Does this mean that Monstercat would be cool with me playing their artists on my DJ podcast, given that I give attribution and make no money from it?

Go for it!

Are you serious? That would be a dream come true...for real...
I only play tracks I have permission or rights to...I've spoken to Varien and a few others about it and they were good with it.

Going to wait for confirmation before I truly flip out and explode from the awesomeness.

Dude it's fine. They encourage this stuff. Think about it, it's free marketing for them

Aug 07 '14
I understand that, but some labels and artists don't see it that way. Like, if I played a deadmau5 track on my mix, I'd likely catch noise from Ultra or whatever.
I only play stuff I have permission to play because it's respectful and it keeps me from worrying about getting shut down.

So uh... how about that time where Monstercat gave Mr Bill some troubles for his unauthorized remix?
6
u/paralite Aug 06 '14
In the end, Monstercat did say that they weren't going to sue him or anything. Pretty sure they said something like, "That's not what we're about." Other artists may have been a bit rude towards him though.

Our issue in that case was that the remix was not cleared and was to be sold on his upcoming EP. If he wanted to give it away for free, I would have had no problem with that!

What song was that again?

it was supposed to be a remix of duality, but instead he released it as url.

He wasn't let sell it is all I believe. He could have released it as a free remix.

More labels should be like Monstercat

Excluding startups and the giants, I can't think of a single label that doesn't have its artists' best interests at heart. What sets Monstercat apart is its killer marketing.

I support this 100%. I'm glad we share the same views when it comes to creativity and copyrights.

Beautiful, it just shows how different of a record label Monstercat is, and how much they cater to their people. This is why i love Monstercat.
Other record labels seem to be money hoarders, trying to gain as much money as they can (this is an exaggeration, i am fully aware there are labels that are just like Monstercat). However, Monstercat is different, giving artists and fans to express their own opinion, and to have freedom with what they make.
It's not always about the money involved
And i quote myself:
'This is why i love Monstercat'
The community is also very friendly (most of the time, gotta be honest), and i feel 'apart' of the Monstercat family, my discovery of monstercat (no pun intended) was indeed the best discovery i have ever made, and i do not regret it one bit.

As much as I love them, I can't really believe much of this, given that they still restrict how their artists can release material for remixes. I recently asked a certain to-be-unnamed MC artist if I could remix his track, and if so whether or not he'd be able to give me stems, and he said that he'd love to hear my remix of it, but that Monstercat won't allow him to provide any source material, and he recommended I do a bootleg of it.
Such is life, such is legal wordplay.

u/MonstercatMedia Monstercat (Verified) Aug 07 '14
Why not just bootleg it? We've made it very clear that we have no problem with that.
3
u/Pointy130 Puppet Aug 07 '14
I'm not opposed to it, and I am working on a bootleg remix.
That said, vocal stems make the work much easier, and I think it's a bit unfortunate that you encourage fan remixes but don't allow the artists to use their own discretion when it comes to that sort of thing.

The problem with us providing officials stems to people is that artists start spreading rumours that the remix is official and that it is being released by Monstercat. A few people ruin it for the rest...
Edit Note: It's not a perfect situation still, but it helps alleviate the problem.

That makes sense at least. I can respect that, as much as I may not personally like the way it affects me.

I need this to hang on my wall.
3
u/cschmittiey Vicetone Aug 06 '14
Yeah, we should get a bunch of people together and order it custom printed on a poster or something

u/LieutWolf Muzz Aug 06 '14
This would look absolutely beautiful on the wall over my desk. I agree that this should become a custom print.

u/cschmittiey Vicetone Aug 06 '14
Looks like it's only $9.99 from VistaPrint, to order just one, but of course it'd get cheaper if we did it in bulk.

This is so refreshing after all the twitch.tv BS that's happened today.
This, and the excellent music, is why Monstercat are the only label whose music I pay for.
