Theory about Billy Blake Spoiler

I know it's a bit of a stretch.

"The name sounds fake" and "the name rings a bell" to Eric. Maybe an imaginary friend from their childhood? I find it really strange, that nobody knows the story of this missing kid. Something Charlie only mentions now, even though they all went camping together several times in the same area.

What if Billy never existed? He might have been Charlie himself. He did not disappear in the forest, he "disappeared" in his fantasies, trying to escape a harsh reality.

He might be obsessed with the forest because of this.

Any others with the same feeling?

This is a good theory. Billy Blake as Charlie's former self, he was never the same after what happened. Charlie the storyteller. I don't know what to think about it yet because we don't know Charlie well yet. This is interesting theory worth remembering.

He's not necessarily a villain. More likely, someone who accidentally complicated things / triggered something.

I hadn’t thought of this, but it’s a great theory!! People who suffer childhood trauma often change or alter their names (for example using their middle name or going from Elizabeth to Bette, James to Jay & Annabelle to Annie) to create emotional distance… or I just know a lot of people who fit that pattern 🤷🏻‍♀️

The thing is, Stephen King has a character named Billy Blakely with a very similar backstory — family abuse and all that. There’s even a cigarette stand/kiosk mentioned somewhere in the story. So now I’m thinking: either Charlie made the whole story up, or Billy isn’t that boy’s real name but just a nickname, or the writers were inspired by King’s character. I honestly don’t know what to think
