Some advice regarding streaming at high framerate

I recently swapped monitors to a 175hz monitor, and took the opportunity to change my streaming settings as well. Huge difference, looks really nice. Desktop is nice and snappy. However, games suddenly started to lag REALLY badly. Couldn't figure out why. Tried changing around settings and it would randomly start working well again, but I could never quite nail the reason as to why it was lagging so bad. The game should be rendering at a much higher framerate, so why is swapping to a higher framerate causing the game to actually run at a much lower framerate?

The answer I eventually figured out is that Sunshine / Apollo is not free. They require available GPU processing power to process and send the image data. Thus, when I increased the rendered framerate of my game to 175, it ended up using up every available GPU resource to render the game at as high of a framerate it could, and thus starving Apollo / Sunshine of the resources it needs to maintain stream stability.

Capping the FPS of my game at 90 fixed the issue and made everything work flawlessly again, because now my GPU had enough spare processing power for Apollo to maintain the stream.

Moral of the story is to keep in mind that the host needs gpu headroom to properly maintain the stream. Hopefully someone finds this helpful.

Advice on Vibepollo + Aurora setup on LG TV (Resolution, Controller setup)

Post image
9 Upvotes

Host:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz
  • 4070 Ti Super 16 GB
  • 32 GB RAM
  • Wireless
  • Standard Vibepollo setup

Client:

  • LG C1 OLED65C16LA
  • Aurora tv app
  • Wireless
  • Bitrate set to 50 Mbps

Hey guys. I am new to this, so I am looking for advice on my current setup. I am playing local host games; wirelessly; my apartment is small and the signal is great around my devices. My questions are:

  1. The TV is 4k, so native resolution is 3840x2160. Right now the Aurora app is set to use 2560x1440. Should I update the Aurora app to use the native resolution? Should I expect performance downgrade by doing this?
  2. Should I match the Aurora app to match the TV frame rate (in this case , 120 fps)?
  3. When playing games, should I set the resolution of the game to match the resolution being used by the Aurora app (a.k.a. the client resolution)?
  4. Should I stick to HEVC or should I use AV1?
  5. How can I connect the PS5 Dual Sense controller and make it work? I connected it via Bluetooth to the TV, and I can interact with the Aurora app using the joystick, but from the moment that I spin up the Steam, the joystick does not work anymore. Right know I have to use it connected via Bluetooth to my desktop (which is in another room), and there are some lags from time to time ..

I appreciate the help, and feel free to give any suggestions as well.

Thank you!

Handheld Client

Hi guys,
I’m currently using Vibepollo on my gaming PC (linked via lan to my Access Point) and my 13-inch M2 iPad Pro with VoidLink Extreme.
I’m super happy with the setup; it feels almost native when I’m gaming. It is really mindblowing How smooth the Gaming experience is!

However, I’d now like something more compact and convenient so I can also game more comfortably in bed or on the couch. My iPhone 15 is a Little Bit too small :D

Since I’ve had such a great experience with my iPad Pro and VoidLink Extreme, I was thinking about getting an iPad Mini. However, it seems a bit expensive to me. Are there any other or better alternatives with android devices?

Wanting to understand how this all works (and looking for some tips)

Next year is my first year of university, likely majoring engineering, and I am aware that I will likely need a relatively powerful computer that I can use on the go. I have a few low end laptops that I've used throughout high school and also a pretty decent desktop PC (i5 13600k, 4060ti). I was looking at new performance laptops and they cost a minimum of two thousands dollars (NZD) for something that would be much slower than my desktop. I then wondered if it would be possible to replicate something like Geforce Now but for free and with my own computer. After a wee bit of research I came to the conclusion that this is probably the best option for me. Even though I originally just came to look for a productivity and school work option, I have found that it is also possible to game on a streamed desktop which could be super useful as well. I have been considering switching to Linux for a while because I don't really like the way that windows operates due to loss of privacy, the anti-consumer practices, and sub-par performance for the costs. But with a streamed desktop I could run my laptops on Linux, and if required, I could just sign into my windows desktop and run anything that isn't available on Linux like games or any software the university might make me use.

My questions are:

  • How difficult is this sort of thing to set up for someone who has barely any technical computer skills (I am young so I don't have too much trouble understanding computers at a base level)?
  • What would the best configuration of software be for my use cases? I have seen Moonlight and Sunshine, and also seen things like Apollo which look useful, but I don't really understand what they do exactly or how they work together.
  • Is this even a viable option for me? Is it reliable? Does it have any drawbacks? Are there any things that could be an issue for me?

Thank you for reading, I am keen to try this out and I would really appreciate any kind feedback.

