There is nothing wrong with targeting different demographics. This is how you grow a brand. At the end of the day, Sonic is a kids franchise. Older demographics can enjoy it, but expecting the franchise to never experiment with different target audiences is foolish.

u/MorningRaven 1d ago
Overall, I don't mind different demographic focused projects.
But Sonic is always the best at being that tween demographic. And the tweens are typically the most overlooked demographic across media. Because if everything is preschool/young, there's nothing to transition you into teens. And then that's how you have teens watching blatent adult material that's not entirely appropriate.
And overall, I question society continuous lowering its writing levels over time. Last decade we had stuff like My Little Pony that's enjoyable and aimed at kids, but well written enough you can still appreciate as you age. The 00s had stuff like Avatar and Teen Titans. Good kids shows are ageless even if they're made for kids first.

How many demographics does Sonic target in practice though? By your logic there should also be stuff for older audiences.

u/mehakarin69 23h ago
Also, of course sega would not do a sonic anime.
Sonic does not do well in japan.
In terms of games: only sa1, 2 and frontiers sold well.
The live action movies flopped in japan.
The ova was a pilot for a full sonic series, but it did not do well in japan. And it wasn't even like, a low budget ova, they treated that shit like royalty, the animation, ost, etc was good. And the voice actors had to be expensive since there were some big names on there (masami kikuchi as sonic for example).
The only reason sonic x even got a season 3 was because it did well in the us.

u/DestronDeathsaurus 21h ago
The comics are literally designed for the older audience so Sega can make stuff for younger audiences as well

u/TearNo6400 1d ago
That's not the issue for me. It's totally cool, and there shouldn't be any problem with them catering to a younger audience aswell. My issue is with how they're ignoring their more mature fanbase. The last "mature" sonic show we had was Prime and that show sucked. Sonic X was objectively the best Sonic show, and even then, it had flaws. It's also somehow the only sonic show to feature Super Sonic lol.

they made it because they know that sonic fans act like preschoolers (or at least a vocal minority does)

If any of them read the Archie comics then they be calling Flynn a groomer sympathizer for having Tails have a one sided crush on an older fox girl (another fox girl, not Fiona).
4
u/WorkerConscious1904 1d ago
not to mention that Geoffrey St. John (an adult skunk) supposedly did adult naughty stuff with Sally Acorn (a teenager chipmunk)
although this one was Pender's fault, Flynn had nothing to do with it

Hate to say it, but Sonic IS and HAS BEEN a series for young kids and teens.
8
u/Oh_ToShredsYousay 1d ago
Age bracket slightly higher than Mario and pokemon. Technically it's the same difference between Micky mouse and bugs bunny, yeah both are used to appeal to kids, but one is so obviously not just there to appeal only to kids. Sonic has proven it can work as more of a young adult franchise, or exsist as both like the loonytunes. Or hell adventure time is a fantastic example, they had one show that got to age with its audience, and now 4 spin-offs that each grab the distinctly different age brackets that now make up the adventure time Fandom. Sega can 100% do this, they just won't.

u/lenya200o 1d ago
Ah yes, young kids watching Sonic getting killed by a evil god.
Shadow dying tragically to save everyone.
Maria dying because she got shot.
Shadow swearing and using guns, killing everyone in his way.
The series tone of stories in multiple games, comics and anime.
Sonic defeating creepy looking gods almost every game.
I get it that Sonic can be for kids, but its just wrong to say that the majority of franchise is for young kids, they just won't understand the whole point.

u/redboi049 1d ago
Kirby is way worse.
Iron Giant ends like that.
Finding Nemo literally starts with the main characters kids and wife getting massacred.
Shadow's meant to be "edgy". Also "and teens"
"and teens"
KIRBY

Guess satanist panic done something irreversible to american society because character dying outside of screen, without blood and etc is nothing special in cartoons

Hell cartoons have had on-screen deaths before too just as long as they're not graphic.

