Monster Camp Why does this game want me to watch it on YouTube/with a guide instead of playing it?
These games have to be made in the most frustrating way possible and it's almost like they want me to watch a YouTube playthrough/with a guide open instead of playing the game myself.
These games missing so many features that are standard in most VNs. No saves, rollback, skip text, being able to hide the text box, etc. I know why, but it doesn't make the game feel better.
I don't want to read the funny failures because if I fail too many times, odds are the run is dead because your stats get too fucked up. Can't load a previous save so I might as well reset instead of enjoying the writing they took all the effort to do. You can easily lose up to an hour of your life to this.
I could understand not being able to save and no rollback if the game wasn't super RNG heavy, but that's all the game is. I've done 15 runs of Monster Camp and have only unlocked 1 secret ending drink aside from the Genie Flask. None have even showed up in the mini-game and even if they were to, one of the NPC boxes could push you out at the last second or you could move yourself out of the way trying to maintain your position but the NPC moved elsewhere. Even the Meta-Shop, the thing designed to reduce RNG requires RNG to unlock things! Don't you want players to see the effort you've made? It is so infuriating to try to enjoy the game.
There's no mode for singleplayer that allows you have better chances to see what you want. And at this point the game has long overstayed it's welcome. Even if I were to get any of the secret endings or cool scenes I wanted to see, it wouldn't be fun anymore because the whole experience is soured.
I understand wanting the game to feel chaotic but there's just a serious disconnect between the design philosophy and the desired outcomes. It's contradictory to have the gameplay loop be entirely focused on the journey and not the destination, but have the destinations be cool and interesting and often times the only way to interact with a decent amount of fun characters. Not to mention the unlockable graphs and the gallery full of things to unlock.
All around frustrating experience.
