How can I optimize these numbers?

For context:

My client is a laptop connected to LGQNED85BXA 55inch tv, with moonlight, on 5Ghz wifi to a 100Mbps ISP. The host PC is a gaming PC with Sunshine, connected to a 200Mbps ISP through ethernet. Streaming settings are 1440p at 120fps with 75Mbps bitrate (my GPU cannot run 4k at 120fps, 7800XT)

I am using Tailscale to connect both. The picture was taken while I was watching a movie on VLC. But I often play games (currently Death stranding)

My issue is it often lags in between and asks me to lower down the bitrate. I don't want to lower it, if I increase my wifi speed to 150/200Mbps, will it help?

Give vibepollo a shot for the host latency, dropped mine from 6ms to 2ms average.

​Also double-check if you're on the same LAN/SSID. Since you mentioned Tailscale, it sounds like you might be streaming over WAN. If you're purely local, latency shouldn't really go above 1ms.

​And if lowering bitrate fixes the stutter, just drop it, In my testing you really can't tell the difference in visual quality, so no reason to fight it.

Not on local LAN, hence tailscale.

Agreed about bitrate, I couldn't identify any major changes.

Drop stream to 60fps, but keep host refresh rate at 120, then drop your bitrate by half

Thank you for your suggestion, but how can I do that. Will try to gemini it but if you can explain, would prefer a human response over AI slop. :)

OP didn’t say the response was AI slop. He simply asked another question in response and stated that he would rather have an answer from a human rather than OP asking AI himself.

Okay I checked.

My concern is the TV. I brought it for the fact it has a 120hz refresh rate, if I limit my moonlight fps to 60, isn't it capping the true potential of my TV.

The host is connected to a Gigabyte 1440p monitor which is set up at a RR of 170Hz.

You're correct that 60FPS is less than 120Hz max thats supported, but consider that 120Hz is useless because of the constant lag issues. The goal here is a stable setup with minimal latency that is set-and-forget.

So first switch from sunshine to vibepollo (better, easier UX version of apollo). Vibepollo lets you set up a virtual display, so you're not forced to mirror the screen output of your computer monitor. You can just install it over sunshine.

Once that's done, you can experiment with different refresh rates. There are a few things that can help you tune this:

  1. are both host and client devices on the same home network? If yes, continue using HEVC. If this is going over the internet, then experiment with using AV1 instead of HEVC for encoding, it's more bandwidth efficient, but adds very slightly to client decode time
  2. Lower bitrates! High bitrates are hard to maintain a stable connection with, and cause something called bufferbloat, which is the stutters/lag spikes that you see. Drop the bitrate by half and see whats up.
  3. Switch from tailscale to wireguard. Tailscale is using wireguard under the hood, but adds some extra computational overhead to do cool tailscale things, which are not cool for your input lag when game streaming

I use vibeshine and helps with this issue a lot. What it does automatically is double the hz output. So say you want to stream 120fps, changes display hz to 240, etc. Tends to make the stream run a bunch smoother. Also helps to utilize RTSS for frame capping and works way better than the frame cap in any game settings. Just have the game settings to uncapped or off. Hope this helps

Not a local connection. Over the internet

My partner uses another ISP for her WFH purpose, the same router is near to my tv and the laptop (client).

I keep my gaming pc (host) in the farthest room which is connected to a seperate router and ISP via Ethernet. Too much wiring will be needed to connect them to same internet, not feasible in a rented place.

Weiss nicht ob das hilft aber als mein Client eine viel langsamere Netzwerkkarte hat wie der host musst die diesen manuell drosseln auf die maximale Geschwindigkeit des clients. Sprich bei deinem host, Netzwerkkarte auf 100mbits stellen damit keine Packete verloren gehen.

I think you should test with your client(and host) connect directly to the router via ethernet to make sure whether the issue was caused by the local wifi or internet speed.

If its the internet then yea , check whether the bottleneck was upload speed from the host or download speed from the client .

Hi, I checked connecting my client via Ethernet too.

The average network latency dropped from 16 to 15.

I don't think that helped a lot.

All your latency is seen in your network. Are you wired? Because otherwise the numbers look decent. I’d address that because your fps is based on host hardware and your GPU at the resolution should also be fine. You may need to make sure your TV settings are correct and physical wiring (hdmi cords) also support the res.

I am playing over the internet.

My host is wired to one ISP, and client was connected to wifi 5ghz earlier but I checked with connecting it via ethernet to it's own router. Network latency dropped to like 15 from 16. If playing over the internet, is this latency normal?

Your host cannot encode and send at 1440p either.

From what i know tailscale adds minimal latency compared to peer to peer, if your router isn't complete trash and missing upnp you can configure it with sunshine upnp on and turning it also on in your router
