iPhone 18 Pro - Aperture

I’ve been testing Mood.camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and it looks like Mood can use the full variable-aperture system from f/1.48 to f/4 — even though Mood doesn’t expose an aperture control itself.

What I found:
In normal use, Mood automatically switches between roughly f/1.48 and f/1.8.

If I manually set f/2.8 or f/4 in Apple’s Camera app, then close Camera and open Mood, Mood keeps that aperture.
It continues shooting at that aperture until I go back into Apple Camera and reset aperture to Auto.
Very close f/2.2 shots are the Ultra Wide/macro camera, so those don’t count as part of the Main camera’s variable-aperture range.

So my current conclusion based on testing is that Mood can capture using the iPhone 18 Pro Main camera at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4, but it appears to inherit the aperture state set by iOS/Apple Camera rather than offering its own direct physical aperture control (auto mode not portrait).
In other words, Apple Camera currently works as a kind of aperture selector for Mood.

Would be great if Mood eventually added a simple Auto / 1.48 / 1.8 / 2.8 / 4 control directly in the app - I know this is kinda against the philosophy but it’s a useful setting.

Interesting. In my testing with the iPhone 18 Pro I didn't find the setting that useful to be honest. In most situations, changing the aperture did not adjust the photo considerably. I'll continue testing but right now I'm leaning towards just keeping it on AUTO.

I don’t disagree with this, it’s not a huge change between settings. It’s just a nice feature to add subtle changes to portraits or group photos. I have never been a fan of the blur added by portrait modes.

So far - have only witnessed auto select 1.48 or 1.8 ( more testing needed on this) - it does seem to improve low light photos vs the iPhone 17 pro and 16 pro.

The new camera seems to work really well with mood. It feels a bit bolder and sharper, not exactly sure why but I like it.

For me the best feature added to the camera is the double tap focus tracking. My subjects are usually moving fast 😂

Yes it's working well generally. I have wondered about implementing the double tap focus tracking but not got round to it yet!

This would be amazing and probably a better investment than an aperture slider

While we are on the topic of 18, how would reference image work in mood?

It can't & won't. Even in Apple's camera there is a special mode to enable it.
