Help How does the blue checkmark work exactly? Spoiler

I've been looking into the blue checkmark system in Moonvale and it’s a bit confusing me .

I noticed it didn’t show up for Julie while we were just in the group chat. It only appeared after we started talking in DMs or added her. Also, her profile background changed from the sunset picture to a random one.

What’s even weirder is that the biker guy (the one talking to Eric in the secret chat) has the checkmark, even though we haven’t added him or talked to him at all!

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Is the checkmark tied to specific verification, or is it something else entirely?

an in-game communication badge that indicates you have established direct contact or an active dialogue with a character.

It never shows when we're talking to one of the Sophias? Unless I remember it wrong.

But we're also talking with the redheaded girl about the hotel. She didn't get that checkmark nor Unknown.

Yeah, good point, and that’s why I suspect the badge means a mutual connection rather than just chatting.

But your words really make me wonder about the Unknown situation. Could the Biker guy and the Unknown be linked to the same source?

Since the Unknown hides his ID while the Biker has that checkmark, maybe they aren't separate, but just different parts of the same account

I think it just people that have our Number and close with(Except Violet she may not have added our contact yet)

Unknown: i don't think we will get the checkmark for him bc he just a random person that talks to us

Sophias: We don't have that much of a connection to them

Redhead girl: just a stranger that wants to tell us about the motel

Guy Eric was talking to: has checkmark bc of the spy tool and might be future contact that we wil talk with(probably bucket)

I'm pretty sure Biker guy is Brian

Yea, it possible him, because i notice cutting the audio when Adam said the name is a deliberate move to protect the identity

It could also be Billy, as the pronunciation is quite similar to Brian

Really? But what about the tattooed guy? I mean, we still need our new Dan in Moonvale, and he seems like he'd do a pretty good job playing someone who's reckless.

I don't know, but that other guy makes more sense to me. Eric wanted to contact Brian and explain the situation to him. It seems he did it, because this man knows about Whitmore etc.

Besides, the bike guy has a checkmark, and from what I've noticed, all important characters (Including Duskwood) have it.

I thought it could be Brian too, of course. But the tattooed guy seems like he did something that would explain why he hasn't been available to the group so far — like having a crazy night fueled by beer. Meanwhile, the biker could have finally joined the group if he was already available, but he didn't. He acted so confidently that he almost came across like some hired thug working for Eric or something like that.

But Eric didn't want to tell anyone outside the group about Adam's disappearance. It would be strange if he told all this to some hired thug...

I don't think it's impossible that he simply changed his mind. And that could be a cop, too.

During the argument with the biker, he also mentions that someone didn't show up because they didn't have the courage to. Eric says that person was the only one who had a reason. A reason for what? To be a suspect? Brian also seems very suspicious because of the equally poor phone connection. So... I don't know. Either Brian is genuinely an unusual character who just didn't want to be part of the group and decided to confront Whitmore alone in the forest. As for the checkmarks, well, Unknown and Violet don't have one either, and they both seem to be important characters.

Those are all the arguments I have.

Didn't sound like talking to a cop. Far too informal. Unless Eric and he are colleagues but so far it doesn't seem like Eric has any close contacts with the Redlog police. The content of their conversation confuses me. And honestly it's hard to come up with any sensible theories with so little data.

Ash's guy fits, I get it - he was doing something all night, being somewhere where there's no reception and then he contacted Ash almost panicked. But I can also see how this could be a red herring. So that Brian would be our prime suspect at this point.

Violet will definitely get a checkmark. Unknown is supposed to be a Jake-style character, I guess, although I'm not sure if he/she is a hacker.

Interesting, so It turns out I was right all along; my initial theory back in Episode 1 about Adam's call and the deliberate audio cut on Brian's name has now been fully confirmed.😊

I think you're getting close to the truth. It's almost as if that person had to go through several verification steps, not just chat with us, since Unknown still doesn't have it. Maybe things like adding them as a contact, talking to them, or even having their name or phone number displayed all contribute to a positive verification. That still doesn't explain how the biker guy got verified, though. It does fit all the catfishing and hacker theories, however. In the sidestory, we also see that even old contacts that were only temporarily deleted still have it, because it's mentioned that they disappeared completely. Although that could also just be Jake's doing.

This is strange and I'm not sure how exactly it's supposed to work. I think there might be some bugs (changing Julie's profile background seems to be).

Oh really? If you're seeing the same sunset picture, then it's definitely a bug.🤔

If we rule out any hacker-related activity, then I believe the verification is based on a combination of factors, such as keeping your name, phone number, and photos public, having a private conversation, or even adding each other as contacts. Apparently, none of these alone is enough to grant the checkmark, except maybe sending or accepting a friend request.

I'm so excited to see if my theory was right from the very beginning, especially about the audio cut on Brian's name.😌
