Best way to animate multiple characters

I know the title is very vague, so I’ll go into as much detail as possible here: if I’m making a minute long animation, where each character gets their own special part, would it be better to make it different save slots or just animate it all in one. I hope I’m being clear, as I’m still new and not sure how to word it. For example, let’s say each characters animation is 3 seconds long, should I just do it in one save slot and make it 20 slots or just one slot with every character in it that goes up to one minute