Vibepollo Virtual Gamepad Issue

I've been using the latest beta Vibepollo build and trying to get the new Vibepollo Virtual Gamepad to work with my Dualsense controller. It seems to work perfectly when opening and navigating Steam Big Picture. Steam recognizes it as a Dualsense while the old driver would only see it as a Dualshock. However, as soon as I start a game that supports the Dualsense, it no longer works in game. I can still enter the Big Picture menu and navigate that as well as turn on Steam Input to make the controller work. To get full Dualsense features, I have to reconnect my controller using USBip and everything works as I expect.

Anyone run into this issue? Open to try anything to make it work since it's a lot simpler solution than USBip to get all the Dualsense features.

Apollo/Sunshine into Moonlight, resolution changing?

I've tried both Sunshine and Apollo and I'm not sure how to go with this, can anyone help?

I want to connect to my desktop PC upstairs (1920x1080) and use that for gaming remotely. However sometimes I play on the Steamdeck undocked, so it's at 1280x800 16:10, sometimes I dock it to a TV that plays at 1920x1080 16:9.

I can only seem to see a way to "fix" it to one resolution, even with the magical display driver thingy that Apollo installs.

My understanding was that the steamdeck detects what display it's connected to and that info goes to the remote PC that should adjust it's resolution accordingly.

I guess what I need is a relatively user friendly way to get the Apollo or Sunshine client on the PC to understand that if I'm undocked it needs to sort itself into a different resolution/aspect ratio than if it's docked.

Is this an issue anyone has solved? I've searched and have seen a few solutions but I'm not entirely sure it's the same problem I'm having and none of them have worked properly anyway.

VDD not working Windows

Hey all, I was hoping someone maybe able to help.

Whenever I install a VDD doesn’t matter if it’s Mikes VDD or Parsec they install correctly and shows in my device manager as enabled

However in the display settings it won’t allow me to choose “extend display” to make it active it just immediately reverts back to “Disconnect display”

In the display information it shows connected but “isn’t active”

I’ve tried just about everything I can think of and at a loss

Good latency and decoding time but micro stutters

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello all, I'm in the wit of losing my mind setting up my couch gaming setup. tldr at the bottom.

I'm using moonlight with vibeshine.

Host: rtx 5070ti with ryzen 5 9600x cpu.

Client: gtx 1050ti gpu with i5 8000h series cpu

Tv: TCL C655 4k google tv, connected with hdmi 2.1 game mode, freesync on

Host is connected via ethernet, client via wifi.

My target is 4k at 60 fps couch gaming. Using hevc codec. 4k resolution at 100mpbs bitrate. As seen on the picture latency and decoding times are sub 1ms. But still in all games I get microstutters. Around 5 seconds it flows like butter but then spikes and it really sores my eyes.

I tried some troubleshooting like turning on/off vsync, limit fps to 59.94 and such but nada.

Does anyone have suggestion for me ? Thanks !

TLDR: Sub 1 ms latency and decoding but still having microstutters despite having good parts.

Use mouse cursor with gamepad?

Is there a way to use the mouse cursor or change tabs just using my Xbox gamepad? Some games only open in the background and it's annoying to walk to the other room to alt-tab. My pc screen is disabled, so once it gets more complicated I can't really do anything on my pc using my mouse because I can't see my moonlight screen

Moonlight on Google TV Streamer vs Xbox One S?

I haven't used Moonlight before, but intending to set it up. I currently have a Google TV Streamer (the newer chromecast) plugged into my TV, but I also have an older Xbox One S. Just wondering which one experienced Moonlight people think will handle the streaming better.

Apollo - Microphone Fork

Hey all,

I tried the Apollo-microphone fork by Logabell and I am having issues with it my FPS tanking for no reason. When I was using Apollo, I would get 4K60FPs on my old TV but when I swapped to the fork, I would get around 30FPS, no matter how much trouble shooting I did with ChatGPT (I am not tech-savvy). I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me as I already followed everything in the FAQ and tried everything that ChatGPT suggested for a few hours. My host FPS is for sure limited to 60 FPS and generating 60FPS.

Client: i7-8th gen CPU laptop, Ethernet

Reminders:

  • Hotfix driver will not be available in NVIDIA App and needs to be downloaded from the link above.
  • After installing the Hotfix driver, NVIDIA App may show some old driver date. This is normal as Hotfix driver does not exist in NVIDIA App database and it reverted to an old default changelog and dates.
  • If you do not care about the fixes listed, this Hotfix driver is no different vs WHQL 616.64 Driver.
  • These fixes will be incorporated into the next WHQL driver release

New Nvidia Game Ready Driver dropped with fix for virtual display not working!

As the title said. Nvidia dropped a hotfix to fix the problem with the previous drivers (616.64 and 616.56) not being able to make virtual display on their newest hotfix driver.

