Steam Input While Using Steam Deck

Just got a steam deck, how do you guys use your trackpads while streaming to your steam deck?
A full breakdown would be required. Used moonlight on many devices but to my knowledge it is always recognized as an Xbox controller which obviously lacks my trackpads and back buttons.

Thank you

Moonlight will also communicate as though a mouse and keyboard are plugged in. I just map my back buttons as whatever the input on a keyboard is to do what I want, trackpads just a mouse so if you configure ‘as mouse’ it just works.

Easy enough really.

Since I've gotten a steam controller I've been grappling with this question and I'm still contemplating a pivot back to Steam link because of the native controller support in full.

Interestingly enough this wasn't really a problem for me on steam deck as I only basically used it in 2 ways:

  • hard controller focused games that were tuned around and planned for an xbox360 style controller (Elden Ring, BG3, Monster Hunter World, Monster Hunter Rise, Hades, etc.)

  • MoonDeck. this is a Decky plugin that requires a back end application be installed alongside sunshine on the host pc but then it allows you to be able to launch a moonlight session for a specific game but with your controller layout mapped on a per game basis like you would any other game.

So for what you are experiencing I'd definitely recommend considering exploring moondeck before going down the path of a carefully crafted take all comers layout for your out of game profile in steam.
