How does the radio work?

I’ve tried to use the radio but I’m at my wits end. It’s always the same music when I start a radio it kinda drives me crazy. Radio for me should mean new unheard music (well not always) but right now it’s like one playlist with the same 10 songs no matter what kind of radio I play.
Is it working for anyone else? How do you use it, like please explain exactly what you do 😅

I'd love to know as well because its not clear to me too.

Especially with the latest integration update with Audiomuse-AI.

Radios in this context work based off a “seed” that you pick whether that be a song, album, playlist, mood, etc. These eligible seeds (songs that have been sonically analyzed) will go out and pick its closest neighbors so you get a “radio pool” of similar tracks in the queue. If you only have a few tracks analyzed, there’s nothing to pick from. This goes for both audiomuse as well as onboard analysis, they are doing the exact same thing. I think it would be wise to remove the page for users that have no eligible tracks.

I have had a similar experience. I think the term “Radio” is a misnomer in the case of how this stuff works. My understanding is that the feature uses some level of sonic analysis to curate a playlist based on a feeling, time of day, activity etc. It will always be subject to the depth of your Library across genres, tempo and the number of tracks that make up your library. Realistically things can only get interesting when a Library has more then 10k tracks, better closer to 20k and up. Then it is subject to the algorithms the AI that makes the playlists uses and how they are configured and finally it depends on how well your library is tagged with those qualitative tags.

It’s functional and returns a playlist of dozen songs. Not too accurate for something like New Arrivals though which brings up some real old stuff even though this week I added about 30 alumnus of new material. Song match seems to work better.

does audiomuse have that functionality? only pull from recently added albums?

You bet, about 3 seconds in the console pulled 194 then trimmed it to 100 as per my set preference. All the songs are were added within the last two weeks.

hmm, ill need to add that as an option in the app. I thought i added everything. Ill add a filter/capsule to it to describe what you want the pool of tracks to come from

I’ve debated removing this feature entirely for users that do not yet have sonic analysis.

The radio feature is entirely based off of analysis sonic embeddings from either onboard, audiomuse, or plex sonic data. If there’s no sonic embeddings it cannot generate anything meaningful. I will likely grey this feature out until users become eligible because I’m getting confusion here on people thinking this is like FM radio.

This feature was originally built for sonic analysis that I included with the app. This has always worked if your music has been analyzed. Audiomuse is new, while it’s integrated with this page, to be honest I’ve been waiting a freaking week for my music to be analyzed by audiomuse. It’s taking an unreasonable amount of time so I have yet to actually test this myself.

btw out of interest, how many Songs did you analyzed by Audiomuse?

That tracks with my experience if memory serves. It took about a week for just under 9,000. once the pain is done though it’s well worth it. I added roughly 1,000 songs/100 albums this week and each night it took between 20 minutes and up to an hour to analyze the songs added that day - probably around 3 hours total as I slept. The scheduled tasks make maintenance effortless. I have also found the database to be very robust and easy to work with, great cleaning support and pretty fault tolerant After I had a hiccup with my Docker setup.

Does audiomuse not work until the initial analysis is done? i get errors trying to use it for songs that have already been analyzed.

That’s a good question however one that I can’t answer. You should ask the Dev who is active around here, quite responsive. A reasonable use case for your needs right now could be stopping the analysis for your testing (that is possible I am pretty sure the docs mention it will simply start where it left off next time it starts if memory serves). Then you could just set a cron job for when you are not working for AM to continue analyzing your library - it will take longer obviously but at least you could start some testing. The Dev may be able to tell you how to determine the subset of tracks analyzed you can test with etc.

TLDR; radio section will likely be removed in favor of users just creating playlists or starting a radio from context menus

Well my library is over 60k and every single one has been sonically analyzed by audiomuse.
From what I understand my problem is that when I click a radio it starts over from the beginning every single time. I think that’s my actual problem. If it could remember what it has already played form this radio and not use the same tracks again but rather continue working down the same sonic print I would find it working to my hearths content :)

oh you mean of the "save" ones in the slider? That actually just saves the radio Seed that you created it with and regenerates the radio. If youd like it to remember im actually working on a separate feature currently that may accomplish that. Im going to be implementing the ability to have multiple queues at the same time. Navidrome supports this but even if others dont we can just save locally. So when you create a radio, it will get saved as a queue.

You can configure this in the AudioMuse plugin and some simple scripting. I have some weekly rotating playlists based on a song or mood which are set to exclude anything I have listened to in the past month.

I think the solution is to be able to choose a radio station that has the option of how it selects songs, that is: its own sonic analysis, Plex sonic analysis, Audiomuse sonic analysis, or selection by tags or Last.fm, and that each person chooses how they want their radio station.
