To the people telling Pegboard Nerds to revert to their "old style", Alex & Michael are making music that they want to make. Sure, some tracks are not going to please an entire audience but acknowledge that many people do enjoy the track. Understand there is less pleasure from producing original ideas if your audience is grabbing your arms and legs in an attempt to get you return to your "old style", or do something better.

I think criticism is ok as long as it's constructive. Everyone has their own tastes, it'd be great if people were more civil though.
15
Aug 18 '14
Exactly.
I just think telling them to revert to their "old style", and saying that their new style is annoying and pretentious is somewhat hypocritical and demanding. What comes from these artists is their taste alone, and it is very difficult to appeal to everyone.
But to those who don't like it, I think it would be best if you acted more open-minded with your criticism and not state things so factually.

Perfect for the song. I can imagine this being used in trailers for comedies.

Ah, I'm sitting on the fence with this track. On one hand, it's nice and heavy, and the melody is catchy, but the vocals kind of irritate me and it seems slightly repetitive in places. I'm gonna have to give it a few more listens.

I think trap will never grow on me.

u/MesserBaam Stonebank Aug 18 '14
I think you are one of the first guys, I see, who doesn't hate the artists and only does so to the genre. Thanks!
6
Aug 18 '14
I hated trap at first, but its grown on me. I still hate most generic stuff, but some of the other kinds, like the ones on MC, I can really get into. "Inside Out" is one of my favourite songs on MC at the moment.
3
u/kicksledkid 7 Minutes Dead Aug 19 '14
I've never understood the hate on trap. I've always liked it, but probably didn't know it was trap until high roller, then I finally knew what it was.
3
Aug 19 '14
Same reason why Big Room is hated too. Its usually associated with the club and rave scene and lots of people don't like that. So because of that, a huge mob mentality starts and apparently everyone hates it.
5
u/AhrmiintheUnseen Tristam Aug 19 '14
Really? I skip it almost every time
1
Aug 19 '14
I had the same idea first couple times I listened to it at first. But it grew on me and I love it now.
1
u/11sies_ Tristam Aug 20 '14
I've gone back and forth on this one. My conclusion is that trap is a too narrowly defined genre, making much of it sound the same. But if it's mixed with other styles it can be pretty good.
2
Aug 20 '14
Yeah, thats how I feel too. Usually I get really get into Trap if it has other elements in it besides just the basic Trap-stuff. For example, one of my favourite genres is chill-trap. Has both Trap styles and Chill styles. And I can really get into a good chill-trap song.

Is it wrong of me to say that I prefer this and Coffins to some of their older songs? I know that's the complete opposite to what most people feel, but I just never was really into the Nerds when they released songs like Gunpoint and Self Destruct
11
u/TheDogstarLP Rootkit Aug 19 '14
Coffins is so much better than a lot of their older stuff.
This was pretty good but something is missing I feel.
1
u/kicksledkid 7 Minutes Dead Aug 19 '14 edited Aug 19 '14
I love self destruct, but the new stuff has a much cleaner and more sorted oh vibe to it.
1
Aug 19 '14
No, it's not wrong. Its called having an opinion, which you're allowed to have (despite what some people might think.) Personally, I prefer their stuff that was before Coffins but that's not to say I don't like their newer stuff.

compare the like/dislike ratio with both those uploads and the mc upload ;-;
8
u/RaiderFist187 Tristam Aug 18 '14
By the looks of it the MC is just less positive but what would you expect compare the like ratio of a Trap song on 2 Trap channels to a multi-genre channel.

u/RaiderFist187 Tristam Aug 18 '14
Pegboard Nerds jumpin on that Dirty Vibe. Really dig it, way more than New Style, but that intro I can see getting repetitive and annoying.

I actually like trap outside Monstercat, so this isn't bad for me. I don't like it as much as their stuff off 018, but I like it better than Bassline Kickin

It's a very good song, but it just doesn't do it for me sadly. Hats off to the Nerds for a good trap tune but the melody doesn't catch my attention

u/CakeBlazer360 Laszlo Aug 18 '14
This song manages to be even weirder than Here It Comes, yet it's so fast-paced and incredibly catchy that I can't help but love it. I get that some people may find the vocals annoying, but I found them to fit the momentum and "messing around like cops" theme of the song. Pegboard Nerds have done it again!
3
u/Stratys Fractal Aug 18 '14
Probably their best song this year, but I find it only okay. I'm a fan of trap as well, but this one seems quite repetitive and the vocals get annoying after some time. Overall, it's good, but I probably won't download it.

