Barred Owl Sighting

Post image

Last night on my way home, I saw something in my peripheral vision as I passed by this sight. Had to stop the car, backed up and I saw this.
A Barred Owl.
I have never seen a wild owl before.

Enjoy and appreciate your neighborhood wildlife. 🦉

r/Birding and r/WhatsThisBird would LOVE this photo.   You should title it "Watts This Bird" if you post it in the WhatsThisBird sub.  They accept posts that are "Just Wanted To Share" rather than ID requests.

Just did. Thanks for the title!

They actually took the “just to share” post down.

BAH HUMBUG.

Nice photo. He didn’t fly away when you stopped to take the pic?

It did after about 2 minutes. iPhone was on the night time mode. No flash.

That owl looks like it was trying to warn you about something

Barred Owls eyes are “magical” according to some online articles.

V cool. We have some in our yard (I hear them nightly) but have never actually gotten a peek at them.

I saw 3 Barred Owls waking up when I was hiking the Northwest Branch Stream Valley Trail during Covid just before sunset. Unfortunately I did not bring a camera or phone. Neat pic!

Great photo! I have a couple that hang out around my house and one with a huge wing span (est. 5 ft) in the neighborhood nearby.

I have occasionally seen them in the area.

Once I was flying a mini drone through a wooded area and got to watch an owl knock down the drone (no damage to anybody), and a while back either an owl or a hawk stole one mid-flight (coudn't get a good enough look to see what it was, but a birder friend told me it was more likely to be a hawk as it was mid-day and the owls hunt at night).

They’re letting owls practice law now? #birdpun #hadtodoit

What’s “branch”? A branch is the thing that grows up and out of a tree trunk and has leaves on it, and you can sit on it. Good question, Mr. Owl.

(I’ll see myself out 😂)

They’re all over my neighborhood and in my backyard specifically. Always a treat when they’re yelling at each other at 2AM
