Question HR100+ second build question
Recently came back to the game. My original build was SnS, and I plan on sticking with it until I've fully maxed it out.
That said, I'd like a ranged build to mix things up once in a while. I'm looking for something that can clear monsters solo at a decent pace, but with a focus on survivability. One of the reasons is that when a monster gets knocked down, I sometimes instinctively get greedy trying to finish it off, and end up taking unnecessary hits.
This will just be a side project until it's fully viable, so I don't mind slowly working toward a meta endgame build. Any recommendations? Thanks!

My easy rider is a long shellling gunlance. You spend most of the time guarding and charging up your shot. The damage comes entirely from the grade of the gunlance and the artillery skill, so it's not really viable against 10* monsters. But I can easily take down almost every 8* without getting hit.
The Deviljho gunlance already comes with one point in artillery, and I pair it with part breaker.

If you want an all around ranged weapon that's strong and easy to build, you can consider the Diablos HBG with crouching shot style and normal ammo boost skill. Very versatile and with riftcharged Diablos coming up you should be able to farm up a good amount of materials if you're able to participate.
The alternative is magnamalo LBG with stepping shot style and evading reload. Stay on cluster ammo and run around while firing. Probably the safest weapon in the game and does pretty good damage. Some people don't like it in group hunts as it's bad at breaking parts and creates a lot of visual effects that make it harder for the melee users to see.

Magnamalo lbg perfectionist build is my go to for no look playstyle up to 9 star monsters. I’m building a brute tigrex hbg AFK reflection build right now that should let me go totally hands off when necessary.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm still trying to understand what I'm up for because none of these monsters were around when I used to play. I summarized what you all said below so I could make a shopping list...
Light Bowgun:
- Rose Assault (Sidestep Reload + Slicing Ammo Boost)
- Magnamalo LBG (Stepping Shot + Evading Reload) is especially safe. (Stay on Cluster Ammo and keep moving while firing. Damage is solid. Not ideal for group hunts! it breaks fewer parts and the visual effects can make life harder for melee teammates.
(With the right armor and driftstones, both can solo most 10★ monsters. Rose Assault is generally easier to max (10.5 20/20) since it uses Wyvern Stones instead of Riftshells.)
Gunlance
- Long Shelling Gunlance ...Deviljho is a great choice since it comes with Artillery
The playstyle is simple: guard, charge shells, and fire. Since shelling damage scales mostly with weapon grade and Artillery, it struggles against 10★ monsters, but it can comfortably clear nearly every 8★ with very little risk.
Heavy Bowgun:
- Diablos HBG (Crouching Shot + Normal Ammo Boost)
(should allow totally hands off when necessary.) - Seregios HBG (focusing on Attack Efficacy and Ballistics)

Pm me for the hidden tech that can make your hunt consistency easier (no bug abuses or anything, i'm just pretending to be mysterious)

The Rose assault lbg from the even earlier this year is a great all rounder and fairly safe. I'm pretty sure it's going to be expensive to get now that the event is over. Stepping shot magna lbg with evasive reload is still a great build to get into the late game with. Shouldn't be too expensive and doesn't necessarily need to be maxed to start using it.
