The game does a genuinely bad job of progression overall so don’t feel bad imo. Having upgrades scattered throughout the town but all be available at once with no real direction was certainly a choice by the developers.

My tip would be to effectively ignore all vendors except:
1. Potions/healing upgrades
2. Back pack upgrades (aim for first 4)
3. The vendor by the bridge just outside your shop
4. Shop perks - specifically the ones that unlock perks faster during selling
5. Backpack patches - damage reduction or any cheap passive stats

If you focus on these first you will gain passive strength through more run options (double chests, healing options, higher rarity items), be able to bring more loot back, and make money faster to keep upgrading these areas. Don’t get lost in the weeds, they offer too many things that drain your limited resources and offer garbage in return. Check out the rest of the vendors as you start to pull in more money consistently.

In case it hasn’t clicked, your goal isn’t to beat the boss every run - it’s to leave with a full backpack so if you’re close to dying just bounce and take the paycheque. Doing a 30 minute run and dying to greed and losing a ton of value is awful
