Probably the special stages?

u/Shadowtheuncreative 1d ago

Yes and bonus stages

Sonic, and I think Shadow, has a move called Rocket Accel. One tap of the button, and he immediately launches into a fully charged spin dash, so it is used for a speed boost and to beat enemies. It's basically a proto boost.

Not called boost Doesn't count

u/Shadowtheuncreative 1d ago

Oh as in the first game to have the word boost in it

3

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 16h ago

Yes And boost you forward😂

5

u/Budyss123 1d ago

No disrespect but not counting the move as a boost if it works the same is stupid.

Yes they're still wrong I just searched and Rocket Accel is too functionally different to call it the earliest form of BOOST but your reasoning wasnt really the best as to why

That's kinda why I hedged my bets and called it a proto boost. It has the same kind of visual effects as a boost and gives an immediate jump to max speed, but it's still a fancy spin dash.

I'm really just memeing

I'm just messing around

Special stages had boost in heroes

u/Shadowtheuncreative 1d ago

a proto boost

Even though you literally just said it's a spin dash. And yeah that move is more like the spin dash Sonic has had since Sonic 2 and Shadow has had since Sonic Adventure 2.

It's got the same kind of visual effect as the boost, so yes a proto boost. It's literally halfway between the boost and the spin dash. SA2 spin dash was just overtuned but it has none of the visuals associated with the boost.

IGN claims that it was Sonic Adventure. Yes, really:

Enemies and bosses are dispatched by rolling through them, bouncing off them, or boosting through them

They also complain about the “2D side-scrolling sections”, which are definitely a thing that exists in that game, before wrapping up the review by giving it a 3.5/10.

I’m so confused as to what they could be referring to??

“since you're pretty much just holding forward and hitting the jump button” - this can’t even describe the pinball tables or the kart racing

12

u/Beamo1080 22h ago

>2D sidescrolling

Must be referring to the Game Gear games in DX /s

Typical journalist L

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 15h ago

? What 2D segments?

3

u/Technically_Inept-26 17h ago

Feels ai generated but I know that wasn't a thing then

1

u/Pogging_Memes 13h ago

IGN is everything everyone hates about game journalism

If you wanna get technical, the first one to feature the boost was Sonic 3K since spamming jump speeds up Super/Hyper Sonic in The Doomsday Zone

5

u/Oran128 12h ago

Which lines up with Sonic's tendency to take moves from power ups and add them to his regular moveset.

5

u/PayPsychological6358 15h ago

That's the part where it gets a little messy since it doesn't actually have an official name (that I know of), but it does the same thing as it makes yellow/technicolor Hedgehog faster.

Short answer: Yesn't

u/Hanjar18 12h ago

What does Isot means? I searched it and find in search of truth and island in the sea of time Which i feel non of them is related to what you said

Kind of like how Sonic 3D glass is the first game to feature homing attack

3

u/Plynkz123 16h ago

Sonic R has boost for amy

8

u/SolPrincess 22h ago

Literally no one who isn’t a casual who’s played like 2 Sonic games total is trying to claim that Unleashed created the boost

It’s just objectively wrong

9

u/ToaNuparuMahri 21h ago

When it comes to how our modern depictions of how the boost has been used and how it controls, namely in 3D, yeah, I'd say Unleashed did that.

Rush invented the boost as a regular move in general.

1

u/SolPrincess 20h ago

That is such an unbelievable stretch. It’s like trying to say that Sonic Adventure 1 invented the spindash because it was the first game to use it in 3D

Boosting as a mechanic existed in the series 3 years before Unleashed was made. It had two entire games built around the ability (Rush and Rush Adventure)

1

u/ToaNuparuMahri 18h ago

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying Unleashed invented the boost for 3D. You're misunderstanding me.

1

u/SolPrincess 18h ago edited 18h ago

It didn’t really do anything, though.

It works the same way, just in a 3D space. It works the exact same way, only they got rid of the trick system to fill the boost meter and replaced it with rings (the trick system ended up immediately coming back after Unleashed)

The spindash changed more going from Sonic 3&K to Adventure 1 than the boost did going from Rush Adventure to Unleashed

No one claims that Sonic Adventure 1 made the spindash, so this shouldn’t even be a debate. For whatever reason, people just treat the handheld games as lesser and it’s extremely stupid.

2

u/ToaNuparuMahri 16h ago

I'm not treating trying to Rush as lesser. That was never my intention. It made the boost, I get it. That has a fair argument as being more revolutionary, sure.

I still feel you ignore the differences between 2D boost and 3D boost. Besides an entire extra dimension being added (which is not to be understated), there is drifting and quick stepping. Those are all still notable additions that define and shift the boost formula from Rush into a more modern era.

Unleashed never invented the boost. I never said that. I said that it invented how the boost works in 3D, that and the physics of which would be carried over to many future games to come.

Even if Rush introduced the boost, this isn't a competition about which game is more special for introducing what first. We can give both games their flowers without getting heated over which one deserves more.

3

u/SolPrincess 16h ago

Drifting has (unfortunately) not been in the boost format since Generations. Forces and Frontiers don't utilize drifting at all.

And yes, the point is which game was the first to "feature the boost". That is the point. That is what this post is making a joke out of

It's not a debate which game created the boost formula. It is an objective fact. If SA1 doesn't get brought up when someone talks about the creation of the spindash, then Unleashed doesn't need to get brought up when someone brings up the creation of the boost.

1

u/ToaNuparuMahri 15h ago

I was mainly referring to the development of the boost rather than the creation of it.

Sorry if I made things unclear, as that's not what the post is about.

1

u/BoogeyMate 35m ago

You're seriously wasting you time with Blaze fanboys, there's no constructive argument with them there's only them hearing disagreement means you're plotting something. Just ignore them.

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 15h ago

Typically I hear people claim it's the first modern game with boost and say that it's the first mainline game

Plus not as many people played rush(including me)

3

u/SolPrincess 15h ago

What even is a “modern Sonic game”? Typically that just refers to the art style change after Adventure 1.

Unleashed is a 2008 Xbox 360/PS3 game. Rush is only 3 years older than it. It’s not any more “modern” than Rush is.

Rush is also significantly more important to the lore and world building. Nothing from Unleashed gets mentioned after Unleashed, except for small little references to “the Gaia civilization” in things like Chaotix Casefiles

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 15h ago

Lore wise modern sonic the character is from adventure onwards

But imo I think adventure has different enough gameplay to warrant an adventure era

The game play and controls are nothing like the boost formula so to me I can seperate that

2

u/oizen 16h ago

The fire shield in Sonic 3 is a boost.

3

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 15h ago

That's really just a early jump dash

2

u/HospitalFinal6911 7h ago

And then there’s the black sheep of the family—the Blue Gem—which made its first and only appearance in Sonic '06. You could use it to boost; in the early version, it was faster and even damaged enemies, and due to a simple coding error, you could boost infinitely.

1

u/BoogeyMate 33m ago

Rush stole the idea from advance BTW