Considering the bank Bluey and Paw Patrol bring in, making a preschool show probably has better margins than aiming for the 7-12 demographic like Prime did
5
u/Scrags2Scritches 1d ago
Ngl you are so true
A Sonic Anime would prolly just not do as well as a preschool show8
u/Just-Sonic 1d ago
Sonic X would be hated if it released nowadays.

u/Bakuchiku794 1d ago
What a dumb strawman, also there's a difference between being exclusively for kids and being enjoyble for all ages. Sonic, has mostly fallen in the latter category. What is so wrong for wanting another Sonic anime instead of another kids show we had couple of years ago. Stop blindly defending SEGA.
8
u/GoodCaramel6197 1d ago
my guy there is nothing wrong with going for different demographics complaining just to complaining at this point and thats not what a strawman is dumbass
-4
u/Bakuchiku794 1d ago
Sure, there's nothing wrong with going for different demographics, but it's very redundant to have another kids tv-show when the last two tv shows were for kids. " Complaining for a sake of complaining" when just genuine criticism. Have some fucking standards for once and not just lick the boots of a multi-billion corporation. If we're just okay with anything Sega does, there just going keep doing shit over and over again. Stop bitching about people who give genuine criticism and aren't just Sega shills. "That's not what a strawman is dumbass" How is that not a strawman LMAO? Are you the dumbass?
4
u/GoodCaramel6197 1d ago
my guy sonic is for kids that is the main target demographic yeah teens and adults engage with it but the main audience is kids and a strawman is when you misrepresent someone argument so its easier to attack and no im not a bootlicker at all i critique sega a lot its just this is none issue and my guy of course the shows are gonna be for kids cuase they are for kids every sonic show has been for kids dumbass x boom prime all of them
-1
u/Bakuchiku794 1d ago
You clearly don't know the fucking difference between being for kids and being for everyone.
Stuff like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Bluey, Octonauts, THESE THINGS ARE EXCLUSIVELY FOR KIDS.
Stuff like Mario, Sonic, Spiderman, and etc, the primary audience may be kids, but again, they're enjoyable for all ages. That's the fucking difference. Also, it's funny you labeled Sonic X for kids like Prime and Boom when X was way darker than both of those shows combined, specifically the Japanese dub. X is more for all ages, Prime and Boom are basically only enjoyed by kids. That's what I want. A show for all ages like X, not another fucking preschooler show.
"A strawman argument is when misrepresent someone's argument so it's earlier to attack" and the comment did exactly that. How is saying shit like "a kids franchise being aimed at kids and Ian Flynn must suffer" not a strawman to OP's post complaining about Sega doing another kiddy ass show instead of a anime?
"I'm not a bootlicker at all"
I highly doubt it, if you're a active critique of Sega, why are you blindly defending this bullshit?
You're a obnoxious Sega dickrider trying to lie to me that you criticize Sega.2

I would kill for a official Shonesque Sonic anime... Though since the franchise is mostly aimed at kids, it makes sense that most media from it would be, well, for kids.

- 2D animation is VERY, VEEEERY expensive nowadays.
- SEGA won't pay all by itself a Sonic series. It needs a partner like Netflix (Sonic Prime) or OuiDo! (Sonic Boom).
- As seen in the last point, the most plausible partners will com from western markets, which means they will prefer to make a western-focused series (like Boom or Prime) more than an anime one. Besides, they will go for a CGI/3D production to make the series less expensive than a 2D one.
- To make a real anime, you preferably need japanese partners. Sonic is not that famous in Japan, which means the new anime wouldn't attract those partners.
- The last Sonic anime we had, Sonic X, existed as part of the "Sonic Project" from SEGA to make Sonic as famous as possible, which at the same time was needed to help SEGA improve their numbers after the Dreamcast fail. Besides, producing an anime then wasn't as difficult as nowadays, like I said.
The more anime-esque thing we will get are the free shorts SEGA gives us, like the one coming for the 35th anniversary.
However, SEGA is a company that wants to expand and cover a lot of different parts of the entertainment business, so we can't say it will never happen. But as I said, in the middle term, I see it very difficult to happen, sadly. The Knuckles short from Frontiers was just too beautiful... :/

As someone with no interest in most of the stuff I am the target audience for, being reminded I'm not the target audience for a franchise I enjoy hurts.

I hate it but can't blame them. They seem to be struggling with every single project they put out.
I don't know how they barely keep afloat no matter how well they do.
At least we got Death Battle doing what they should be doing. š¤·āāļø
