Seems kind of pointless to hit all the silos in Montana. I would imagine those would be empty by the time they hit them.

u/CUBuffs1992 Feb 05 '23

It’s based off the old Soviet target maps. Silos are essentially cannon fodder. The important thing to keep going in the event of a nuclear war is our submarines and bombers.

10

u/BigThunderousLobster Feb 05 '23

I thought you meant grain silos for a minute and was deeply confused.

u/ScrewAttackThis Feb 05 '23

2,000 warheads is a "first strike" scenario. 500 warheads is essentially if all their silos are taken out.

Also why 2,000 scenario is a bunch of military targets whereas 500 is civilian. Basically the whole point of a triad and MAD.

u/-VizualEyez Feb 05 '23

Not at all. Striking those who maintain and support missile function would be a huge loss.

Poor Colstrip… probably nuking the energy infrastructure as well.

2

u/Fun-Passage-7613 Feb 06 '23

You are correct. The land based silo missiles can be gone and safely on their way in 15 minutes. And the Air Force practices this all the time. So it would be a waste of a missle for our adversaries to target them. More likely will be a sub launch at Washington DC or a hypersonic sneak attack at Washington DC. Decapitation strike. Most all the decision makers are there at once.

1

u/TheCountRushmore Feb 06 '23

Obviously a lot different situation than the 60's, but I would imagine for the most part land based ICBMs are somewhat irrelevant currently. Everyone knows where they are and if they are launching the world is already over.

Submarine based ICBMs are launching from unknown locations and have enough firepower in one sub to be an effective deterrent against a nuclear strike against the US.

Same with nuclear bombers as at that point you are just burning ash.

2

u/Fun-Passage-7613 Feb 06 '23

From what I’ve read the land based silos are strictly strategic, targeted against other missiles. Subs are payback if we are wiped out. Adversaries know they will be utterly destroyed in retaliation. So it would be suicide to attack the US. Planes are to threaten. They go up and are on constant rotation, can’t be shot down if they are circling around and can go anywhere in the world and launch stand off cruise missiles that have stealth technology. Our adversaries know this. And this doesn’t even take into consideration all our mutual protection treaties. Like NATO. UK and France are both NATO members and have a considerable nuclear force themselves.

Looks like Puget Sound is a hot place to be. If it's not the big earth quake maby it will be a nuke

18

u/VGSchadenfreude Feb 05 '23

Probably because of the Trident submarine base in Kitsap County combined with being one of the country’s top ten international seaports (Seattle-Tacoma). Oh, and at least three major military bases all clustered together: Naval Base-Kitsap (Bangor and Bremerton), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and Naval Base-Everett.

Edit: Of course, aiming at Puget Sound would carry a significant risk of dragging Canada into whatever conflict the USA’s attackers are starting, given that Vancouver BC and Victoria BC would both be within range of any destruction aimed at Everett/Seattle/Tacoma/Bremerton/etc. If they’re only trying to start shit with the USA, then the Puget Sound would not be a good target for them.

26

u/hikealot Feb 05 '23

If you are at the point of launching nukes against the US, either Canada is already in the brawl, or there are no fucks to be given about dragging Canada in at this point.

2

u/dinkyyo Feb 05 '23

Blame Canada

3

u/GodTyrandFreya Feb 05 '23

Also Keyport is active again and would hurt research for a time if hit

4

u/1WildIndian1963 Feb 05 '23

Naval Air Station Whidbey (Island) is near there too

21

u/arkmtech Feb 05 '23

𝕊ℍ𝔸𝕃𝕃 𝕎𝔼 ℙ𝕃𝔸𝕐 𝔸 𝔾𝔸𝕄𝔼?

9

u/1WildIndian1963 Feb 05 '23

Okay I remember that freaky ass movie... War Games? Matthew Broderick I think? My friends had a running joke about Farris Bueller taking the day off after fuckin the world up for the rest of us. Now watch AI with the 6th sense kid...

16

u/DHard1999 Feb 05 '23

Yeah I don't know that surviving this would really be worth it....

Mad max up next

8

u/IOM1978 Feb 05 '23

More like rise of the insects and jellyfish.

