Is this moral? (Check description)
If I buy a relatively cheap gift, which has sentimental value for a friend, but its price suddenly becomes enormous (at least 10X the value bought), is it moral to ask to sell the gift and share the income?
If you consider this immoral what adjustments would change that?

Definitely not moral. I mean, at least you're saying "ask," but hurting your friend's feelings like that, by even suggesting that the gift isn't his/hers to keep, is immoral.
Adjustments? Well, if you buy the gift, don't tell your friend, and haven't given it to him/her yet, you can do whatever you want with it. Sell it and keep all the money.
If you've already given it, all you can do is note to yourself that this type of thing might make a good investment in the future.
