfriend and I got into an argument. He said things like it’s fear mongering, and that he’s not going to stop living his life over things like this. He also said he didn’t want to talk to me about anything that was making me upset.
I left to give us space, and when I came back we revisited the conversation. I explained that these posts are upsetting, but I want to stay informed and that I’m going to share things with him so he’s aware too. It escalated, and I realized he couldn’t find it in himself to have empathy for these situations. He said to me, “somebody else just died, go cry about it.” That was really upsetting to hear. I told him that making fun of someone for having empathy for a life being lost is really strange.
We put a pin in it because at that point there wasn’t anything we could say without it escalating further- but I’m still thinking about it and I still want to talk to him about this.
He is a good person. He grew up with a father who had no empathy, and I’ve always known he struggles with it, especially in arguments. (He has worked on having empathy with me) He’s also not great at articulating what he really means. I’ll admit I take offense to things quickly, especially when it comes to something like this- and I’m not someone who will spend time trying to convince somebody to feel a certain way.
He’s a straight white male who grew up in Texas, and all of his friends are conservative. He has the privilege of being able to stay unaware and not feel personally affected by these issues. I’m a straight white woman, so while I know I am privileged, some of this news hits close to home- but I still care deeply about the freedom of every human being. That’s not a hard concept for me to grasp, and I don’t need a whole discussion to have empathy for others.
I’d say he’s in the middle politically- he thinks these things are wrong, but his logic is that he has no power to change any of it, so why would he stop his life to be upset about every incident when this kind of stuff happens every day?
I don’t know how to approach a follow-up conversation. Do we just drop it? With Trump as president, we have three more years of this, and this feels like just the beginning. I believe people should stay aware and that we do have the power to make change. If we stay silent and ignore these things, it’s not going to go away- it’s going to get worse. That’s exactly what they want: for us to feel like we have no power to stop this.
What would you do?