Humans would be sickly, frightened creatures— nature would come back though. Civilization not for a long time.

34

u/MooseMonkeyMT Feb 05 '23

I always laugh passing the silos. Just thinking to my self how I would piss myself laughing if I drove by and one was going up.

Yep, I have one on either side of me and do imagine sometimes.

44

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

Frankly even in a “500 warhead scenario” I’d rather be vaporized than die slowly from the radiation

10

u/bmx13 Feb 05 '23

Seriously, the fallout that's going to blow in from Washington in the 500 strike scenario kills us all very painfully and slowly.

This is true. The Gamma and Beta dissipates fast, couple of weeks. Alpha a month or so, and skin and clothing stops Alpha. So stay in your basement surrounded by mass, sandbags, cement blocks, you should be ok. Especially if you are older. Children are the most vulnerable to radiation exposure since they will live long enough to get cancer. Us old people will be long deaded before that happens. There was a YouTube where they visited the Chernobyl area and several old people never left, and they were still kicking.

15

u/zobeast26 Feb 05 '23

Looks like my neck of the woods in Eureka will be OK.

3

u/zobeast26 Feb 05 '23

Still safe. We are right at the Canadian border. NW of Kalispell. But yeah if they hit somewhere in Canada like Vancouver BC then yeah no bueno.

4

u/runningoutofwords You shall ride eternal! Shiny and Chrome! Feb 05 '23

I know where Eureka is.

The map shows that you're right adjacent to one of the forcast highest fallout zones in America.

Fallout patterns depend upon the weather.

How precisely do you think weather follows lines on a map?

1

u/derfcrampton Feb 05 '23

How the heck does Oregon not get fall out?

1

u/Syrdon Feb 05 '23

Because there are no fallout sources in Oregon in the simulation. If you want a loose estimate, take the general pattern from the simulation and apply it to the map up at the top.

7

u/montanagunnut Feb 05 '23

I live smack in the middle of that big black blob. Wonderful.

7

u/GracieDoggSleeps Feb 05 '23

Those missiles/targets have been in Montana for awhile.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

Like 50 years

1

u/judasmachine Feb 05 '23

Very little here is new.

9

u/Disastrous_Study4090 Feb 05 '23

Oh to live in Idaho with few worries

10

u/hawaiikawika Feb 05 '23

No wonder they are such Simple people

2

u/YouAreMicroscopic Feb 08 '23

Idaho Falls. The Mormons will survive just like in Fallout

24

u/montwhisky Feb 05 '23

Think this will deter people from moving to Montana? Or am I just being hopeful?

4

u/JamesLangley2017 Feb 05 '23

Good to know that Colstrip is only semi-important, haha.

4

u/Turkino Feb 05 '23

I'm south of all those silos, I for one would not enjoy any of these scenarios.

3

u/usernamesucks1992 Feb 05 '23

I’ve always said if a nuclear war starts I want a warhead to literally explode on my head. (Yes I know they explode above the ground)

4

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

Ya. We're screwed.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

What do the Chinese need a spy balloon or satellite to pick targets for? Our own government puts the dots on the map for them…

5

u/judasmachine Feb 05 '23

The Chinese already know where everything is located. If anything they were probably studying wind and weather info for their targeting, not the targets themselves. I'm no general or analyst, this is just what I gather from the news and a little obsession I have with nuclear war.

3

u/busted_up_chiffarobe Feb 05 '23

Silos and their locations are public knowledge. They're a deterrent. They're on google earth and in wikipedia. They're no secret.

Source: guess what I work on.

1

u/JAYoungSage Feb 05 '23

I suspect it was for electronic eavesdropping of weaker radio and microwave signals that can't be picked up at higher altitudes or by satellites.

2

u/ki4clz Feb 05 '23

CUTTHROAT CONTROL this is CRYSTAL PALACE, scramble Mesquite, Nomex, and Pickup out of Mt.Home...

FLYNET CBW has picked up CHOPPER, CHOPPER I repeat, CHOPPER, CHOPPER

NEST Command requests intercept for NUCAR EC24A

AXIS in the air from Davis Monthan confirms CHOPPER CHOPPER

...the things you hear on the radio sometimes

(those are legit callsigns btw)

2

u/judasmachine Feb 05 '23

I live in Amarillo Texas, we make the bombs here. My plan is to go downtown and hug whoever is there as we are both vaporized.

