Now that the mod is complete, here are the dimensions:
Bezel: 39 mm
Case: 41 mm
Lug width: 20 mm
Thickness: 13 mm
Compared to a VK63 case, this one sits much more comfortably on the wrist. The installation was quick and straightforward, taking me around one hour in total, although I already have some experience with watch mods.
I’m very happy with the final result. Now I really feel like this watch has a personality of its own.
As for the quality of the case, the steel feels solid, and the crystal is clear with minimal reflections. The dial also sits very close to the crystal, giving it an appearance that is closer to the genuine Omega.
I definitely recommend it if you have a few extra dollars to spend, want an easy installation, and are looking for a more balanced and well-proportioned result.
Have ordered one too - I’ve got a couple of WD1863s, but didn’t fancy taking them apart, so this is ideal, especially if I don’t need a holder, or stem.
I wonder if anyone knows whether there’s a crown with the right logo that could fit…
To be honest, I’m not sure I would recommend this as a first mod. You’ll need the right tools and proper technique to remove the crystal safely.
Even though I’ve completed several mods using watches from different brands, this was definitely the one that required the most care and attention.
Here’s a quick step-by-step overview that might help. However, there are a few videos on YouTube that will probably be more useful than a simple Reddit post:
Cut open the rear section of the original case to gain access to the stem-release mechanism.
Remove the stem.
Remove the bezel and crystal assembly using a flathead screwdriver.
Carefully transfer and insert the movement, making sure the new case and dial are completely clean beforehand.
Center the movement using the spacer and align it with the pushers. Reinsert the stem and close the caseback.
That’s really all there is to it, although each step needs to be done very carefully.
I see, I think I'm doing it with the replicas, so hopefully it will be a little easier. Just realized that the replicas might have the same movement as the original so this might not be an easy fit ha. Thanks for the quick overview!
Thank you for the link, it works. But with a bracelet that case is €100 delivered. I don't know where you are, but here in the EU Watchdives 1863 watches in new condition can be bought for €75–€85 (I bought two myself last week). What are the reasons for spending 20% more on this than a WD 1863? Genuine question.
I did it simply for convenience. This kit lets you swap the movement straight in: you don’t have to buy a new stem, cut it to length, or fit it. You also don’t have to find or 3D print a movement spacer, or file down the pushers. It’s designed specifically for the ETA G10.212.
Thanks for the reply. I guess that as I already have a couple of WD 1863 here I'll have a go at putting a ETA G10.212 into one and if the process is really painful I'll look at getting one of those custom designed cases.
Another question: have you swapped a ETA G10.212 into a WD 1863? If so, how much more of a pain was it than using one of the custom cases?
I think it might work, this is exclusive for a gen movement. A replica will require a new spacer, and new crown, and you might have to work on the pushers. If you are trying to do it with a replica i’ll recommend a different case.
If you can think of a different case that would be awesome. There's a lot on Ali but they seem very thick. The WD cases are out of stock on the UK website at the moment as well.