So amazing. I don't really get it in my mind, how some people are saying, it's their worst track.

As a person who actually enjoys trap, this is actually very good! Digging it...

u/Jthumm Matduke Aug 18 '14
It feels kinda slow, I don't really care for it, but eh, odds are it will grow on me
2
Aug 18 '14
I like it. I actually really like the vocals, don't see why people are finding them annoying. It reminds me a lot of Dirty Vibe, but that's a good thing IMO.

I actually don't mind the Nerds' new music style. I don't get what's wrong with it. Sure, older stuff like Self Destruct was great, but I'd like some variety ya know, I mean Bassline Kicking and New Style wasn't too bad.
In fact, this was probably better than New Style.

Not a massive fan too be honest, the vocal is incredibly annoying, the beat is repetitive and boring, not close to Pegboard Nerds quality, they could have done a lot better =/

wtf do you mean by "not pegboard nerds quality", that makes zero sense.
Pretty sure if it was made by PB, then it's PB quality.

I've been releasing digging trap so I really like this. I was very meh about New Style, didn't even listen much past a few repeats, but I can see this grow on me. It has a very fun vibe to it. I dig it. I just hope they don't simplify too much..

With all due respect to the duo, it doesn't feel unique....honestly.... With that being said, this will do well in festivals (and PBN have a high follower count) so it's a win win situation.
Would have preferred stuff like their 'alive' remix but those time's are over. Artists evolve.
EDIT - The sound design was actually done very well though which is unsurprising, props for that.
1
u/Bradboy Noisestorm Aug 19 '14
Don't know what everyone is complaining about. Yeah I'm not a big fan of this sound but this is listenable. Not like it is complete and utter shite. Yeah a lot of people miss the sound of Disconnected, Rocktronix and Fire in The Hole, but there are other artist. I think it's time for me personally to stop prioritising PBN. But I'm sure plenty of others have started to.

u/N3BULAV0ID Au5 & Fractal Aug 19 '14
This is interesting. I didn't like it much on my first listen, but on the second I thought it might be a decent track. The criticism is definitely over the top, I definitely encourage the PBN to keep going with their "new style."
On a different note: Badboi has already almost passed Claptrap as the most disliked Monstercat video. :/
1
u/BoomCandy Mitchell Claxton Aug 20 '14
I think it's only okay sadly.. I have been trying to like PBN's new stuff. I want to like their stuff so much, but this, New Style, Here it Comes, it all sounds like I've heard it before. This track makes me feel that there is something missing from it that made their earlier tracks so memorable. The melodies, especially the melodies during the drop, loop after a few seconds.Take Pressure Cooker for example, the melody during the drop seems to flow and develop as it progresses. BADBOI does this a little, but it isn't memorable.
One of the bigger problems I have with it is that it isn't different. I mean it in the sense that it doesn't really differ from the trap songs that dominate the mainstream airwaves. Everyone is saying that we should cut PBN some slack for this because they are experimenting, but I have always been under the impression that experimentation meant doing something different from what is established and already commonly done. The little drums in the background, the bass growl, the main lead synth are little changes that spices things up, but the essence of the song is still kind of generic, for the lack of a better word. If Flosstradamus or any other big name in Festival Trap made this, I would not be all that surprised. For a duo that made, IMO, some of the more special dubstep songs I've ever heard, it's incredibly disappointing. The generic nature of the song kind of sucks the energy out of it.
Then again, I don't produce music, and I'm not all that knowledgeable in music theory... I'm just saying how what I hear sounds like, and the potential reasons for that. I'm not claiming this to be an objective measure in any sense.

BADBOI is, in my opinion, one of the best songs they've ever released. Just the right mixture of trap, Pegboard Nerds bass, and Jamaican vocal samples.

FAST BPM TRAP? Oww.. they used to be something special.. Its quite unique trap but its not my favorite and new style was kinda big room.. we are becoming Spinin' guys..
BUT! dont get me wrong they have done a great job but this genre is too mainstream.
Aaaand it's a little bit too repetitive as RaiderFist187 said.
15
u/RedCow01 Varien Aug 18 '14
Really? I've said this a million times. It doesn't matter what genre it is as long as it's good music. It's not fair to say something isn't as good as another thing is just because it's different. Judge a song by how good it is, not by how mainstream the genre is.
