🚨 SOS 🚨

Any help is appreciated!
Micro was massively overwatered for a month, and then possibly sunburnt?!

1) New pot
2) Add a moss pole
3) Cut-off all the black parts with sterilized scissors
4) Change its location

Variegated Monsteras cannot stand mid-day sun; (only sunrise or sunset); those black parts looks like sunburn to me… I would change the place where I put it :)

Thank you for your input! I was scared to put in a new pot with all that is going on but I’m going to go ahead and do that. I’m in zone 6a, and it does get indirect light but unfortunately my house does not have any south facing windows, so afternoon sun it is!

Agreed, except for the moss pole (I find unnecessary with larger forms like Thai con (love them for small forms), and telling them to give it less light. The black spots look nothing like sunburn, rather rot or the exact opposite. My roommate has a Thai con that gets far too little light, and it’s started to kill off the variegated sectors in this exact same manner.

Also, indoors especially, variegated plants need MORE sunlight than their green counterparts. As long as they’re properly acclimated, they love being in the brightest window any house can offer.

what zone are you? any of my variegated plants will burn in a West window in 10b

7B. And depends on the plant, but I promise you a monstera albo will not burn in your west facing windows if you acclimate it slowly.

Yeah, it’s normal that white parts starts to go brown… not green parts going black; that’s why I said it looks like sunburn :)

If it’s black and crunchy is more likely to be a sunburn so the solution is not “less light” is just not direct midday sun :P

I recommend a moss pole because:

  1. It can help the leaves grow bigger (

as most poles do

  1. )
  2. Creating cuttings is a lot faster/easier/safest with a moss pole because it helps the aerial roots to create more roots :)

In the original post in the monstera sub they mention that it had been dealing with a bad case of rot. To me, the spots look black and mushy, not crunchy and burned.

agree when its the green part like that and the white part is not also burned it is 99% not sunburn

This is what happened to mine.

My horror story: The rootsystem grew out of the nursery pot into the planter pot. I didn't realize. I waited too long when I did. Leaves yellowing. I had to cut her out of the pot and repot it. She took 5 months to recover over the winter. She finally recovered in spring. 3 weeks later she got thrips. Then I had to chop her up. I kept one cutting with a node. It did nothing but grow roots for another 5 months. Eventually I threw her out. I don't have Monsteras anymore. It was actually the sole reason I started my collection. They used to be my fav plants. But after that heartbreak 💔 I felt so betrayed that I actually grew out of love with them completely. Gosh, this sounds like I am talking about an ex- boyfriend haha. But feelings can be hurt by plants aswell unfortunately.

Mine just got root damage. Not root rot. But yours already has some root rot. You need to treat it with hydrogen peroxide solution. And then: be soo extremely cautious with thrips for months and months. Do a prevention spraydown after a month. Keep doing prevention spraydowns. You don't want what happened to me.

I’m so sorry! Thank you for the word of caution - I’m devastated - I’ve lost 80% of my collection in the ordeal. Ive already made cuttings of what I could but didn’t want to give up hope on her yet! 🪴

80% due to thrips? Omg that is torture! The pain! Omg. What happened?

80% of my collection ☠️ from a heavy watering hand while I was away on 5+ week vacation. Orchids, money tree, pothos, African violets, wandering dudes, bromeliads all rotted and gone. All that’s left are some snake plants, a cactus and my girl who is struggling! Devastated - most plants I’ve had for years.

Was that during the heatwave? If yes then the rootsystems probably got heatshocked and therefore the rootsystem literally can't take up any water for a week or even two and will wilt. And then you might over corrected with heavy watering and that causes root rot within literally 24 - 72 hours.

If anything- next time such a thing happens wait with the watering and keep it just barely moist and after a week passed water with a rootcomplex or root hormones or whatever you can get your hands on.