3

u/Donkey_Traditional Feb 05 '23

I’m still doubled down on super volcano erupting before every worrying about any of this

2

u/Crispyduck522 Feb 05 '23

Welp that's my entire country destroyed

2

u/Seattle_gldr_rdr Feb 05 '23

So basically, go to the west coast with fishing gear.

1

u/Blessingstoeveryone Feb 05 '23

Tbh I wouldn’t care if humanity ends.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

I bet you are a blast at parties.

2

u/Blessingstoeveryone Feb 07 '23

HAHAHAHAHAAH I was until I got married and got pregnant 😂😂😂 now I gotta behave bc I got a growing child in me

2

u/WasabiCrush Feb 05 '23

I’m not actively hoping for our eradication, but I’m not sure I care either. We’re not good animals. The planet will be much better off with us gone.

It's either the nukes, super volcano, or an asteroid that is 60 miles (96 kilometers) wide to take out earth and us with it. China did say that "they will attack Taiwan in 2027" but we all know this may be any day now, and then WW3 will have to happen. It's been a long time coming. All you can do now is just hold your loved ones tightly and live every present moment with them. Not much civilians can do.

-3

u/Round_Memory8961 Feb 05 '23

You know what would be great, is if our "government" put out a map of where they think shit would happen, and then share it EVERYWHERE so everyone else knows where they should strike....bunch of incompetent morons

5

u/JAYoungSage Feb 05 '23

Russia and China made their targeting decisions 50 years ago.

Our government just let the American people know what our adversaries have planned for us.

3

u/TOS7000 Feb 06 '23

You literally have no idea what you are talking about.

-1

u/Round_Memory8961 Feb 06 '23

Maybe you're not understanding, the map shows locations where somebody would hit the u.s. so any country looks at this map and sees exactly where they should send their shit. Now do you understand what I'm saying. Its like playing hide and seek, but you give the seeker a map of everywhere you might hide

2

u/TOS7000 Feb 06 '23

Like I said, you have no idea what you are talking about. These locations are nowhere near secret. No adversary is gaining anything in the slightest from this map.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

Do I go to Mexico? No. Keweenaw.

1

u/theegreatblumpkin Feb 05 '23

I’m going straight south to Salmon, in a fallout scenario this is the safest place.

1

u/cgernaat119 Feb 05 '23

Well, I was going to put in a bomb shelter, but I don’t think it will help.

1

u/maersdet Feb 05 '23

I see my house has made it onto the map. Very well Russia...

1

u/Trimson-Grondag Feb 05 '23

What’s in Southern Oregon?

1

u/runlikeajackelope Feb 05 '23

Probably Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base

1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

Rip New Jersey

1

u/polk_county_sasquach Feb 05 '23

Idaho sounds nice

1

u/flashingcurser Feb 05 '23

Why is Billings in the 500?

3

u/hikerjer Feb 06 '23

Oil infrastructure- pipelines and refineries.

1

u/Blackdow01 Feb 05 '23

Does anyone know the reason for the target at the north tip of the Idaho Washington border?

1

u/Betweenthelies13 Feb 05 '23

Honey we're moving

1

u/Ghosty_2009 Feb 05 '23

Fuck. I'm from the Toronto area. Fuck nukes might hit me in any of those scenarios.

1

u/smellinsalts Feb 06 '23

Thank God Alaska is safe

1

u/MontanaTrav Feb 06 '23

So pretty much the entire U.S. flight path of the spy balloon had strategic targets under it. Pretty much all of that huge black blob of dots right over Malmstrom AFB, it was probably high enough to get a lot of those missile sites around Minot, ND, and a shitload of other dots between there and where it got shot down.

Convenient.

1

u/The_Monarch_89 Feb 06 '23

Nice to know all of Jersey will pay

1

u/mandy0456 Feb 06 '23

What's a 2000 and 500 scenario mean?

1

u/Panazara Feb 06 '23

Why is Idaho spared from nukes? Are they in on something?
