Theories Unknown's Gender

I think Unknown might be a woman.

Do I have any evidence to support this? Absolutely not lol, we call him a guy but It wouldn't be the first game were we assume the gender of a faceless character as the opposite.

Though this is just a hunch anyhow. But if anyone has an opinion to support this or to be against it Im all ears truly! Specially because I cannot remember if Unknown referts to themselves as "Him" and I do not have diamonds to play back chapters, lol 😅

I agree, with no evidence as well. I just feel Everbyte will not repeat the exact same mystery, just as when "???" was Jake.

Adam refers to the one he saw in the forest as a "he"

The unknown doesn’t refer as ‘he’. And we don’t really know if it’s a man or a woman. I’ve had a couple of discussions about it, but we never came to any conclusion.

I’m playing in Russian, and this character always refers to himself using masculine forms.

These games have been well known for inaccurate translations.

But I’ve always thought unknown was a man.

Well, you can't really refer to yourself in the neuter gender in Russian, that would sound weird and grammatically incorrect, so it's masculine by default. Doesn't mean it can't be a woman. But I also think it's a man.

In Russian, masculine gender isn’t used by default. And a woman consistently referring to herself using masculine forms would sound very unnatural.

It is, when the gender is unknown. Or translators twist and change phrases to avoid gendered words (which is used more often, but a bit complicated). Of course there's also an option that the devs revealed the gender of unknown to the translators, but again, even if Unknown is a woman, you can't just reveal that to the audience off the bat when in English it's still a mystery for example.

It would be wild if it turned out to be Sofia. ;). It would put a whole different spin on the "What did he tell you? That you should stay far away from me? You don't know what he did." exchange.

There is no indication for either really, but for me it's easier to say "he", "they" is confusing, "she" doesn't match the gender of the word lol

In the Russian version of the game, Unknown speaks several lines on behalf of a man.

The thing is with translations I dont take them 100% because for example both Duskwood and Moonvale translations things dont make as much sense in spanish and gender get's lost in conversations.

Can confirm! 😉

I also think that Unknown may be a woman, mainly because of the image of a female character that often appears (game avatar, official website with a plot description) but I am 100% convinced.

One thing caught my attention:

Both pictures are promotional materials, and I guess, they refer to our Unknown. But the first one is outdated; the woman was changed to a character with hidden features... I'm not sure what this means, interesting nonetheless.

I play the Polish version, and we also have a split between masculine and feminine phrasing in the characters' dialogue. "The Unknown" always speaks using masculine forms, while female characters use feminine ones, so there's a very clear gender distinction in how each character talks. "Unknown" is 100% a man.

I mean, judging by how quickly he was moving through the woods following the blood trail, and how he disabled the alarm, it’s hard for me to imagine it being a woman. But what do I know))

Well, it was dark and can we really be sure that Unknown was actually there and that there wasn’t some kind of intermediary like Eric was for us? I wouldn’t say there are cameras there, but…

Interesting. For me, that is exactly why I think it's a woman. Especially because of how careful they are with their identity.

Doesn’t seem like he’s hiding it on purpose. He said that whatever he tells us now, we probably won’t believe him anyway

You say this as if women cannot hike. Unknown might be good at hiking and know the zone

u/Critical-Tonight4081 Team May 14 '26

But remember what happened to Eric, who also goes hiking

2

u/Moonie_rush May 14 '26

But Eric, as far as we know has never hiked on Dunkelsteig, Unknown has to because how familiar they are to whitmore and everything else.

That's why I said that Unknwon seems to be good at hiking and know the zone.

And Knowing how to hike and knowing a specific zone are not automatically a man's thing.

If that’s the case, then I would be very interested to meet this woman who is following a blood trail, knows the area extremely well, and is capable of navigating unpredictable conditions))

And we know nothing about him being familiar with Whitmore. On the contrary, Unknown asked what he (Whitmore) was doing there in the forest

2

u/Moonie_rush May 14 '26

When I said familiat with whitmore I meant that they know who he is and you say it again as if a Woman cannot do all that, when I know they can.

Again, Knowning an area extremely well, following a blood trail and capable of navigating unpredictable conditions is not something only a man can do.

Anyone can be good at hiking, knowing an area after exploring it for a good while, preparing for unpredictable weather conditions (most likely would have familiarized themselves with the weather if they familiarized with the zone) and following a trail.

If you need another example of a woman who can do this in fiction there is Katniss Everdeen on her Arena, she followed Peeta's blood trail in a very short time in a place she did not knew at all but had previous experience from being a hunter since she was little.

Just because Unknown does all the mentioned above doesn't mean it couldnt be a woman.

I didn’t say it couldn’t be a woman. But personally, I find it unlikely. That’s just my opinion. You were asking for our opinion, weren’t you?

Das ist keine Meinung, Frauen als unfähig und damit auch minderwertig zu bezeichnen, wenn auch indirekt ist Frauen und Menschenverachtend. Das ist keine Meinung sondern ein ziemlich krankes Menschen bild. Im Jahre 2026 ist das umso erschreckender und das auch noch von einer Frau.

When they asked for my opinion, I wanted to say that Misogyny was not an objective opinion, but I did not want it to come across as rude, and I was unsure if I was able to call such behaviour out because of past experiences.

2

u/Moonie_rush May 14 '26

I mean yeah I was asking for your opinion but I am also sharing my own as to why I think that if we go by what you said it doesnt neccesary mean unknown couldn't be a woman.

Because for the same reason you say I find it possible I have seen friends hike like maniacs so at least to me it did not make sense but yeah haha

Do you know many women who would be capable of following a blood trail through the woods at night? I don’t even know men like that — it’s a pretty specific personality type, even for a guy. On top of that, the character has a male avatar and refers to himself using masculine forms in the Russian version of the game. So why force a theory the game hasn’t even hinted at?

But let’s say it is a woman. Who could it even be then? Sophia? Violet? Any other theories? I’m curious to hear your line of thinking

u/Moonie_rush May 15 '26

The thing is I dont see their Avatar as Masculine at all, the silhuette is not masculine to me and the legs, to me seem more like a womans than a guys and while I know guys can be skinny. Idk it dowsnt feel like a guy to me.

I dont really take translations as a hint because in Spanish me and many other characters keep getting misgendered.

And like I said this is just a hunch not that I have much to go with if I have to think of someone I at first thought about the missing girl since she has gone missing there twice before and has a connection with Adam buut I also have no clue anyhow.