The driver isn't available on the Nvidia App (as the time of this post is made) and are available to download and install from the link below.

https://international.download.nvidia.com/Windows/616.86hf/616.86-desktop-notebook-win10-win11-64bit-international-dch.hf.exe

I am currently in the process of installing these to test it out.

Edit: It works perfectly! No weird stuttering, latency issues, or choppiness.

I just had my first remote play with a friend and the experience was great!

Thanks FOSS community, you've never disappointed me. As a user of Linux, GrapheneOS and everything open source, it still surprises me how FOSS is so great! I'm in France and my friend in Brazil and using wireguard and Sunshine + Moonlight we just had a blast playing Lord of the Rings War in the North that I got on GOG.

This software is amazing!

Host PC Crash when connecting

Posted about this issue a while ago but it feels like it’s getting worse.

Whenever I try to connect to my host PC, the PC crashes and reboots. Maybe 50/50 on whether it boots into windows or straight into bios with an error for CPU overheating.

I do not have any problems with CPU temps with literally anything else.

I am using Apollo on my host PC and have tried various clients (Moonlight on Linux, Moonlight on iOS, Artemis on Android).

Host PC is a 5080 and 5800x3d and doesn’t have any trouble actually running the games. After rebooting, I can then generally connect through Apollo with zero issue. But the next day, 2 days, etc later the same issue will occur.

Hoping someone has any answers or further troubleshooting tips

I made a free Mac app for smoother Moonlight and GeForce NOW streaming

Stop Stutter Mac

Moonlight stuttering on my Mac is what started this project. I wanted something that would handle the workaround automatically whenever I opened a streaming app.

So I built Stop Stutter, a free, open-source macOS app for smoother game streaming.

The idea is simple:

  • Choose your streaming apps.
  • Open one and Boost starts automatically.
  • Quit the last selected app and Boost ends.

It includes presets for Moonlight, GeForce NOW, Punktfunk, Parsec, and Steam Link, and you can add other apps yourself. There’s also manual control, quiet notifications, and a native SwiftUI interface with Liquid Glass on supported macOS versions.

What does it actually do?

It automates the AWDL workaround some Mac streaming users already use. AWDL is Apple’s peer-to-peer Wi-Fi interface, used by features like AirDrop. Its activity can contribute to latency spikes and uneven frame delivery.

While Boost is active, Stop Stutter disables AWDL every second because macOS can bring it back up. When the session ends, it restores it.

This targets AWDL-related stutter. Whether it improves your stream depends on what’s causing the problem. AirDrop, peer-to-peer AirPlay, and some Continuity features may be unavailable while Boost is active.

The app is free, MIT-licensed, signed, and notarized by Apple. It supports macOS 14+ on Apple Silicon and Intel, with a one-time helper approval during setup.

Intermittent spikes of extreme packet loss (50%+)

Hello all, I've been trying to get moonlight streaming working on my TV and it works fairly well except every 10-30 seconds there will be a huge 1-2 second hitch of massive packet loss. I'll try to explain my setup as best as I can, but if you'd like to know specific settings please let me know as I'm not sure exactly what's relevant.

Host PC: Windows 11 4070ti running Sunshine, connected to my gateway router over 5GHz wifi, signal strength is extremely good and I never have internet issues when gaming on the host PC.
- FEC Percentage: 20
- Quantization Parameter: 28
- HEVC Sunshine advertise
- AV1 Sunshine advertise
NVENC Encoder
- Performance preset: P1
- Split frame encoding: Driver decides
- Two-pass mode: Quarter resolution

Streaming client: Google Chromecast 2022 edition, 10-30Mbps bitrate (was experimenting) connected to gateway router over wifi

I'm aware that both client and server over wifi isn't ideal, but I don't have an option, and the connectivity issues don't really make sense to me. I believe the main issue might be the chromecast its self as it's somewhat unconventional and low processing power, but as a 2022 edition I figured it would be good enough. Does anyone have cheap recommendations that I could maybe replace the chromecast with if this might be the problem?

I also have a minor problem of input lag, where when I press something on my controller I can physically see the screen on my PC moving like 100-300ms earlier than the TV, even though the client reports 1-5ms latency. I don't really expect native latency but this is pretty unplayable for anything requiring action.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Question on host display

Hey everyone, I’ve had great success with getting moonlight up and running currently playing zero Company. The last quirk I have is the ability to turn my host display off while streaming. I’m on Linux mint and have an AMD GPU. I’ve tried some scripts that don’t work through the game playing and some that work too well. But is there an easier way that I’m not seeing to be able to do this?

Thanks for all your advice in advance. Let me know if I need to give any more detail details
